The SUV slowed down, before pulling over. Silence reigned in the car for a moment longer, before Evelyn spoke, her voice mirroring in its own way the complexity in her eyes:
"Why did you come?"
Why did he come today? Why didn't he stay away?
Daemon turned to look at the woman who had been in his heart since he had been 17 or something like that. Almost ten years, but he was not tired of her. Rather, he wanted to keep feeling her presence, her warmth for the many years to come.
His silence, compounded with the slight softness uncharacteristic of his temperament displayed in his eyes, made Evelyn's heart skip a beat. Her eyes almost turned moist, but not because of how moved she was, reading his love for her in his eyes, but because how that love was only tearing her apart even more.
"I can't do what you are asking of me, Evelyn."
The calm tone brought Evelyn's mind back, and she did not know what to feel at the answer.
"But–"
