Surprise, then confusion flashed through Daemon's eyes, before he asked, incomprehension clear in his calm voice:
"Why are you apologizing?"
The concern in his voice was unmistakable, only adding another pike to Evelyn's heart.
She shook her head, gave Daemon a small smile, before she turned to look at the road through the windshield, her fingers still caressing the cracked screen of her phone.
She was sorry for what she did the night he saved her. She was sorry for leaving his heart wounded, for being inconsiderate, for not thinking that maybe, it was not just her who could feel pain.
Daemon gave her a look, then lowered his head to the phone she was holding, before looking back at the road without any more word.
The trip continued in silence, one that seemed necessary for the introspection of the occupants of the SUV.
