Paul had to spend CP on the items to heat and pour the heated sand, and while they were not very expensive, he did not want to waste them.
Due to the fact that none of the people he had killed were worth much CP, the cost of the items was not even recuperated despite him getting all of the credit for the kills since he was alone.
Paul was in the dark about the number of friendly players inside the fort. He didn't know if they were bravely defending it or if they had fled at the sight of the enemy force. The situation was a potential goldmine for CP, but most players were too caught up in the fight for survival to see it.
In Paul's situation, dying in an embarrassing situation would not be amazing for any reputation he created. It did not mean he was overly worried about dying at all.
