Chapter 18 - When Did I Become So Free?

The scent of fresh coffee filled the air as Hanada and Akari entered their favorite café, a quaint little spot just off campus. The sun was shining brightly, casting a warm glow over the tables and the patrons who were leisurely enjoying their Saturday morning.

"Two cappuccinos, please," Akari said to the barista, giving Hanada a playful nudge. "And make them extra frothy!"

Hanada chuckled, shaking his head. "You and your froth obsession."

"Hey, the froth is the best part!" Akari retorted, grinning.

As they waited for their drinks, Hanada took a moment to reflect. It had been a whirlwind few weeks, filled with academic responsibilities, personal challenges, and the ever-present shadow of Ayaka. But amidst the chaos, he realized something unexpected: he felt... free.

Once they had their drinks, they found a cozy corner to sit in. Akari sipped her cappuccino with a content sigh, while Hanada watched her with a smile.

"You know, Akari," he said thoughtfully, "I've been feeling different lately. More... free-spirited, I guess."

Akari looked at him, curiosity in her eyes. "What do you mean?"

Hanada took a sip of his cappuccino, savoring the rich flavor. "I don't know exactly. It's just that, with everything that's happened, I've started to see things differently. I'm more willing to take risks, to enjoy the little moments. I think it's because of you."

Akari blushed slightly, her eyes twinkling. "Me? What did I do?"

"You've shown me that it's okay to let go sometimes, to not always be so serious. You've brought so much joy into my life, Akari. You've made me realize that there's more to life than just responsibilities and fears."

Akari reached across the table, taking his hand. "I'm glad to hear that, Hanada-kun. You've always been such a serious person, but there's so much more to you. And I'm so happy that you're discovering that."

Hanada smiled, feeling a warmth spread through him. "Thank you, Akari. For everything."

After finishing their drinks, Hanada and Akari decided to take a walk through the city. They strolled through the bustling streets, stopping to admire the various street performers and artists who had set up their displays.

"Hey, look at this," Akari said, pointing to a booth where a caricature artist was sketching quick, exaggerated portraits of passersby. "Let's get one done!"

Hanada hesitated, feeling a bit self-conscious. "I don't know, Akari. Those things always make me look ridiculous."

"That's the fun part!" Akari laughed, tugging him towards the artist. "Come on, Hanada-kun. Let's do something silly."

Before Hanada could protest further, Akari had already paid the artist and they were sitting on the stools, waiting for their turn. The artist, a middle-aged man with a bushy mustache and twinkling eyes, looked at them with a mischievous grin.

"So, a lovely couple, eh? Let's see what I can do for you," he said, his hands moving deftly over the paper.

As the artist sketched, Hanada found himself relaxing, enjoying the playful banter between Akari and the artist. When the portrait was finally revealed, Hanada couldn't help but laugh. The caricature was exaggerated, with his own serious expression comically overemphasized and Akari's playful smile drawn wide and bright.

"This is great!" Akari exclaimed, holding the drawing up to examine it. "What do you think, Hanada-kun?"

Hanada chuckled, nodding. "It's perfect. We should frame it."

They thanked the artist and continued their walk, the caricature carefully rolled up and tucked under Hanada's arm. As they wandered, they stumbled upon a small park where a group of people were flying kites. The sight of the colorful kites soaring in the sky caught Akari's attention.

"Let's fly a kite, Hanada-kun!" she said, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

Hanada laughed, shaking his head in amazement. "Where do you get all this energy, Akari?"

"Come on, it'll be fun!" she insisted, pulling him towards a nearby kiosk where kites were being sold.

They chose a bright red kite with a dragon design and headed to an open spot in the park. As they struggled to get the kite airborne, they couldn't stop laughing at their own clumsiness.

"You're supposed to run, Hanada-kun!" Akari called out, her voice filled with laughter.

"I am running!" Hanada replied, his own laughter echoing hers. "This kite has a mind of its own!"

After several failed attempts, they finally managed to get the kite soaring high into the sky. They watched it dance on the wind, the red dragon looking majestic against the blue backdrop.

"This is amazing," Hanada said, breathless from laughter and running. "I can't remember the last time I did something like this."

"Me neither," Akari admitted, her eyes fixed on the kite. "It's so simple, but so much fun."

They spent the rest of the afternoon in the park, flying the kite and enjoying each other's company. As the sun began to set, they lay on the grass, watching the sky change colors.

"Today was perfect," Akari said softly, turning to look at Hanada. "Thank you for indulging my crazy ideas."

Hanada smiled, reaching out to brush a strand of hair from her face. "Thank you for showing me how to enjoy life, Akari. I never knew I could feel so free."

Back on campus, Hanada found himself embracing his newfound sense of freedom. He started saying yes to things he would have previously avoided, like joining a group of students for a spontaneous late-night karaoke session.

"Hanada-kun, you have to sing with us!" Yui insisted, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Come on, it'll be fun!"

Hanada hesitated, but then he remembered his promise to himself to be more open and free-spirited. "Alright, fine. But don't expect too much. I'm terrible at singing."

As they crowded into the small karaoke room, Hanada felt a mix of nervousness and exhilaration. He had always avoided such social gatherings, preferring the solitude of his studies. But now, surrounded by friends and the infectious energy of the moment, he felt alive in a way he hadn't before.

When it was his turn to sing, Hanada took the microphone, his heart pounding. The opening notes of a popular song filled the room, and he began to sing, his voice shaky at first but growing stronger with each verse. To his surprise, he found himself enjoying it, the laughter and cheers of his friends boosting his confidence.

"Hanada-kun, you're amazing!" Yui cheered, clapping enthusiastically as he finished the song.

Hanada laughed, feeling a sense of accomplishment and joy. "That was actually fun. I never thought I'd say that about karaoke."

As the night wore on, Hanada and his friends sang, laughed, and bonded over their shared experiences. It was a night of pure, unadulterated fun, and Hanada realized just how much he had been missing out on.

In the weeks that followed, Hanada continued to embrace his new outlook on life. He joined Akari and their friends for impromptu adventures, like late-night trips to the beach, hiking in the nearby mountains, and even trying his hand at cooking exotic dishes.

One evening, as they gathered in Akari's dorm kitchen to cook a Thai feast, Hanada found himself chopping vegetables with surprising enthusiasm.

"I never thought I'd see the day when Hanada-kun would be in the kitchen, cooking," Kenta joked, watching as Hanada expertly sliced bell peppers.

"Hey, people can change," Hanada replied with a grin. "Besides, cooking is actually pretty fun."

Akari smiled, her eyes filled with pride. "You've come a long way, Hanada-kun. I'm so proud of you."

"Thanks, Akari," he said, feeling a warm glow in his chest. "I couldn't have done it without you."

As they cooked and laughed together, Hanada felt a deep sense of contentment. He had discovered a side of himself he never knew existed, and he had Akari and his friends to thank for that.

Later, as they sat around the table, enjoying the delicious meal they had prepared, Hanada looked around at the faces of his friends, feeling grateful for each and every one of them.

"You know," he said, raising his glass, "I've realized something important. Life is too short to be serious all the time. We need to make room for joy, for spontaneity, and for the people who make it all worthwhile."

"Hear, hear!" Yui cheered, clinking her glass against Hanada's. "To living life to the fullest!"

"To friendship and adventure!" Kenta added, raising his glass.

"And to love," Akari said softly, her eyes meeting Hanada's.

"To love," Hanada echoed, feeling a swell of emotion. "And to being free-spirited."

They clinked their glasses together, the sound a symbol of their shared commitment to living life with joy and passion.
