Chapter 20 - Alpha makes soup

The sun had barely risen over the horizon when Ethan's eyes fluttered open.

He found himself in an unfamiliar room, lying on a soft bed. For a moment, panic gripped him as he tried to remember where he was and how he'd gotten there.

"Master is awake!"

Alpha's cheerful voice cut through his confusion. She bounded into view, her tail wagging excitedly behind her. "Alpha was so worried! Master slept for three whole days!".

Ethan blinked, trying to process this information. "Three days?" he croaked, his voice hoarse from disuse.

Alpha nodded vigorously. "Alpha took care of Master the whole time! Alpha made sure Master was comfortable and safe."

As Ethan's mind cleared, the memories came flooding back.

The mansion, the battles, his power unleashing beyond anything he'd experienced before. He groaned, feeling the toll it had taken on his body.

"Where are we, Alpha?" he asked, slowly sitting up.

"Alpha found a nice abandoned cottage in the forest," she replied proudly. "It's far away from bad people. Alpha made sure!"

Ethan couldn't help but smile at her enthusiasm. "Good job, Alpha. You did well."

Alpha's eyes lit up at the praise, her tail wagging even faster. "Does Master want breakfast? Alpha can hunt for fresh meat!"

Before Ethan could respond, his stomach growled loudly. Alpha giggled, taking that as an answer.

"Alpha will be right back! Master should rest more."

As Alpha dashed out of the cottage, Ethan took stock of his condition. His body ached all over, but it was his eyes that concerned him most. He could feel something off about them, a strange tingling sensation that came and went.

Closing his eyes, Ethan tried to activate his demonic sight. Pain lanced through his head, causing him to wince. It seemed his powers were still recovering from the strain he'd put them under.

"I overdid it," he muttered to himself. "I need to be more careful in the future."

Deciding to take Alpha's advice, Ethan lay back down and began to meditate. He focused on his breathing, allowing his mind to calm and his magical energy to flow freely through his body.

Time passed, and Ethan found himself drifting into a trance-like state. He could feel his power, diminished but slowly recovering. In his mind's eye, he saw his magic circuits, some strained and damaged from overuse.

Carefully, he began the process of repair. It was delicate work, requiring intense concentration. So focused was he on this internal cultivation that he didn't notice Alpha's return until she was right beside him.

"Master? Is Master okay?" Alpha's worried voice broke through his meditation.

Ethan's eyes snapped open, and for a brief moment, they flashed with demonic energy. The sudden activation sent a jolt of pain through his head.

"Argh!" he groaned, clutching his temples.

Alpha yelped in surprise, nearly dropping the rabbits she'd caught. "Master! Alpha is sorry, Alpha didn't mean to startle you!"

Ethan waved off her apologies, taking deep breaths to manage the pain. "It's alright, Alpha. I'm fine. Just... still recovering."

Alpha's ears drooped. "Alpha should have been more careful. Alpha will make it up to Master!"

Before Ethan could stop her, Alpha had dashed to the small kitchen area of the cottage. The sounds of pots clanging and water splashing filled the air, punctuated by Alpha's determined muttering.

"Alpha will make the best soup for Master! It will help Master heal faster!"

Ethan couldn't help but chuckle at her enthusiasm, even as he winced at particularly loud clangs. "Alpha, you don't have to-"

"Alpha wants to!" she interrupted, her voice filled with determination. "Master always takes care of Alpha. Now it's Alpha's turn to take care of Master!"

Recognizing the futility of arguing, Ethan settled back and resumed his meditation. The sounds of Alpha's cooking efforts provided an oddly comforting background noise.

An hour later, Alpha proudly presented a bowl of steaming soup to Ethan. "Ta-da! Alpha's super-healing soup for Master!"

Ethan eyed the concoction warily. The broth was an odd greenish color, with chunks of meat floating alongside... were those tree bark and random leaves?

"Um, Alpha? What exactly is in this soup?"

Alpha beamed. "Rabbit meat for strength, special herbs Alpha found in the forest for healing, and bark from the magic tree for extra power! Alpha made sure to add lots of everything to make Master better faster!"

Ethan's stomach turned at the thought of eating tree bark, but the hopeful look on Alpha's face made it impossible to refuse. Steeling himself, he took a spoonful of the soup and put it in his mouth.

To his surprise, it wasn't nearly as bad as he'd feared. The taste was unusual, certainly, but not unpleasant. And he could feel a warmth spreading through his body as he swallowed.

"It's... actually pretty good, Alpha," he said, genuinely impressed. "Thank you."

Alpha's entire being seemed to light up at the praise. "Alpha is so happy Master likes it! Alpha will make more every day until Master is all better!"

As Ethan continued to eat the soup, he could feel his strength returning bit by bit. Whether it was the soup's special ingredients or simply the nourishment his body desperately needed, he couldn't say. But he was grateful nonetheless.

"Alpha," he said between spoonfuls, "while I was... out, did you notice anything strange? Any signs we were followed?"

Alpha shook her head. "Alpha was very careful! Alpha made sure to cover our tracks and take many twists and turns. No bad people followed us!"

Ethan nodded, relieved. "Good work. We should be safe here for a while, then. It'll give us time to recover and plan our next move."

As if on cue, Ethan's eyes flashed again, causing him to wince. Alpha was at his side in an instant, her face etched with concern.

"Master's eyes are still hurting? Maybe Alpha should find more magic bark..."

"No, no," Ethan said quickly, not eager for another bark-filled meal. "I just need time to heal. And to practice controlling my power better."

Alpha's ears perked up. "Oh! Alpha can help with that! Alpha is very good at playing catch. We can practice with Master's magic!"

The mental image of Alpha chasing magical bolts like a dog after a stick was so absurd that Ethan couldn't help but laugh. The action sent another spike of pain through his head, but he found he didn't mind so much.

"Maybe when I'm feeling a bit better," he said, patting Alpha on the head. She leaned into the touch, a contented purr rumbling in her chest.

As the day wore on, Ethan alternated between rest, meditation, and gentle exercises to rebuild his strength. Alpha was a constant presence, always ready to help or offer encouragement.

By evening, Ethan felt strong enough to step outside the cottage. The forest around them was peaceful, the air filled with the sounds of birds and the rustle of leaves in the breeze.

"It's beautiful here," Ethan murmured, taking in the scenery.

Alpha nodded enthusiastically. "Alpha knew Master would like it! It reminds Alpha of home."

A pang of guilt shot through Ethan at those words. In all the chaos, he'd nearly forgotten that Alpha had been torn from her own world.

"Alpha," he said softly, "do you miss your home?"

Alpha tilted her head, considering the question. "Sometimes," she admitted. "But Alpha is happy here with Master. Master is Alpha's home now!"

The simple sincerity of her words touched Ethan deeply. He reached out and scratched behind her ears, earning another contented purr.

"I'm glad you're here too, Alpha," he said. "I couldn't have made it this far without you."

As they watched the sun set together, Ethan's mind turned to the challenges that lay ahead. There were still so many unanswered questions. Who was behind the demon trafficking operation? What were they planning? And how deep did this conspiracy go?

But for now, in this peaceful moment with Alpha by his side, those concerns seemed distant.

They had escaped, they were safe, and they were growing stronger. Whatever came next, they would face it together.

As the first stars began to twinkle in the darkening sky, Ethan made a silent promise. He would master his powers, uncover the truth behind the conspiracy, and most importantly, he would protect Alpha. No matter what it took.
