The inky darkness of the night enveloped the winding road which was leading them to the next city, the only illuminating beams coming from the headlights of the vehicle cutting through the veil of black. The steady hum of the engine and the occasional crunch of gravel beneath the tyres were the only sounds that punctuated the eerie silence within the vehicle. As Luciano navigated the narrow country road, his eyes constantly scanned the shadows.
At a red light, he instinctively slammed on the brakes. The car lurched to a halt, the tyres screeching in protest and beside him, the reaper let out a curse under his breath. Cautiously, he looked up at the rearview mirror to check on the mortal. He was fortunately held in place by his seatbelt and when he glanced at his face, he realised that he was trying very hard to stay awake.
"Hey," he called out to the mortal softly and he stirred awake, blinking the sleep out of his eyes.
