Seo-Yun led Jin through the dense, twisted forest, explaining the basics of survival in the dungeon world. The air was thick with tension, each shadow potentially hiding a lethal predator. Jin's mind raced to keep up with her rapid instructions on identifying edible plants, constructing basic shelters, and, most importantly, how to fight.
"Why me?" Jin asked, still grappling with his sudden displacement. "Why am I here?"
Seo-Yun glanced at him, her expression unreadable. "The dungeons choose who they take. Sometimes it's random, sometimes it's not. But everyone who ends up here has to fight to survive."
Jin nodded, determination hardening within him. He had been given a second chance, and he wasn't going to waste it. His thoughts wandered back to Seoul, the city that had chewed him up and spit him out. He thought of his small, dingy apartment, the endless rejection emails, and the cold stares of former colleagues who had moved on. Here, at least, he had a chance to redefine himself.
They came to a clearing where Seo-Yun halted abruptly, raising a hand to signal Jin to stop. The clearing was eerily quiet, the usual hum of dungeon creatures conspicuously absent. Jin's heart pounded in his chest as he scanned the area.
"There's something nearby," Seo-Yun whispered, drawing her blade. The weapon glowed with a faint, otherworldly light. "Stay close and be ready."
Before Jin could respond, a rustling in the underbrush snapped him to attention. A monstrous figure emerged—a snarling beast, its eyes glowing with malice and hunger. It was unlike anything Jin had ever seen: part wolf, part reptile, with scales that shimmered menacingly in the dim light.
Seo-Yun moved with practiced grace, her blade slicing through the air with lethal precision. She lunged at the creature, her movements fluid and deadly. Jin watched in awe, momentarily frozen by the sheer ferocity of the battle. Seo-Yun was a whirlwind of steel and determination, and the beast seemed almost outmatched. Almost.
The creature lashed out, its claws grazing Seo-Yun's arm, drawing blood. Jin's paralysis broke at the sight. Adrenaline surged through him as he fumbled for a weapon—a sturdy branch lying nearby. He gripped it tightly, stepping into the fray with more desperation than skill.
Jin swung the branch with all his might, connecting with the beast's head. The creature recoiled, and Jin seized the moment to strike again, this time aiming for its exposed flank. The impact sent a shockwave through his arms, but the beast faltered, its growls turning into pained whimpers.
Seo-Yun took advantage of the distraction, delivering a final, decisive blow that severed the beast's head. It collapsed with a heavy thud, the forest returning to its unsettling silence.
Panting, Jin wiped sweat from his brow, his hands trembling. His heart raced, a mix of fear and exhilaration coursing through his veins.
"Not bad for your first fight," Seo-Yun said, a hint of a smile on her lips despite the blood dripping from her wound. "But you've got a long way to go."
Jin looked at the fallen beast, then at Seo-Yun, and finally down at his own shaking hands. Despite the terror, despite the blood and the danger, he felt something he hadn't felt in a long time: a sense of accomplishment. For the first time, he believed he might just have what it takes to conquer this world—and maybe even save his own.
As they continued their journey through the dungeon world, Jin knew one thing for certain: he would fight. He would survive. And he would rise.
