Chapter 5 - Chapter 5

Sophia's hands trembled as she stared at the stack of papers before her. The official documents detailing the bankruptcy proceedings of Felx Enterprises stared back at her, each line a nail in the coffin of the life she had once known.

"This can't be happening," she muttered, her voice barely above a whisper. She had poured her heart and soul into that company, watched it grow from her family's small startup into a global powerhouse. And now, it was all crumbling before her eyes.

A soft knock on the door pulled her from her thoughts. "Ms. Felix?" Her assistant, Emma, stood in the doorway, her expression a mix of sympathy and concern. "The board is ready for you."

Sophia took a deep, steadying breath and nodded. "Thank you, Emma. I'll be right there."

As she stepped into the boardroom, the air seemed to grow thick with tension. All eyes were on her, the once-revered heiress now reduced to a pariah in her own company.

"Sophia, we've gone over the numbers, and I'm afraid the prognosis is quite dire." Uncle Dan who is often refer to as her father, the esteemed patriarch of the Felix family, spoke with a heavy heart. "We have no choice but to declare bankruptcy and liquidate the company's assets."

Sophia felt the blood drain from her face. "Bankruptcy? But... but how? We were doing so well, the company was thriving!"

Uncle Dan shook his head, his gaze filled with sorrow. "It's those damned investments in Vance Enterprises. The fallout from the scandal has crippled us financially. Investors are pulling out left and right, and we simply can't keep the company afloat any longer."

A sharp, bitter laugh escaped Sophia's lips. "The scandal. Of course. Everything always comes back to that, doesn't it?" She fixed the board members with a defiant stare. "And what about me? Where does this leave me?"

The board members exchanged uneasy glances, and Sophia's heart sank. "I'm afraid, given the circumstances, we have no choice but to terminate your employment and sever all ties with the Felx family," uncle Dan said, his voice laced with regret.

Sophia felt as if the air had been knocked from her lungs. "You can't be serious. This is my family's legacy, my life's work!" She pleaded, her eyes brimming with tears. "Please, you have to reconsider!"

Uncle Dan reached across the table, his weathered hand grasping hers. "I'm so sorry, Sophia. But the decision has been made. The company is going into receivership, and all assets will be liquidated to pay off our creditors."

Sophia stared at him, dumbfounded. "So that's it? Just like that, I lose everything?" Her voice wavered, the pain and betrayal evident in every word.

"I'm afraid so. The board has voted unanimously. You'll be escorted from the premises, and your personal belongings will be packed up and sent to you." Dan's gaze was filled with a sorrow she had never seen in him before.

Sophia felt as if the walls were closing in around her. Her entire world, everything she had ever known, was crumbling to dust before her eyes. "But what about the house? The cars? my family's wealth?" She pleaded, desperately grasping at straws.

Dan shook his head, his expression grave. "All of it will be liquidated to pay off the company's debts. I'm so sorry, Sophia. But there's nothing more we can do."

Sophia felt a scream building in her throat, but she swallowed it down, her pride refusing to let her break down in front of them. "Fine. I'll go." She rose from her seat, her legs trembling beneath her.

As she made her way to the door, she paused, turning back to face the board. "Just remember, this is all because of your precious Vance Enterprises. This is the price you pay for your greed and your betrayal."

With that, she turned and strode out of the boardroom, her head held high, even as her heart shattered into a million pieces.

***

The once-opulent Felix mansion stood silent, the once-vibrant gardens now overgrown and neglected. Sophia stood on the front step, a single suitcase in her hand, the only remnant of her former life.

She stared up at the towering structure, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. "It's really over, isn't it?" she whispered to the empty air.

A gentle hand on her shoulder made her jump, and she whirled around to see uncle Dan standing behind her, his eyes filled with regret.

"Sophia, I... I don't know what to say." He sighed heavily, his shoulders slumped in defeat.

Sophia shook her head, her gaze hardening. "Save it. You made your choice, and now I have to live with the consequences."

He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small envelope. "Here. This is all that's left. It's not much, but it's all I could save for you."

Sophia stared at the envelope, her fingers trembling as she took it from him. "What is this?"

"It's a trust fund. A small one, but it should be enough to get you started on your own." His voice was tinged with sorrow. "I know it's not much, but it's the best I could do."

Sophia felt the tears welling up in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. "I don't want your charity," she spat, thrusting the envelope back at him.

"Sophia, please. Take it. It's the least I can do." His voice was pleading, but Sophia shook her head.

"No. I don't need your money, or your help. I'm done with this family and everything it stands for." She turned to leave, but his voice stopped her.

"What about the pregnancy? What will you do?"

Sophia's heart clenched at the mention of her pregnancy. "I will be fine. I'll find a way to provide for her, even if it means starting over from nothing."
