The key difference between Kailean academy and the others is that only the most promising Awakened are allowed to enter, yes the classic cliche that was present in so many other novels, the all-powerful and almighty system that transcends the limitations of the normal body.
On the day of the gate calamity, a select few members of humanity and all the other races were offered a choice. To accept a sponsorship from a deity. The normal deal was that in return for awakening your system and assisting you in your growth, you must spread their fame and increase their believers upon the unawakened.
Of course, there were some beings that managed to unlock the system though their own efforts, but they are extremely rare and they were significantly weaker compared to the being's that were sponsored thus they die easily.
The reason? Quite simple, the system works the same as a game system.
The fastest way to increase your power is by completing quests or by combat/crafting.
And the quest givers are the deities, your sponsor's. And therefore there are not many unsponsored Awakened. but don't be mistaken, the deity's can only sponsor ONE life form at a time, so being chosen by one is praise worth and enough to get you a scholarship. But that does not apply to their blessings, for example if an awaken was really god at war craft, they might be blessed by Ares even though there chosen by Odin.
But to every rule their is exceptions. For example if your parents are chosen by a god before you were conceived, there is a chance that you might be blessed by the gods and be born with an awakened.
To sum it up, if your parents or parent are awakened, there is a chance that you will inherit the powers of one or both parents, but not be chosen your self.
If this is the case, there is a chance that you would be accepted even though you aren't sponsored.

"I'm dead" I say as I observe my status in despair. "I'm weaker than the a child" I start thinking about what will happen in the future, demons overwhelming everything, the destruction of most of the world due to the demons. and the millions of people that die. "wait I'm 12?"
"no no no no no, I don't want to be around twelvees again, they are full of 8th grader syndrome!" I start crying, receiving weird looks from the people entering the city.
after about ten minutes of crying on my knees in front of the gate I realize that, hey I'm 12, the novel starts when the protagonist is 16, so I have time right?
I wipe my knees off and check what I have on me. I have a letter and 1 silver and 10 copper coins.
with a trembling hand I open the letter, praying that it holds good news.
