Chapter 4 - Second Test

The entire field had been equipped with advanced technology that allowed it to switch between two locations.

As the transformation began, the ground vibrated softly, and a series of panels embedded beneath the surface activated. With a low rumble, a rectangular area—approximately 200 feet by 100 feet—emerged from the ground. The structure was modern, featuring a high ceiling. Inside, about twenty training bots wielding wooden swords stood under bright overhead lights.

All the students were stunned. The field had transformed into a training ground within minutes."Welcome to the Second Test Ground. For your next test, each student is required to fight against these bots," Tom announced, typing on the tablet in his hand. The bots powered up immediately.

"I've set them to a grade 1 fighter, so I assume most of you will defeat them with ease. If not, you'll be assigned to the building called 'Weak People with No Abilities Only' (WPNAO Building). It's right beside the academy, in case you want to check it out. I will now begin calling names."

"Cole Hart!" Cole stepped forward, a male student, and was handed a wooden sword. "Your test begins now."

The bot raised its wooden sword high and dashed toward him. Cole swiftly appeared behind the bot and slashed it. The bot turned around, preparing to strike Cole, who seemed to struggle slightly with his ability.

"Shadow ability? Cool, but I'm not dazed,"  Michael thought.

The shadow ability was considered strong by some, while others viewed it as weak due to its vulnerabilities. Its full potential shone in darkness. This ability allowed individuals to manipulate and control shadows, often using them for stealth, concealment, or offensive tactics. Users could blend into darkness, move silently, or even create constructs from shadows. They could travel through shadows, evade detection, or instill fear by manifesting dark figures. Those with the shadow ability were often skilled in sword fighting.

Cole quickly blocked the bot's attack with his wooden sword, staggering backward. He leaped toward the bot and managed to slash its neck region. His agility was impressive. The bot ceased its attacks immediately.

"Great job! You passed the test. Please wait over there; you will be grouped into a team before entering the academy," Tom said, gesturing to the right side.

"So we aren't inside the academy yet? Where are we?" Michael wondered. Blake glanced at him, noticing the confusion on his face.

"This usually happens in most academies. They conduct the tests outside," Blake explained, walking over to Kaylee for a handshake.

Michael knew Blake wanted to copy her ability. Blake extended his hand with a smile, but Kaylee stared at it for a moment.

"I don't accept handshakes. Thank you for the offer," she replied, ignoring him. The other students looked at Blake strangely, especially the boys, who seemed furious at him for approaching her. Kaylee had quickly become their crush.

Blake felt as if he had been thrown into the drain. Michael walked over and placed a hand on Blake's shoulder. "That was a smooth rejection, Cold. Maybe it's because of her ability," he teased, looking at Blake, who appeared lost in thought.

"Well, snap out of it and let's finish the test quickly," Michael declared, playfully hitting Blake on the head. The two of them had become quite close within the few minutes they had known one another.

Blake jolted back to reality. "What was that for? Ouch, that hurts!"Michael had initially planned to hit someone else on the head. Ever since Tom had slammed his own head, he felt an urge to pass on the same treatment, as if a contagious slap virus had infected him.

Tom called the next person forward. "Michael Turner." He looked at Michael with a mischievous smile as he walked forward. "My mind keeps telling me that you are a special one, Michael," Tom thought.
