Chapter 24 - Shallow waters [Part-1]

[Rank numbers 12, 13, and 14 stood at the edge of the training pool, each preparing for the underwater test. The pool was vast and deep, designed to test their swimming speed, breath-holding capacity, and overall endurance.]

[Instructor 6]: "Alright, cadets, you know the drill. Today's challenge is all about endurance and speed. Let's see who can hold their breath the longest and who can swim the fastest."

[Lucas, Rank 12]: (stretching) "This is going to be fun. I've been looking forward to this all week."

[Elena, Rank 13]: (smirking) "Don't get too cocky, Lucas. I've been practising my breath-holding. Think you can beat me?"

[Isaac, Rank 14]: (grinning) "You two focus on holding your breath. I'll take the speed record."

[The three cadets dove into the water, the cool rush invigorating them as they swam to the starting line. Instructor 6 stood at the edge, stopwatch in hand, ready to monitor their progress.]

[Instructor 6]: "On my mark... Get set... Go!"

[The stopwatch clicked, and they launched themselves underwater, each with a different strategy. Lucas focused on steady, rhythmic strokes. Elena, with her calm demeanour, went straight into a meditative state, conserving oxygen. Isaac, the speedster, powered through with rapid, strong kicks.]

[Lucas]: (thinking) "Just keep it steady. Don't rush. Focus on endurance."

[Elena]: (thinking) "Calm and steady. Breathe slowly. Conserve oxygen."

[Isaac]: (thinking) "Speed is the key. Don't slow down."

[As the seconds ticked by, Instructor 6 observed their progress. Lucas maintained a consistent pace, while Elena's slow, deliberate movements indicated she was conserving her breath. On the other hand, Isaac was a blur, covering distance rapidly.]

[Instructor 6]: (calling out) "Good form, Lucas! Keep it steady! Elena, excellent breath control! Isaac, you're on fire with that speed!"

[The cadets pushed themselves, each determined to excel. The water resistance challenged their muscles, but their training and determination drove them forward.

After a minute, Instructor 6 checked the stopwatch. "Alright, let's see where we stand. Lucas, you maintained a steady pace. Elena, impressive breath-holding. Isaac, your speed is unmatched."They surfaced, gasping for air but smiling.]

[Lucas]: (panting) "Man, that was tough. Elena, how long did you hold your breath?"

[Elena]: (catching her breath) "A minute and a half. I've been practising the meditation techniques Instructor 5 taught us."

[Isaac]: (grinning) "Well, I managed to swim the entire length in under 30 seconds. Beat that!"

[Lucas]: (laughing) "Alright, alright, you win on speed. But let's see you hold your breath as long as Elena."

[Elena]: (smirking) "You guys are just jealous of my lung capacity."

[They laughed as Instructor 6 approached, nodding in approval.]

[Instructor 6]: "Great job, all of you. Lucas, your steady pace is perfect for endurance. Elena, your breath control is remarkable. Isaac, your speed is impressive. Now, let's do another round. This time, Lucas and Isaac focus on breath-holding. Elena, let's see your speed."

[They nodded, ready for the next challenge. As they prepared, they exchanged light-hearted banter.]

[Isaac]: "Hey, Elena, you think you can keep up with me?"

[Elena]: (grinning) "Watch and learn speedster."

[Lucas]: "Let's see if I can hold my breath longer than both of you this time."

[Instructor 6]: "Alright, cadets, on my mark... Get set... Go!"

[They dove again, each pushing their limits. Lucas focused on steady, deep breaths before submerging, determined to outlast his friends. Elena, now focusing on speed, propelled herself forward with powerful strokes. Isaac slowed his pace, concentrating on conserving oxygen.]

[Lucas]: (thinking) "Hold it... Hold it... Don't let up."

[Elena]: (thinking) "Fast and strong. Don't slow down."

[Isaac]: (thinking) "Slow and steady. Conserve energy."

[Instructor 6 watched with keen interest, noting their improvements and techniques. As the seconds ticked by, the tension grew. Finally, they surfaced again, each gasping for air.]

[Lucas]: (gasping) "How... did I do?"

[Instructor 6]: (checking the stopwatch) "Lucas, you held your breath for nearly two minutes. Well done. Elena, you completed the length in 25 seconds. Impressive. Isaac, you managed to hold your breath for a minute and a half. Great improvement."

[They exchanged smiles and high-fives, proud of their achievements.]

[Elena]: (grinning) "Looks like we're all getting better. Maybe we should form an underwater team."

[Isaac]: (laughing) "I'd join. But only if we get to race."

[Lucas]: "Deal. But let's keep pushing each other. We can always improve."

[Instructor 6]: (nodding) "That's the spirit. Keep challenging yourselves and each other. Now, let's take a break and then we'll do some endurance swimming."

[As they climbed out of the pool, they continued their friendly banter, the competition only strengthening their bond. The underwater test pushed their limits and reinforced the importance of teamwork and mutual support.]

Meanwhile

[Rank numbers 15 and 17, Avery and Harper stood on the edge of the training pool, ready for a different challenge. Unlike the previous test, this one focused on underwater combat—a crucial skill for their training.]

[Instructor 7]: "Alright, cadets, today's challenge is underwater combat. Remember, it's not just about strength, but also about agility and strategy. The goal is to disarm your opponent and gain the upper hand. Ready?"

[Avery, Rank 15]: (nodding) "Ready."

[Harper, Rank 17]: (smirking) "Let's do this."

[They both dove into the water, the incredible rush engulfing them as they swam to the pool's centre. The underwater environment added a layer of difficulty, requiring them to adapt their movements and strategies.]

[Instructor 7]: "Begin!"

[Avery and Harper squared off, assessing the other's stance and movements. Harper made the first move, lunging forward with a quick jab. Avery dodged, her movements fluid and graceful.]

[Avery]: (thinking) "Stay calm. Use the water to your advantage."

[Harper followed up with a series of quick punches, but Avery parried them, using the water's resistance to slow Harper's attacks.]

[Harper]: (thinking) "She's fast. Need to change tactics."

[Harper feigned a left hook and then swept low, aiming to knock Avery off balance. Avery anticipated the move, countering with a swift kick that sent Harper back.]

[Avery]: "Nice try, Harper, but you'll need to do better."

[Harper regained his balance and came at Avery again, using broader, more forceful attacks. Avery weaved through his strikes, her agility giving her the upper hand. She saw an opening and lunged forward, locking Harper in a hold.]

[Harper]: (struggling) "Not bad... but not good enough."

[Harper twisted, breaking free from Avery's hold and countering with a powerful elbow strike. Avery blocked it, using the momentum to spin and land a kick to Harper's side.]

[Instructor 7]: "Good form, Avery! Keep it up!"

[Avery pressed her advantage, her movements a blur of precision and power. Harper struggled to keep up, and his attacks became more desperate. Avery saw her chance and executed a flawless disarm, twisting Harper's wrist and taking his weapon.]

[Avery]: "Looks like I win, Harper."

[Harper, panting and out of breath, nodded in acknowledgement.]

[Harper]: (grinning) "You got me this time, Avery. Well done."

They surfaced, gasping for air but with smiles on their faces. Instructor 7 approached, nodding in approval.

[Instructor 7]: "Excellent work, both of you. Avery, your agility and strategy were spot on. Harper, you showed great strength and adaptability. Remember, underwater combat requires both precision and patience."

[Avery]: (smiling) "Thanks, Instructor. Harper, you put up a great fight."

[Harper]: "Yeah, I'll get you next time. You wait."

[Instructor 7]: "Alright, take a break, and then we'll switch partners for the next round. Keep pushing yourselves and learning from each other."

[As they climbed out of the pool, they exchanged light-hearted banter, their competitive spirits undiminished. The underwater combat training tested their skills and strengthened their resolve to improve and support each other.]

[Avery]: "So, Harper, any tips for next time?"

[Harper]: (laughing) "Maybe. But you'll have to figure most of it out on your own. That's the fun part."

[Avery]: "Challenge accepted."

[Instructor 7]: "Good. Now, rest up. The next session starts in ten minutes."
