Chapter 69 - The Dragon's Fury

The air around Eldoria crackled with energy as the battle raged on. The once-proud city, with its shining towers and mighty walls, was now a battlefield littered with rubble and flame. The sounds of clashing steel, roaring wyrms, and battle cries filled the night. Fires blazed across the city, casting eerie shadows across the streets as defenders fought desperately to hold back Draygor's forces.

Aric wiped the sweat from his brow, his chest heaving as he surveyed the battlefield. The battle had been fierce, but the tide had turned against them. Draygor's dark magic had shattered the inner defenses, and now the enemy surged through the streets of Eldoria, pushing ever closer to the heart of the city.

"We can't hold much longer," Kael said, his voice strained as he loosed another arrow at a charging soldier. "They're overwhelming us."

Aric nodded grimly. He knew Kael was right. The forces of Eldoria had fought bravely, but Draygor's army was too powerful, bolstered by the corrupted wyrms and the dark magic that flowed through their ranks. If they didn't find a way to turn the tide, the city would fall, and with it, all hope for Drakenor.

"Elara," Aric called out, turning to the mage who stood beside him, her staff glowing with arcane light. "Is there anything more we can do?"

Elara's face was pale, and her eyes were filled with exhaustion. She had been casting spells relentlessly throughout the battle, but even her considerable powers had limits. "I'm trying," she replied, her voice weak. "But Draygor's magic is stronger than anything I've ever faced. It's like the darkness itself is fighting against us."

Aric clenched his fists, feeling the weight of the situation pressing down on him. Draygor's forces were closing in, and they were running out of options. But there was still one chance, one desperate gamble that could change everything.

"We need to release the dragons," Aric said, his voice firm.

Kael and Elara both stared at him, shock and confusion written on their faces.

"What?" Kael asked, lowering his bow. "Are you mad? The dragons are uncontrollable! We could destroy the entire city!"

"It's a risk we have to take," Aric replied, his gaze unwavering. "Draygor's wyrms are too powerful. If we don't unleash the dragons, we won't stand a chance."

Elara hesitated, her hand tightening around her staff. "Aric, the ancient dragons are wild, primal beings. Even the Dragon King struggled to control them. If we release them, there's no guarantee they'll fight for us."

Aric knew she was right, but he also knew they had no other choice. The ancient dragons, the ones that had once roamed the skies of Drakenor in ages past, were the only creatures powerful enough to stand against Draygor's corrupted wyrms. If they could be unleashed, they might turn the tide of the battle.

"I'll go to the Dragon's Eye," Aric said, determination in his voice. "I'll awaken the dragons and bring them here."

Kael grabbed Aric's arm, his eyes filled with concern. "Are you sure about this? The Dragon's Eye is deep in the mountains, and the path is dangerous. If you fail—"

"I won't fail," Aric said, cutting him off. "I have to do this. For Eldoria. For Drakenor."

Elara stepped forward, her expression softening. "You won't go alone. We'll come with you."

Aric shook his head. "No. I need you both here to hold the line. If we lose Eldoria before I return, everything will be for nothing. I'll go alone."

Kael and Elara exchanged a look, but neither argued. They knew the stakes were too high to waste time debating.

"Be careful," Kael said, gripping Aric's shoulder. "And hurry."

Aric nodded and turned away, his heart heavy with the weight of the task before him. He made his way through the chaos of the battlefield, dodging fallen debris and the occasional enemy soldier. His destination was the ancient portal located deep within Eldoria, a hidden gateway that would take him to the Dragon's Eye.

The portal was guarded by a group of elite soldiers, their armor battered and bloodied from the ongoing battle. They saluted Aric as he approached, opening the way for him.

"Good luck, my lord," one of the soldiers said as Aric stepped through the shimmering portal.

The Dragon's Eye was a desolate place, high in the jagged peaks of the Spine of Drakenor. As Aric emerged from the portal, he was greeted by the bitter cold of the mountain winds and the sight of ancient stone carvings that lined the path ahead. The Dragon's Eye was an ancient temple, long abandoned by the Dragon King and his people, but it was said that the essence of the dragons still lingered there, waiting for the day they would be called upon once more.

Aric's breath came in short, labored gasps as he climbed the steep steps that led to the temple's entrance. The wind howled around him, and the ground beneath his feet was slick with ice. But he pressed on, driven by the knowledge that Eldoria's survival—and the fate of Drakenor—depended on him.

At last, he reached the entrance of the temple, a massive stone archway carved with intricate symbols and runes. The air inside was thick with the smell of sulfur and ancient magic, and Aric could feel the power of the dragons pulsing all around him.

He stepped inside, his footsteps echoing off the stone walls as he made his way deeper into the temple. The chamber he sought lay at the heart of the Dragon's Eye, a vast, circular room with a towering altar at its center. And there, lying dormant on the floor of the chamber, were the dragon eggs—each one as large as a boulder, their scales shimmering in the dim light.

Aric approached the altar, his heart pounding in his chest. He knew what he had to do, but the task filled him with dread. Awakening the dragons was no small feat, and once they were released, there was no controlling them.

He reached out, his hand trembling as he touched the first egg. Instantly, a surge of power coursed through him, and the egg began to tremble, cracks forming along its surface. One by one, the other eggs began to shake as well, the dragons within them stirring to life.

The ground beneath Aric's feet shook as the first dragon hatched, its massive wings unfurling as it let out a deafening roar. The other dragons followed suit, their cries echoing through the chamber.

Aric stepped back, his heart racing as the dragons took to the air, their enormous forms casting long shadows over the temple. They circled above him, their eyes glowing with a fierce, untamed energy.

"Go," Aric whispered, his voice barely audible. "Go and defend Eldoria."

With a final roar, the dragons soared out of the temple, disappearing into the night sky.
