Chapter 81 - The Devil Falls from the Sky

Kansas, Blue Valley High School.

Jessica walked through the school hallway with her backpack on.

After leaving Smallville with her father, the two of them moved to Blue Valley.

Even though moving had become a regular occurrence for her, she was still somewhat unhappy about having to adapt to a new school as a transfer student.

Dressed in punk attire, with heavy eyeliner and chewing gum, Jessica quickly became the center of attention for the high school boys.

As she passed an office, Jessica heard the sound of an argument coming from inside.

"I don't understand. Blue Valley High used to have a gymnastics team. Why are you telling me there isn't one, Ms. Jennifer?"

"There was, last year," replied a middle-aged woman's voice. "But to maximize student participation, the American Dream has adjusted the academic sports programs."

A high school girl's voice responded, "Sorry, Ms. Jennifer, but I didn't understand a word you said."

"What I mean is, there are many extracurricular activities here, like the cheerleading squad, which is similar to gymnastics, and the boys love cheerleaders."

"I'm not interested in cheerleading."

The high school girl expressed her lack of interest in cheerleading.

A few seconds later, the office door opened, and a curly-haired girl with brown skin came out, almost bumping into Jessica.

"Sorry," the curly-haired girl quickly apologized to Jessica.

"It's okay," Jessica replied, glancing at the girl's figure with a subtle smile.

"I felt like I was hit by something soft."

"Hehe."

The curly-haired girl gave an awkward smile and extended her hand to Jessica. "Courtney. Courtney Whitman, that's my name."

"Jessica Lopez."

Jessica shook her hand and replied casually.

"I've only been at this school for a week, so I don't understand much. Everything seems awful."

Courtney used her unfortunate situation to start a conversation with Jessica.

"Me too," Jessica nodded. "I'm a transfer student today."

"Wow!"

Courtney looked excited. "What a coincidence! I moved here from California."

The two of them talked as they walked to the classroom.

Since they were both new to the school, they quickly found common ground.

During lunch, Courtney took Jessica to the school cafeteria.

As soon as they sat down, they overheard someone talking about the heroic deeds of a superhero called "Starlight."

"Starlight?"

Jessica looked at Courtney in confusion.

"Yes, a superhero who appeared in Blue Valley. She uses a staff to beat up bad guys," Courtney said proudly. "But I don't think the name Starlight suits her. I heard the superhero is a girl, so maybe we should call her Stargirl. What do you think?"

Jessica glanced at the excited Courtney. "Do you know this Starlight, or should I say Stargirl?"

"No, but everyone has been talking about her recently. Some say she's the revived Star-Spangled Kid, and others say she's the new inheritor. But superheroes and saving the world—isn't that interesting to you?"

"No," Jessica shook her head, putting down her burger.

The indelible image of Eric and Clark's battle was etched in her mind.

That earth-shattering fight had shattered her worldview and reshaped her understanding of the world.

In her new worldview, Eric and Clark stood at the pinnacle of power.

The power they unleashed would absolutely be world-destroying.

Stories of superheroes patrolling the streets seemed like childish games to her.

"It just feels like a child's game of pretend," Jessica said to Courtney.

"You've never seen that kind of power."

After tasting some terrible green peas, Courtney frowned. "Stargirl's staff can emit energy powerful enough to destroy a car and even allow her to fly. Right now, she's busy fighting villains. Maybe we could support her."

"Um... Jessica, have you heard of the Justice Society of America?"

"Mm-hmm, I've heard they're a bunch of people in weird costumes who call themselves superheroes. Who cares about the self-glorification of a bunch of frauds?"

Jessica frowned, thinking the cafeteria food was terrible.

Worse than the cafeteria food was the chatty girl in front of her.

"They're not frauds. The heroes of the Justice Society have just retired. I think Stargirl could reassemble the Justice Society to fight those villains. What do you think?"

"You've never seen a real battle."

Jessica was getting annoyed with this naive girl.

"Moving so fast you can't see, ears ringing with the sound of air explosions. Jumping dozens of meters high, landing with stones shattering into fragments. Just using their eyes to emit that kind of energy."

Jessica shook her head. "If that's the kind of villain, how would you handle it?"

"Demons don't come from the hell beneath our feet but descend from the sky."

Kent Farm.

Martha had just finished cleaning the house when her husband and Eric and Clark entered the living room.

"The recent heat is bizarre. Bouncing around on the tractor for half an hour makes you sweat all over. Maybe I should learn from the Australians and give myself a 'cooling vacation.'"

Jonathan, who had just come in, complained to Martha.

"Maybe you need some iced lemonade to beat the summer heat. By the way, Jonathan, Australians celebrate Christmas in the summer. You wouldn't want to be like them," Martha said with a smile, raising a glass of iced lemonade.

But suddenly, she felt dizzy, and her vision went dark.

"Ugh!"

She felt weak all over, losing all her strength.

With a crash, the glass fell to the ground and shattered.

The glass shattered into pieces, and the yellow lemonade spilled everywhere.

She then collapsed forward.

She fell right into the shattered glass.

Seeing his wife fall, Jonathan was completely stunned, standing motionless.

Eric and Clark immediately reacted, using their super speed to move to their mother's side in an instant.

Eric was faster than Clark and caught their mother before she fell onto the broken glass, preventing her from getting hurt.

Seeing Eric catch Martha, Jonathan snapped out of it and quickly walked over, taking Martha from Eric's arms.

Pushing the hair from her forehead, Jonathan quickly checked on his wife.

"Eric, Clark, call an ambulance!"
