Even Ember has noticed the way Tristan looks at me, and that's why I can't seem to let this go. Hope—that insidious little flicker—is what keeps me hanging on. I think something could happen between us, that there's a chance for us.
Maybe I've been fooling myself, but seeing Ember with Kellan hasn't helped. Watching them together, so utterly consumed by one another, made me realize just how much I want someone too. Someone to hold me, to look at me the way Kellan looks at Ember—as if the moon would stop shining without her. And that's where Tristan comes in.
I try to play it cool, to act nonchalant, as if none of it affects me. But every time he avoids my touch or my advances, every time he outright rejects me, it feels like a knife twisting in my chest. My pride takes the hit first, sure, but it's my heart that bears the brunt of it.
