Chapter 97 - Are You Never Free?

Bang!

Kara, who had been on the defensive, finally exploded.

She slammed her hands on the ground and jumped into the air, rushing towards Eric with a "whoosh."

The sudden burst of speed caught even Eric off guard.

He crossed his arms to shield his chest, but in the next second, he was hit by a streaking attack.

Kara's fist struck the shield formed by Eric's arms.

A loud crack resounded as the air exploded!

Eric was knocked backward.

Fortunately, his arms shielded him from most of the impact.

Eric was sent flying several meters back, his feet carving deep furrows in the ground.

Regaining his balance, he stood up immediately and shot red laser beams from his eyes at Kara.

Kara wasn't to be outdone; she fired her own laser beams filled with immense heat energy at Eric.

The two beams met in midair!

The red energy scorched the air, creating a dazzling light in the dark night.

The trio in the nearby car winced in pain as the red light hurt their eyes, forcing them to cover their faces.

At the intersection of their heat vision, red sparks flew outward from the collision.

"In a sense, you awakened faster than Kal-El. This power is highly consistent with Kryptonian abilities!"

While firing laser beams from her eyes, Kara spoke to Eric: "I'm starting to suspect your origins are from Krypton. Like Clark, I can sense it!"

"Is that so?"

Eric increased the power of his heat vision. "It seems like you're the one who thinks you're going to win!"

He suddenly retracted his heat vision and dodged Kara's beams, rushing at her close to the ground.

Using his sudden burst of power and momentum, he tackled her waist and drove her forward.

They shot forward along the ground like a cannonball, crashing through trees with loud snaps.

Bam! Bam! Bam!

Supergirl's back hit a thick tree, snapping it in half. Before the tree could fall, they crashed into another one.

The sound of snapping trees echoed continuously as they plowed through the forest like a logging machine.

Jonathan and Martha couldn't see the battle but heard the constant cracking of trees and the distant sound of falling timber.

"I hope Eric is okay."

Martha clasped her hands together in prayer for Eric.

Jonathan held his wife close, his face serious.

The trio in the car watched the distant trees fall, their eyes filled with shock.

"Maybe... maybe 'Chuck' was right."

("Chuck" referred to the goggles of the Midnight Doctor.)

The Midnight Doctor, a black woman, covered her bleeding forehead and said to the others: "Chuck may be quirky sometimes, but at this moment, I think the only explanation is aliens. Courtney, you might never get your staff back."

"Maybe."

A weak-sounding Courtney listened to the distant explosions, her heart sinking.

She had thought Eric Kent's fight with Brainwave was impressive enough.

But his battle with that strange woman was on a whole new level!

Did he not use his full strength against Brainwave?

Courtney regretted coming here. If she had known Eric Kent was such a monster, she wouldn't have been goaded into coming, even without the Cosmic Staff.

She had not only gotten Time Master killed but also put her friends in life-or-death situations.

Now, she understood what Pat had been trying to tell her.

She truly was naive and ignorant!

On the other side, Eric and Supergirl's fight had reached a fever pitch.

He had thought that the fully-powered Supergirl would surpass him, given his Homeland template was only 85% complete.

But after fighting her, he found that she wasn't stronger than him.

In terms of strength, speed, or combat experience, they were evenly matched.

Her explosive power was troublesome, but it was manageable.

Bang!

Eric's punch hit Kara's chest, sending her flying.

He immediately used his super speed to follow up with a punch to her chin.

Kara, reacting quickly, blocked with her arms, stopping Eric's attack.

"Eric!"

At that moment, Clark finally arrived.

Though curious about what Kara had said about his origins, he trusted his family more than seeking the truth about himself.

Shaking off his daze, he moved to join Eric in fighting Kara.

But before he could act, Eric grabbed Kara's arm, and they both shot into the sky.

Once in the air, Kara punched at Eric.

He blocked it and countered with a straight punch, continuing their fight.

Bang!

Eric's punch hit Supergirl's face, the force almost knocking her from the sky.

But Eric grabbed her arm, followed by another straight punch!

Kara, briefly stunned, couldn't resist Eric's blow and fell back with a groan.

Seeing her dazed, Eric let go, letting her fall from the sky.

With a thud, Supergirl hit the ground hard, causing a slight tremor.

Eric then descended from the sky.

"She!"

Clark looked at the fallen Kara and then at Eric descending from the sky.

Was it over?

He thought Kara's strength would at least put up a fight against Eric, but she was defeated in minutes.

Had Eric gotten stronger?

Or was Kara not as strong as he thought?

Seeing Eric approach, Clark pushed his jumbled thoughts aside and asked Eric:

"Is she dead?!"

"I don't know."

Eric walked towards the unconscious Kara.

"She said she's from Krypton, and our father is Jor-El. Is that true, Eric?"

Clark, feeling excited, asked Eric.

He knew Eric knew more than he did.

Jonathan and Martha had told him that Eric had drawn crayon pictures as a child of planets exploding and spaceships escaping.

Eric had also drawn a spaceship being hit by meteors and veering off course.

This indicated that Eric remembered their origins from a young age.

Moreover, Eric's drawings matched Kara's descriptions.

Clark, seeking the truth, believed Eric remembered some childhood memories.

What puzzled him was why Eric seemed uninterested in their origins.

"If you believe her, Clark, why ask me?"

Eric glanced at his older brother.

"I... I don't know, but I know you know something. You drew those crayon pictures that match Kara's descriptions. I still remember."

Clark regretted tearing up Eric's drawings out of jealousy when they were kids. Now, he had no evidence.

"If we're not from Earth, but from Krypton, what's our purpose here? Conquest, or did our parents abandon us? I really want to know, Eric."

"You think you're not free?"

Eric suddenly approached Clark, questioning him.

"What?"

"If you think you're not free, trapped in an invincible cage, then you might choose to live differently!"

Eric was tired of Clark's whining.

"I don't care about my biological father or what Jor-El wants. If he tries to control my life, even if he's my father, I'll fight back! I know what I want to do, and I've told you many times, that's our difference, Clark!"

Eric's voice carried anger, "Martha is pregnant. Do you know her feelings? Fear, worry, constant pain of loss. So, remember one thing: your name is Clark Kent, not Kal-El!"

"I..."

Clark was stunned by Eric's anger, unable to respond.

Just then, Jonathan and Martha arrived in the woods.

Seeing Eric safe, they sighed in relief.

"Eric, are you okay?"

Jonathan patted his son's shoulder.

He had heard Eric's words and felt a wave of warmth.

Compared to Clark's obsession with his identity, Eric showed clarity and reason.

"I'm fine, just some torn clothes."

Eric replied to his father.

Martha hugged Eric gently, brushing dust from his forehead.

"That's good."

She then looked at the unconscious Kara, "What about her? She killed a child. Should we call the police?"

"No!"

Jonathan shook his head, "I don't think the police can hold her, and if the government finds out, it could be a big problem."

"She has strong ties to Krypton."

Eric walked to the unconscious Kara, his eyes glowing red.

"If she's an alien, there's no need for law!"

It was well-known that human rights didn't apply to aliens. Even Batman, who avoided killing, often broke this rule with aliens.

In the next moment, Eric's eyes were about to fire lasers to finish her.

But Jonathan stopped him.

"No! Eric, wait! I've asked Chloe to investigate her. Maybe she's a meteor-affected human like Coach Watts."

Before he could finish, a bright light enveloped Kara.

The intense light blinded everyone. When they adjusted, Kara was gone.

"What?"

Jonathan looked at Eric and Clark in shock, "What happened?"

"Maybe it was Jor-El!"

Eric speculated.

The strong light was impenetrable, even for him.

Is he finally making a move?

Good!

If he dares to show his claws, he must be prepared to be bitten.

Jonathan looked at Eric.

He noticed his son's hostility when mentioning Jor-El.

If Kara was right and Jor-El was their biological father, why did Eric show such hatred?

Despite being brothers, their attitudes towards their father were vastly different.

On the other side, Clark stared at the spot where Kara had lain, feeling conflicted.

Smallville Medical Center.

Courtney awoke from her painful daze to see a tall, beautiful doctor standing before her.

"You're awake? Miss Courtney?"

"Wh... where am I? Doctor."

She glanced around and asked the doctor, trying to move her arm but feeling intense pain from the bandages.

"Smallville Medical Center. You were badly injured in a car accident. Luckily, no internal damage. You'll need a few months to recover. By the way, you can call me Dr. Helen."

Helen smiled at Courtney.

Courtney, still groggy, was about to speak when the door opened, and her stepfather Pat walked in.

Judging by his gloomy face, he wasn't in a good

 mood.

"Dad!"

Courtney weakly called out, but Pat ignored her, turning to Helen.

"Can we talk alone, Doctor?"

Helen nodded, left the room, and closed the door.

"Good."

Pat looked at Courtney, his face tense with anger.

Seeing her injured and bandaged, his anger grew.

"You really want to die, don't you, Courtney?"

"Dad, listen to me..."

"Shut up!"

Pat's anger reached its peak, "Listen? I don't want to hear anything from you! I don't care what you do! Eric's battle has nothing to do with you! You got Time Master killed, and almost everyone else!"

Courtney cried silently, "But I..."

"No buts! You're grounded for a month! No superhero activities!"

Pat turned away, ending the conversation.

Seeing her stepfather's anger and pain, Courtney felt more regret than ever.

She had really made a mess of things this time.
