Chapter 20 - G-FAITH Council members

Date: October 25, 2024

Time: 8:30 AM

Location: Nasi Lemak Cafe', Mutiara Damansara,

 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The modest café near Johan's studio in Mutiara Damansara was a haven of calm amidst the bustling city. The morning sun filtered through the windows, casting a warm glow over the small group gathered around a wooden table. Johan, Ali, and Michael were seated, their breakfast laid out before them. Johan had ordered a Malaysian delicacy—Nasi Lemak with a spicy and crunchy fried drumstick—hoping to introduce Michael to the flavors of Malaysia.

"Try this," Johan said, offering Michael a plate. "Nasi Lemak. It's a Malaysian staple."

Michael took a bite, his eyes widening in appreciation. "This is fantastic, Johan. Thanks for the recommendation."

As they ate, the conversation shifted to the task at hand—preparing the email recipients for their upcoming initiative.

Johan began, "We need to establish a solid network of representatives across different continents. I've met several people who could be key in this effort."

Ali nodded, adding, "We should establish continent representatives to ensure broad coverage and influence."

Michael agreed. "Absolutely. For Southeast Asia, you'll be the representative, Johan. Given your role as the founder, it makes sense."

Johan nodded. "Michael, you can handle Africa, based in South Africa. Habib, your journalist friend, can cover the Middle East from Dubai. Dr. Emily can represent the EU from London."

They all nodded in agreement, but the discussion turned to the remaining regions.

"We still need someone for India," Johan said, thinking aloud. "Rajiv Mehta can take that role."

"That leaves us with the USA, South America, China, and Russia," Michael noted, scrolling through his mobile device. After a moment, he looked up. "For South America, I recommend Maria Torres from La Paz, Bolivia. She's been doing incredible investigative work there."

"Perfect," Johan said. "We'll figure out representatives for the USA, China, and Russia later."

Their conversation then turned to setting up the organizational structure of their new NGO.

Ali suggested, "Let's keep it simple. We need a Policy Council to draft and pass our policies of action, an Administrative Council to oversee operations, a Funding Council, and an Advocacy Council for all on-the-ground action."

Johan nodded, considering. "I also think we need a dedicated Research Team. This work is too important to not have focused research driving our actions."

Michael agreed. "Absolutely. So, we'll include a Research Council. Ali, how about you act as the NGO's Permanent Secretary?"

Ali smiled. "I can do that."

Johan continued, "Michael, I'd like you to head the Advocacy Council. Your experience in journalism and activism makes you perfect for the role."

Michael nodded. "I'm in."

"And Dr. Emily will be responsible for research," Johan added. "Her expertise will be invaluable."

They all agreed, the structure starting to take shape. As they finished their breakfast, the conversation flowed easily, fueled by the shared sense of purpose and the delicious Nasi Lemak.

Michael then pulled out his phone and began adding Maria Torres to their WhatsApp group. Johan followed suit, adding the other proposed council heads.

"Let's set up a Zoom meeting with everyone," Ali suggested.

Michael agreed. "Good idea. We need to get everyone on the same page as soon as possible."

Johan started typing a message in the WhatsApp group:

"Welcome everyone to the new setup of G-FAITH - Global Foundation for AI Transparency for Humanity. An NGO actively engaged in ensuring AI advancement fully complies to safeguard humanity. I am Johan Lim, a senior computer engineer at Petronas and acting as the NGO founder."

Johan looked at his two friends and gestured for them to introduce themselves.

Ali took the lead. "Hi, everyone. I'm Ali, serving as the Permanent Secretary for G-FAITH. Looking forward to working with all of you."

Michael followed, "Hello, I'm Michael, based in South Africa. I'll be heading the Advocacy Council. Excited to join forces with such a dedicated team."

As the introductions continued, the group felt a surge of unity and purpose. The foundation of their organization was now set, and the real work was about to begin. They knew the challenges ahead were immense, but with their combined expertise and shared commitment, they were ready to tackle the ethical dilemmas of AI and ensure its advancement served humanity's best interests.

Johan continued the WhatsApp text: "I am advancing for a Zoom meeting. Please decide the date and time that works best for everyone."

He hit send and then waved for the bill. The trio stood up, feeling the weight of their mission but also the excitement of the journey ahead.

Leaving the cozy café behind, they walked through the bustling streets of Mutiara Damansara towards Johan's suite. The morning air was fresh, filled with the promise of new beginnings. Johan felt a deep sense of camaraderie with Ali and Michael, knowing that together, they could make a real difference in the world.
