Chapter 18 - Two Main Problems

Raze had been hunting for the past few hours.

He wasn't sure how much time had passed, but it was getting pretty late, and he was also getting tired, so he decided to take refuge in a pretty tall tree.

For the past few hours, he hadn't been slacking off and instead hunting.

"Not bad," Raze muttered in satisfaction.

He had worked really hard over the past few hours, doing nothing but hunting.

Around 16 monsters or so had been killed by him till now on this floor.

Out of which, 7 dropped beast shards, which he invested in his strength and agility.

In all his hunts, Raze always made sure to never directly engage with any monster and made sure to kill them in one clean shot to reduce the chance of it retaliating.

Just like he had guessed, he was able to easily use the bow, just like he had used the gun earlier, all thanks to his class.

This was very good for him, as he finally had a way to properly fight without worrying about running out of ammo or mana or risking his life in close range.

The only problem was that his arrows weren't that strong, and unless he hit the weak and vulnerable spot of the beast, it would be unable to pierce and deal actual damage.

Not to mention, while the number of his arrows was greater than his bullets, they were still very limited, and he needed to be extremely careful in how he used them.

He was basically treating his limited supply of arrows like gold, as his very life depended on them.

And yet, despite this, he had lost four whole arrows for various reasons, such as testing or arrows breaking for one reason or another.

Every time Raze lost an arrow, he felt the chances of him surviving slimming.

One thing was clear, and that was that he needed way more arrows or some other source of ammunition if he wanted to use them effectively without needing to worry about running out.

Of course, that was easier said than done, as he had no idea where to get more arrows.

The only lead he had was hopefully finding the goblin settlement, but that was obviously not going to be easy.

Now, this led to his second problem, which was his innate rune, or rather, the subeffect that it had.

For convenience sake, Raze had decided to name them gates.

Initially, he was extremely excited about it and the power it allowed him to output.

There was one thing he failed to consider, and that was the sheer amount of mana it required to use.

While the mana needed to open the gates themselves wasn't a problem, the mana needed to actually fire projectiles using it very much was.

In just a single use, he had almost used up all his mana.

Of course, this was probably due to his lack of proper control, which led him to waste a lot of mana and maybe even use more mana than needed, which caused his knife to get destroyed after just a single use.

Which meant he only had one more knife left to use for his gate.

Raze had tried to use his gates with the arrows that he had, but the arrows were apparently too badly made and got destroyed mid-air due to being unable to handle the pressure from the gates.

Maybe it could be useful in close range, but at that point he may as well just use his spear.

Unfortunately, for him, this wasn't where his problems ended.

Apparently, after he fired a weapon through his gate, he had zero control over its trajectory, and it could only go straight.

This was obviously a massive flaw and made his weapons easier to dodge; thankfully, the speed of the attack at least subsided this weakness a little bit.

But he still wasn't a fan of it and was definitely on the lookout for anything that would allow him to control his projectiles, even if just a little bit.

Sadly, there wasn't anything he could do about it at the moment.

And as if all this wasn't bad enough, there was another problem: he could only open one gate at a time.

This wasn't because of some sort of mental or mana strain, but simply because it just didn't work.

He had tried for a long time to open a second gate, only to be met with disappointment each time.

From what he understood, these gates were a lot more limited than he initially expected, and while he wanted to open multiple gates and just spam projectile attacks in practice, it wasn't really possible.

At least for the current him.

It might be possible in the future, but for that, he needed to actually survive long enough, which was looking more and more tough as time went on.

So he needed to be really careful with his gates and treat them as sort of his trump card.

Ultimately, the main thing he had learned today was that even though his class and innate rune made it out to be like he was going to be some sort of long-range fighter, in practice he just didn't have the means or resources to support such a fighting style.

Which meant it was only a matter of time until he needed to fight up close with his spear.

This was the reason why he had invested in his strength and agility today to prepare for this upcoming close range fight.

However, all of this was for tomorrow; he was too tired right now, and since he was going to be risking his life, he might as well do it once in as good of a condition as possible.

A lot had happened today, and while he had somewhat come to terms with all of it, his mind and body still needed rest.

'Ah, right before I forget, I haven't eaten or drank anything ever since I came into this world, but, meh, I'll figure it out tomorrow'

'Hopefully I don't get killed in my sleep tonight'

With that thought, Raze entered the sweet world of dreams.
