The flight from New York to Toronto felt interminable for Emily. Her mind raced with worries and the myriad risks they would face once they landed. The cabin chatter and occasional baby cries only served to heighten her unease. Her thoughts oscillated between Alex's safety and the well-being of the twins back home.
Upon landing, Emily followed the stream of passengers out of the plane. Just as she stepped onto the pathway toward customs, her phone rang, displaying an unknown caller. Knowing it was likely Julian, she answered immediately.
"Emmy, I told you to come alone," Julian's voice pierced through the line.
Emily froze, scanning her surroundings for any signs of suspicious individuals trailing her. Julian somehow knew that Ed and two other men had accompanied her. She remained silent for a moment, calculating her next move.
"I'll come to see you alone. They won't follow me," she finally responded.
