Chapter 15 - Downed

---May 1, 2016

---At Outskirts of Tokyo, Japan

Aiko slowly opened her eyes, disoriented and groggy. As her vision cleared, she realized she was in an abandoned warehouse filled with the eerie shadows of old trees pushing through the crumbling structure. Panic surged through her as she tried to scream, only to find her mouth gagged with a rough towel. Her hands were tightly bound, rendering her movements futile.

Before she could process her situation further, Kenji's blunt voice cut through the silence.

"Stay still."

he ordered, his tone flat and exhausted. He was slumped against a wall, clearly in pain, his face pale and sweat-drenched. His stomach, wrapped in bandages, was visibly swollen and red from the gunshot wound.

Aiko's eyes darted around the room, landing on the getaway driver, who sat silently in the corner, looking disturbed and nervous. He avoided eye contact, clearly out of his depth and regretting his involvement.

Out of the shadows, Ryujin emerged, holding a scalpel with a cruel smile playing on his lips.

"Well, well, look who's awake," he mocked, pointing the scalpel menacingly towards Aiko.

"You must be wondering why you're here."

Aiko's heart pounded in her chest. She tried to struggle against her restraints, her muffled cries filling the air. Ryujin chuckled darkly at her futile attempts.

"Don't waste your energy," Ryujin said, his voice dripping with malice.

"No one's coming to save you. Not your friend Little pianist, not anyone."

Kenji, wincing in pain, glared at Ryujin. "What's the plan now, Ryujin? You think torturing her is going to solve anything?"

Ryujin's smile faded slightly, a cold, calculating look replacing it. "Takashi will come for her. And when he does, we'll be ready. This is the only way to draw him out and end this."

Aiko's eyes widened in fear and defiance. She shook her head, trying to plead through her gag. Ryujin's eyes narrowed, and he leaned in closer, the scalpel glinting ominously in the dim light.

"You're just a pawn, Aiko," he whispered, his voice chilling.

"A means to an end. Takashi won't be able to resist coming after you, and when he does, we'll be waiting."

The driver, clearly uncomfortable, shifted uneasily in his corner.

"I didn't sign up for this," he muttered under his breath.

"I was just supposed to drive."

Ryujin shot him a sharp look. "You do what you're told, and you'll get out of this alive. Question me again, and you'll regret it."

The driver swallowed hard, nodding reluctantly. Aiko's eyes were filled with tears, her mind racing with thoughts of Takashi. She prayed he wouldn't walk into this trap, but deep down, she knew he would come for her.

Ryujin stood up straight, satisfied with the fear and chaos he had sown.

"Now we wait..." he said calmly, pocketing the scalpel.

"Takashi will be here soon enough. And when he arrives, we'll finish this once and for all."

The room fell into an uneasy silence, the tension thick in the air. Aiko's heart ached with both hope and dread, knowing that the final confrontation was imminent.

---But...

Kenji groaned, shifting uncomfortably against the wall.

"Are you even going to defend yourself, Ryujin? That kid is not wasting a single breath. He's coming to kill you, and he nearly got me."

He gestured weakly at his bandaged stomach.

"You're a narcissist, you know that?"

Ryujin, clearly irritated but trying to maintain his composure, pulled out a pistol and swung it around lazily.

"Defend myself? Of course, Kenji. I'm not the one lying helpless on the couch."

He gave a mocking smile, waving the gun in Kenji's direction.

"Besides, I'm more than ready for him."

The driver, who had been nervously glancing between Ryujin and the door, finally had enough. His fear peaked as he realized he might witness a violent shootout.

"I didn't stayed here for that. I'm out,"

he muttered, standing up and making a dash for the exit.

---Until...

Just as he reached the door, a gunshot echoed through the warehouse. The driver collapsed, a bullet hole clean through his forehead. His body hit the floor with a sickening thud.

Ryujin spun around, his eyes widening at the sight of a bullet hole in the entrance door. Slowly, the door creaked open, revealing Takashi standing there, holding Sato's revolver with a deadly calm. Behind him, Sato was on the ground, holding his head, shocked by the sudden violence.

The room was plunged into a tense silence as Takashi took a step forward, his eyes locked onto Ryujin.

"It's over, Ryujin," he said, his voice cold and resolute.

"Let Aiko go."

Ryujin's smirk suddenly faded, but he quickly recovered, aiming his pistol at Takashi.

"You think you can just walk in here and take her? You're outnumbered, and you've got nothing left."

Kenji, struggling to sit up, looked between Takashi and Ryujin. "You're an idiot, Ryujin. Can't you see he's serious? He'll kill us all."

Takashi's eyes flickered to Aiko, who was tied up and watching the scene with wide, terrified eyes.

"I don't care how many of you there are," he said, stepping forward again.

"I'm not leaving without Aiko."

Ryujin's grip tightened on his pistol, his bravado slipping.

"One more step, and I'll shoot," he threatened, though his voice betrayed a hint of uncertainty.

But Takashi suddenly took another step, his revolver unwavering.

"Go ahead," he challenged, his voice steady.

"But make sure, you won't miss."

A tense standoff ensued, the air thick with anticipation and fear. Aiko's muffled cries added to the tension, her eyes pleading with Takashi to be careful.

Finally, Ryujin seemed to make a decision. He lowered his pistol slightly, eyes narrowing at Takashi.

"You really think you can take me down, kid?" he sneered.

Takashi's gaze was unwavering. "No. But you can see it for yourself..."

In a sudden burst of movement, Ryujin lunged to the side, trying to gain a better angle. But Takashi suddenly fired, the shot echoing in the confined space. Ryujin stumbled, clutching his ear where the bullet had hit, but he didn't go down.

Kenji, seeing his chance, tried to crawl towards the fallen driver's gun. Takashi's eyes darted to him, and he fired another shot, hitting the ground near Kenji's hand, stopping him in his tracks.

"Stay down." Takashi warned, his voice hard.

Kenji froze, his eyes filled with fear and resignation. Ryujin, still clutching his bleeding ear, glared at Takashi.

"This isn't over," he spat.

Takashi moved forward, his revolver trained on Ryujin.

"Yes, it is." he said quietly, stepping over the driver's body and closing the distance between them.

With his free hand, Takashi pulled out a knife and quickly cut the ropes binding Aiko. She fell into his arms, sobbing with relief.

"You're safe now," Takashi whispered to her, his eyes never leaving Ryujin. "I've got you."

As the tension reached its peak, Sato finally managed to get to his feet, looking between the two adversaries.

"Takashi, let's go. We need to leave now," he urged, fear evident in his voice.

Takashi nodded, keeping his gun trained on Ryujin as he helped Aiko to her feet.

"This isn't over," Ryujin repeated, but his voice was weaker, less certain.

"It is for now," Takashi replied, backing towards the door with Aiko.

"But if you come after us again, I won't hesitate."

With that, Takashi and Aiko made their way out of the warehouse, leaving Ryujin and Kenji behind. The battle was over for now, but the war was far from finished.

---But...

Takashi was about to lead Aiko out of the warehouse when the sound of a pistol cocking echoed behind him. He froze, confusion flashing across his face. He was certain he had disarmed Ryujin, so who could it be?

Slowly, Takashi turned around, and his eyes widened in disbelief. Sato stood there, his hand trembling as he pointed a pistol at Takashi.

"Sato, what are you doing?" Takashi asked, his voice filled with confusion and a hint of betrayal.

Before Sato could respond, Ryujin burst into laughter, the sound echoing through the warehouse.

"Look at this," Ryujin said, mockingly patting Sato's shoulder.

"The detective finally grew a spine. Or maybe he's just too scared for his own skin."

Sato's eyes darted between Takashi and Ryujin, sweat dripping down his forehead.

"I... I have to do this, Takashi," he stammered.

"You don't understand. My family—"

"You think Ryujin's going to spare them?" Takashi interrupted, his voice cold.

"He's using you, Sato. You're a pawn to him."

Ryujin smirked, taking a step closer to Sato. "Don't listen to him, Detective. You know what's at stake here."

Sato's hand shook even more violently, the pistol wavering.

"I can't... I can't let anything happen to them," he muttered, almost to himself.

Takashi took a slow, deliberate step forward, his eyes locked on Sato's.

"And you think this is the way to protect them...By pointing a gun at the only person trying to stop Ryujin?"

Ryujin laughed again, leaning in close to Sato. "Come on, Sato. Pull the trigger. Show him you mean business."

Aiko, still clinging to Takashi, whispered urgently, "Please, Sato. Don't do this. He's lying to you."

Sato's eyes filled with tears, the weight of his decision crushing him. He looked at Takashi, then at Ryujin, his mind a whirl of conflicting emotions.

"I... I don't know what to do," he admitted, his voice breaking.

Ryujin's smirk faltered slightly, his grip tightening on Sato's shoulder. "Don't listen to them. Remember what's at stake."

Sato's hand wavered, the pistol dipping slightly.

"Takashi... I can't lose them," he whispered, his voice barely audible.

"You won't," Takashi said, his voice firm but compassionate.

"But you need to trust me. We can stop Ryujin together. For your family's sake, and for everyone else he's hurt."

Ryujin's eyes narrowed, sensing his control slipping. "Don't be a fool, Sato. He's manipulating you."

Sato looked back at Ryujin, then at Takashi. With a trembling hand, he suddenly raised the pistol and aimed it at Takashi again.

"Sato, no!" Takashi shouted, but Ryujin cut him off.

"Do it!" Ryujin commanded.

---Until...

Sato's face twisted in agony as he squeezed the trigger. But in a split second, Aiko pushed Takashi aside. The gunshot rang out, and the bullet struck Aiko in the head. She fell limp in front of Takashi's eyes, her body crumpling to the ground.

Time seemed to stand still as Takashi knelt beside Aiko, his mind unable to process the sight before him.

"Aiko... no..." he whispered, his voice breaking.

Kenji, horrified by what had just happened, immediately stood up despite his injury.

"We need to go," he said urgently, his voice filled with panic.

Ryujin, realizing the gravity of the situation, grabbed Kenji by the arm, helping him walk.

"Let's move," Ryujin commanded.

Sato, guilt and fear overwhelming him, quickly joined them. They rushed out of the warehouse, piling into the getaway vehicle. As the engine roared to life, they sped away, leaving Takashi alone with Aiko's lifeless body.

Takashi, still in shock, gently cradled Aiko in his arms.

"Aiko... I'm so sorry..." he murmured, tears streaming down his face. The weight of his failure crushed him, but deep within, a new resolve began to form. Ryujin and his accomplices had to pay for this. He would make sure of it.

As the sound of the car's engine faded into the distance, Takashi closed his eyes and took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. This wasn't over. Not by a long shot.

---Some time later...

Minutes after the escape, the car sped down the highway on the outskirts of town. Ryujin gripped the steering wheel tightly, his knuckles white from the force. His voice was filled with frustration and anger as he lashed out.

"Dammit, Sato!" Ryujin shouted.

"You were supposed to aim at Takashi, not Aiko!"

Sato, sitting in the backseat, buried his face in his hands, his body shaking. "I... I didn't mean to... She moved so fast... I couldn't control the shot..."

Ryujin slammed his fist against the steering wheel.

"You're a detective, for crying out loud! How could you screw this up so badly?"

Kenji, who was nursing his bandaged stomach, grimaced but managed to speak up. "We need to focus on what's next, not dwell on the past."

Ryujin shot a glare at Kenji.

"Next? There might not be a 'next' if we don't handle this right. Takashi's out for blood now."

Sato looked up, his eyes red and filled with regret. "What do we do now? How can we stop him?"

Ryujin took a deep breath, trying to calm his boiling rage.

"We stay ahead of him. He's going to come after us, no question. But we're not running away. We face him head-on."

Kenji nodded, though his voice showed his doubt. "But how? We're already losing ground. He knows too much."

Ryujin's expression hardened. "We adapt. We play every card we have. We use Aiko's death to our advantage. It's a tragedy, but it might just give us the leverage we need."

Sato, weighed down by guilt, shook his head slightly. "I never wanted it to go this far... I never wanted anyone to get hurt..."

Ryujin's tone was icy as he focused on the road.

"It's too late for regrets now, Sato. We're in this deep, and there's no easy way out. If we don't fight, we're as good as dead."

The car was silent for a moment as the seriousness of their situation sunk in. Ryujin drove with a determined gaze, his mind working on a plan.

Kenji finally spoke again, his tone serious. "So, what's the plan? How do we draw him out?"

Ryujin met his eyes briefly in the rearview mirror. "We set a trap. We make him comle to us, and we make sure we're ready."

Sato, his heart heavy with the recent events, stared out the window, his voice soft and uncertain.

"And if we fail? What if he's always one step ahead?"

Ryujin tightened his grip on the steering wheel. "Then we keep fighting. We can't afford to lose. Not at this point."

As they raced down the highway, the city lights dwindling behind them, they were all too aware of the grave challenges ahead. Takashi, fueled by vengeance and grief, was a formidable foe. Ryujin knew the conflict was far from over, but he was resolute to do whatever necessary to come out alive.

The tension in the car was a constant reminder of their harsh reality—there was no turning back now. The path ahead was fraught with danger, and their showdown with Takashi was inevitable.
