Chapter 9 - The Journey Begins

That morning, gentle sunshine shone over the building where they were hiding. Akira, Eky, Alice, and the other group of crossers gathered in the middle room to discuss their plans. Akira, who is now considered a temporary leader, unveils a map of the city they found in one of the rooms."According to the information we have, there is a military post on the north side of the city," Akira said, pointing to the map. "It's probably the safest place for us to go."

"How do we know they're still there?" asked Alice with doubts.

"We don't know for sure," Akira replied, "but that's the only clue we have. We have to take this risk."

Eky nodded. "Well, we have to move fast and stay together.

After packing food and water supplies, the group left the building. The streets look quiet, but they're still vigilant. Every strange sound makes them stop for a moment and make sure there's no danger.

They walked through the ruins of buildings and the destroyed vehicles. Zombie-zombie wanderers make them have to stop a few times and find alternative routes. Eky with her baseball stick, Alice with her tennis rocket, and Akira with her bullet shot, ready to face the threat at any time.

After a few hours of walking, they arrived at a bridge connecting the southern and northern parts of the city, however, the bridge was partially damaged and looked fragile.

"We have to get through it one by one," Akira said. "Don't let anyone fall."

Eky was the first to cross. Carefully, he stepped onto the remaining wooden boards. Having managed to cross, he gave a signal to the others. Alice and Akira followed, and then the others one by one.

When they all managed to cross, they heard heavy footsteps behind them. Some zombies have approached the bridge. Akira and Eky quickly took the front position to fight.

"Don't let them get close!" Akira cried.

The zombies are moving at a surprising speed, their empty eyes are filled with a desire to kill. Akira swings his bullet with full force, breaking the head of one of the zombies. Blood and bits of meat, but the other zombies keep coming.

Eky swing his baseball stick hard, hitting the second zombie right on his cheek, making him wander and fall off a fragile bridge. "Come on! We have to stay here!" she cried.

Alice, with a tennis rocket in her hand, jumped to the side to avoid a zombie's grip. He hit him with a rocket, right in the skull, leaving him on the floor of the bridge. "They're getting more!" she cried, panicking.

Another group of crossers tried to block the gate at the end of the bridge, but more and more zombies emerged from the dark. Some of them fell into the river below, but their number doesn't seem to decrease.

Eky rotates sharply, hitting another zombie's head, but he's starting to get tired. "We can't stand this long!" he said with a shaky breath.

Akira, swiftly thinking, grabbed some wooden boards lying near them and made a temporary barricade. "Use this to block them!" she cried. Eky and Alice helped him, as the zombies were getting closer.

When they were almost desperate, a loud explosion sounded from the end of the bridge. A series of shots flaring in the air, hitting the remaining zombies. Eky shrugged his hand, signaling them to run.

"They came to help!" cried Eky.

A bunch of soldiers appeared, shooting at zombies with lethal accuracy. In seconds, the zombies were destroyed and scattered on the floor of the bridge. The soldiers hurried toward them.

"Are you all right?" asked one of the soldiers, stretching out his hand.

"Yes, thank you. We're almost out."

The soldier nodded. "Come on, we'll take you to the military post. You're safe now."

With a new sense of relief and hope, Akira, Eky, Alice, and other groups of crossers follow the army into the military building. They know that their journey is not over, but they now have a chance to survive and maybe, one day, restore the world to its original state.
