Arthur parked the car at the side of the road and turned to look at the Black Widow.
She was still unconscious.
Arthur grinned. "Someone like you shouldn't be out this long. If you're planning to ambush me when I'm not paying attention, it's unnecessary. It's already 12:31. Everything is over."
Black Widow's eyes suddenly snapped open, and in the next second, a set of black, tight clothes flew toward her.
She caught the clothes and looked at them - it was her own outfit. "You're right. I shouldn't have been unconscious for so long."
"Anything's possible," Arthur chuckled. "Get dressed; you have a teammate to tend to."
Black Widow looked down, her expression a little strange as she silently dressed. "What happened?"
"Nothing much." Arthur tossed her a brooch and smiled. "I just disguised myself as you and took care of some things that needed to be done."
She caught the brooch and stared at Arthur in confusion.
Her phone rang, but she didn't answer it.
"Go ahead and answer it. It's probably Fury," Arthur said with a smile. "Hopefully he's not too upset."
Black Widow answered the call, said a few words and hung up. "Fury wants you to come over."
"Not interested. Maybe tomorrow."
Arthur stretched and said, "I told the others I'd be back today - well, technically yesterday. But because of all of you, I wasted a whole afternoon and evening. If I don't leave now, I may not have dinner tomorrow."
He opened the car door and stepped out. With a thought, another person appeared in the car. "Steve is your responsibility."
Steve was still unconscious and lay slumped in the back seat.
Black Widow followed him out of the car and remained silent for a long moment. "You tricked us all, didn't you?"
"It was a pure coincidence." Arthur chuckled. "But yes, that was my goal."
"You won't succeed every time."
"That's something you'll have to bet on. Or rather, it's up to Fury if he's willing to take that risk." Arthur smiled again. "Pass along a message for me: the girl's life is now tied to your 'big boss.' If you do anything to her behind the scenes, be prepared to find a new boss. I know there's no shortage of talent in America. There's no shortage of powerful people. But even if you send him into space, I can make sure he dies quietly. Weigh the consequences for yourself."
Black Widow could only watch as Arthur disappeared into the night.
After a moment of silence, she got back into the car and started the engine. Just then, Steve groggily woke up in the back seat. "Instructor...?"
"I'm not," Black Widow said, taking a deep breath. "What exactly happened?"
"I don't know." Steve rubbed his head. "Honestly, I was just about to ask you."
"I went to the bathroom and got knocked out," Black Widow said with a dark expression. "He was hiding in the ladies' room."
Steve blinked, then smiled wryly. "So he disguised himself as you and knocked me out in the car? I guess you don't know what happened after that..."
"But I can imagine," Black Widow said, exhaling deeply. "No one would have expected him to impersonate me, so no one was on guard. He had plenty of time to do what he wanted. We underestimated him."
"Never underestimate the Instructor," Steve said as he looked out into the night. His expression wasn't embarrassed, just calm. "Because those who underestimate him are already dead."
...
...
In truth, Arthur did more than the Black Widow imagined.
For starters, he wasn't hiding in the women's bathroom. He was in the men's room.
The original target wasn't Black Widow, but any agent who might show up. If no one came for a while, he planned to grab a random agent and continue his mission.
However, Black Widow unexpectedly went to the restroom, which caught him by surprise. Seizing the opportunity, he decided to adjust his plan.
Their body types were very different, and no one could have imagined that he could disguise himself as a woman.
Most of the wireless earpieces used by agents were identical, but Arthur's had an extra function. It could record a person's voice and, after processing the audio, change its own voice to mimic theirs.
It was one of Star-Lord's proudest creations. During three months of adventures in space, Arthur had used it to impersonate various people.
After knocking out Black Widow, Arthur even left a teleportation array on the bathroom floor, just in case.
Then, with Steve in tow, he was unsure where to take him next. Ultimately, he exposed his true voice, and before Steve could react in shock, Arthur knocked him out and stuffed him into the Disassembler space.
It turned out that putting people in the Disassembler Space while they were unconscious had two advantages.
First, no matter who it was, as long as they were unconscious, they could be put in there.
Second, when they woke up, they wouldn't feel dizzy or disoriented.
After solving the problem with Steve, Arthur rejoined Fury and the others and pretended to make plans together, setting up codes and preparing to defend against "Arthur".
During this time, Arthur, still disguised as Black Widow, took advantage of moments when no one was paying attention to place teleportation arrays in various locations - again, just in case.
To be honest, the hardest part of the whole process was imitating Black Widow. He wasn't familiar with everything around her, but he had to act natural and comfortable.
If it weren't for the countless times he'd seen Black Widow in the movies, he wouldn't have been able to get her mannerisms and tone right.
...
...
It was already 1:30 in the morning.
Arthur stood on a street in Queens and pulled his phone out of the Disassembler Space. When he had texted Fury earlier, he had seen the messages from Lily- over thirty of them.
They were all asking when he was coming back, wondering why he hadn't returned yet.
"She should be asleep by now, right?"
Arthur looked down at his phone, then up at the lights on the second floor, guessing what might be going on.
A key appeared in his hand as he unlocked the door and stepped quietly inside.
The living room on the first floor was empty.
The sofa, the coffee table, the television, and even the basement were just as he had left them, untouched.
But in the next moment, Arthur's expression fell and he sighed softly. There was someone upstairs, in the living room on the second floor... but their breathing was calm, as if they were peacefully asleep.
Releasing the Eye of Horus to scan the room, Arthur immediately appeared in the upstairs living room.
The coffee table in front of him was covered with all kinds of food, now cold and untouched.
Lily was still wearing her apron, her face dusted with white flour, holding her phone in one hand. She was lying diagonally on the sofa, sound asleep.
Arthur suddenly felt a pang of guilt.
He could picture the scene - this girl, clutching her phone, waiting for him to return, but he never showed up.
"She must be really mad."
Arthur crouched beside her, careful with his steps and his breathing, just watching her in silence. Then, for some reason, he smiled and whispered, "I'm back."
He decided to sit on the floor, leaning against the sofa. Without doing anything else, he felt a wave of relaxation wash over him, and soon he too fell asleep, completely at ease...
