Chapter 10 - Chapter Nine : Friends' Visit

As Hannah was alone in the apartment, she hadn't expected any visitors. So, when she heard the knock on the door, she was both surprised and curious. With a hint of caution, she approached the door and peered through the peephole. Outside stood Daniel's three friends from college, chatting and laughing amongst themselves.

With a furrowed brow, Hannah hesitated for a moment. Daniel hadn't mentioned any plans for visitors, and she wasn't sure what to make of their unexpected appearance. Nevertheless, she took a deep breath and opened the door.

"Um, hi?" Hannah greeted, offering a tentative smile as she glanced at the group.

The young men turned towards her, their expressions shifting from animated chatter to surprise at the sight of her. One of them, a tall guy with dark hair, stepped forward.

"Hey there," he said with a friendly grin. "We're Daniel's friends from college. We thought we'd drop by and surprise him."

Hannah's surprise deepened. Daniel's friends? She hadn't realized he was still in touch with them. "Oh, I see. Nice to meet you all," she replied, though her tone remained cautious.

As the four boys stepped into the apartment, Hannah's mind raced with questions. Why were Daniel's friends visiting? Had something happened? She offered them seats in the living room, trying to keep her composure despite her growing curiosity.

"So, you guys are friends of Daniel?" she asked, trying to sound casual as she gestured for them to sit down.

Jake, the sandy-haired guy who seemed to be the unofficial spokesperson of the group, nodded with a grin. "Yeah, we go way back. We heard he's staying here, so we thought we'd drop by and surprise him."

Hannah relaxed slightly, relieved that their visit seemed to be nothing more than a friendly surprise. "That's nice of you. Daniel's at work right now, but he should be back soon."

With that, she turned and headed back to the kitchen, her mind already spinning with thoughts of how to manage this unexpected visit. She quickly picked up her phone and dialed Daniel's number.

"Hey, Daniel," she said when he answered. "Your friends are here. They showed up unexpectedly. Thought you should know."

"Thanks for the heads-up, Hannah. I'll try to get home as soon as I can," Daniel replied, sounding surprised but pleased.

After hanging up, Hannah looked around the kitchen. She decided to prepare some snacks and juice for Daniel's friends while continuing with dinner preparations. As she was busy chopping vegetables, she heard a knock on the kitchen door.

She turned to see one of Daniel's friends standing there. He had an incredible presence about him—tall, with sharp features and an air of quiet confidence. His expression was calm and composed, a stark contrast to the lively chatter in the living room.

"Do you need any help?" he asked, his voice deep and steady.

Hannah nodded, appreciating the offer. "Sure, you can help me with the snacks. I'm making some juice and finger foods."

The man stepped into the kitchen and started assisting her. He moved with a quiet efficiency, his actions deliberate and precise. Despite his cold exterior, there was something comforting about his presence. He didn't smile and spoke only when necessary, but his assistance was invaluable.

As they worked together, Hannah found herself surprisingly comfortable with him. His silence matched her own introverted nature, creating a peaceful atmosphere. Occasionally, they exchanged a few words about the preparations, but mostly, they worked in companionable silence.

"What's your name?" Hannah asked after a while, curious about this intriguing man.

"Patrick Williamson," he replied simply, focusing on slicing some vegetables.

"Thanks for helping, Patrick," she said, appreciating his quiet support.

Patrick nodded, acknowledging her gratitude. "No problem. Daniel's a good friend. Just wanted to help out."

As Hannah and Patrick worked seamlessly together in the kitchen, the atmosphere in the living room remained tense. Jake, Mike, and Lucas exchanged nervous glances, their usual banter replaced by a heavy silence.

"Did you see that?" Jake whispered, eyes wide with disbelief.

"Yeah, Patrick actually went to help in the kitchen," Mike replied, his voice barely above a whisper. "I've never seen him do that. Ever."

Lucas nodded in agreement, looking equally shocked. "And with a girl, no less. This is... unprecedented."

They decided to keep quiet, not wanting to disrupt the rare moment. There was an unspoken agreement among them: better to stay silent and avoid drawing Patrick's attention. The atmosphere was thick with a mix of curiosity and unease, as they were used to Patrick's aloof and reserved nature.

Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Hannah and Patrick continued their preparations. The silent yet efficient cooperation between them created an unexpectedly harmonious environment. Hannah appreciated Patrick's help more than she let on, especially considering the daunting task of cooking for a group she didn't know well.

As she stirred a pot of sauce, she glanced at Patrick, who was skillfully chopping vegetables. "You seem pretty good at this," she remarked, breaking the silence.

Patrick's expression remained neutral. "I like cooking sometimes. It's... therapeutic."

Hannah nodded, understanding the sentiment. "I get that. Thanks for helping, by the way. It's been a long time since I've cooked for a group."

Patrick gave a slight nod, continuing his work. "No problem. It's the least I can do."

As they neared the completion of their tasks, Hannah felt a subtle shift in the dynamic. She realized that Patrick, despite his cold exterior, was someone she could work with easily. His presence was steadying, and she found herself appreciating his silent strength.

Just then, the front door opened, and Daniel walked in, immediately sensing the tension in the living room. "Hey, everyone," he greeted, looking around. "What's going on?"

Jake, Mike, and Lucas remained tight-lipped, glancing towards the kitchen. Daniel followed their gaze, noticing Patrick and Hannah working side by side. A knowing smile spread across his face as he approached them.

"Thanks for holding down the fort, Hannah," Daniel said, giving her a warm smile. "And Patrick, thanks for helping out."

Patrick merely nodded, his expression unchanged. "No problem."

Shortly after, Abby arrived from Zplay, her eyes lighting up as she saw the spread of food. "Wow, this looks amazing! Did you do all this, Hannah?"

Hannah smiled modestly. "Patrick helped a lot. It was a team effort."

Dinner was soon ready, and Hannah began serving the food with Patrick's help. The other three boys, still in a state of shock, quietly took their seats at the table, making sure to remain on their best behavior.

As they all gathered around the table, Daniel took his seat next to Hannah, casting a protective glance around the room. The atmosphere was initially quiet, a stark contrast to the usual lively gatherings. Daniel noticed the unease and decided to break the ice.

"So, how's everyone enjoying the food?" he asked, trying to lighten the mood.

"It's great," Jake quickly replied, his tone a bit too enthusiastic. "Really, really good."

"Yeah, Hannah did an amazing job," Mike added, nodding vigorously.

Lucas, not wanting to be left out, chimed in, "Best meal we've had in ages."

Hannah smiled modestly. "Thank you. I'm glad you like it."

Patrick, who had been quietly eating, finally spoke up. "It's really good. Thanks, Hannah."

His simple compliment seemed to lift some of the tension in the room. The others, still wary of breaking the unusual calm, relaxed slightly, allowing the conversation to flow more naturally.

Abby, noticing the awkwardness among the boys, decided to steer the conversation. "So, how did everyone meet Daniel?" she asked, looking around the table.

Mike cleared his throat, glad for the distraction. "We all went to high school together. Played on the same soccer team. Daniel was our star player."

"Yeah," Jake added, grinning. "He always made sure we stayed out of trouble. Well, most of the time."

Daniel chuckled, shaking his head. "I remember having to drag you out of some pretty tight spots, Jake."

As the stories flowed and laughter filled the room, the initial awkwardness dissipated. The boys gradually resumed their usual banter, but with a newfound respect for Patrick's unexpected kitchen skills and his willingness to help Hannah.

By the end of the meal, the atmosphere was much more relaxed. Abby and Hannah exchanged a satisfied glance, glad that the evening had turned out well. As they began to clear the table, Patrick stood to help with the dishes, his presence in the kitchen once again drawing silent astonishment from his friends.

"Thanks again for your help," Hannah said quietly as they worked side by side at the sink.

Patrick simply nodded. "Anytime."

As the evening wound down, Daniel pulled Hannah aside. "You did great tonight," he said. "Thanks for handling everything so well."

Hannah shrugged modestly. "It wasn't a big deal. Your friends are nice."

Daniel smiled. "Yeah, they are. And Patrick...well, he doesn't usually do this kind of thing. You must have made quite an impression."

Hannah glanced at Patrick, who was finishing up the last of the dishes, his movements precise and deliberate.
