Chapter 3 - Boring underworld

As Penny lay lost in thought, a soft knock echoed through her crystalline chamber. She quickly wiped away her tears and composed herself before calling out, "Come in."

The door creaked open, revealing a slender figure cloaked in shadows. "Penny, are you alright?" a voice asked, filled with concern.

Penny recognized the voice instantly. It belonged to her closest friend and confidant, a fellow white witch named Luna. "I'm fine, Luna," Penny replied, forcing a smile. "Just lost in thought."

Luna stepped further into the room, her silver eyes scanning Penny's face with understanding. "You've been distant lately, Penny. Is something troubling you?"

Penny hesitated, debating whether to confide in Luna. But ultimately, she knew she couldn't keep secrets from her dearest friend any longer. "I met someone today," she began slowly, her voice barely above a whisper.

Luna's eyes widened with curiosity. "Who? And what happened?"

Penny recounted her encounter with Milo and his brothers, Elliot and Eli, detailing how she had helped them in the forest and promised to meet them again. As she spoke, Luna listened intently, her expression a mixture of fascination and concern.

"You promised to meet them again?" Luna echoed, her voice tinged with worry. "Penny, you know the dangers of revealing yourself to humans. Lord Magnus would never allow it."

Penny nodded solemnly, fully aware of the consequences of her actions. "I know, Luna. But there's something about Milo and his brothers...they're different. I feel a connection to them, like I've known them my whole life."

Luna sighed, running a hand through her long, silver hair. "I understand, Penny. But you must be cautious. The world outside our cave is filled with dangers, especially for creatures like us."

Penny nodded, her resolve strengthening. "I'll be careful, Luna. I promise."

Just then, a faint sound echoed through the chamber, like the distant rumble of thunder. Penny and Luna exchanged a puzzled glance, both sensing that something was amiss.

"What was that?" Luna asked, her voice tense with apprehension.

Before Penny could reply, the ground beneath them began to shake violently, causing the crystals to tremble and shatter. Luna stumbled, grasping onto Penny for support as the room filled with chaos.

"We need to get out of here!" Penny exclaimed, her heart pounding with fear.

But before they could make their escape, the chamber door burst open, revealing Lord Magnus flanked by his guards. His eyes blazed with fury as he surveyed the scene before him.

"Penny," he thundered, his voice echoing through the chamber like a clap of thunder. "What have you done?"

Penny swallowed hard, her mind racing as she struggled to find an explanation. But deep down, she knew that her secret had been revealed, and the consequences would be dire.

As Lord Magnus advanced towards her, his expression dark and foreboding, Penny braced herself for the inevitable punishment that awaited her. But amidst the chaos and uncertainty, one thing remained clear - her bond with Milo and his brothers had ignited a spark of hope within her heart, a glimmer of light in the darkness that surrounded them all. And no matter what trials lay ahead, Penny was determined to protect that hope, no matter the cost.

As Lord Magnus's gaze bore down on her, Penny stood her ground, her resolve unwavering despite the fear coursing through her veins. Luna moved closer, a silent show of support in the face of impending danger.

"Father, please," Penny began, her voice steady despite the turmoil within her. "I can explain."

Lord Magnus's expression softened slightly, but the storm in his eyes remained. "Explain, then," he demanded, his tone commanding obedience.

Penny took a deep breath, steeling herself for the words she knew would seal her fate. "I met humans in the forest today," she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. "I helped them."

Silence filled the chamber as Lord Magnus processed her words, his features a mask of unreadable emotion. Luna glanced at Penny, her silver eyes filled with concern, but Penny held her ground, refusing to back down.

Finally, Lord Magnus spoke, his voice cold and unforgiving. "You know the rules, Penny. Interacting with humans is forbidden. You almost endangered us all," he paused for a moment, "an intruder almost got into our world because of your curiosity."

Penny's heart sank as the weight of his words washed over her. She had known the risks, yet she had allowed her curiosity and compassion to cloud her judgment. Now, she faced the consequences of her actions, and there was no turning back.

"I'm sorry, Father," Penny whispered, her voice choked with emotion. "I didn't mean to cause harm. I just wanted to help."

Lord Magnus's expression softened slightly, a flicker of remorse in his eyes. "I know, Penny," he said, his voice gentler now. "But the safety of our kind must always come first. You understand that, don't you?"

Penny nodded, her throat tight with suppressed tears. She had always been taught to prioritize the well-being of their community above all else, yet she couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to her connection with Milo and his brothers than met the eye.

As Lord Magnus turned to leave, his guards following closely behind, Penny felt a surge of determination wash over her. She may have made a mistake, but she refused to let fear and guilt consume her. She would find a way to make things right, no matter the cost.

Turning to Luna, Penny met her friend's gaze with determination.

"Why do I get that feeling that this isn't the end of your adventure?" Luna asked with the 'I don't trust you' expression on her face.

"Haha! Because it isn't," Penny replied with exciting tingling in her tummy.

"I warned you," Luna scoffed at her before exiting the room.

"Aren't you TIRED OF THE SAME OLD BORING UNDERWORLD!?" Penny yelled after her. She just couldn't get why people are so engrossed with staying safe when there's a whole new excitement waiting outside the cave for them or her...if they wanna go.

"I'm just getting started," she smiled to herself as she lay down to sleep.
