Chapter 62 - The Evacuation

The helicopters were approaching the base, which had been brutally attacked by the walkers. Now that most of those walkers had been obliterated, soldiers had come out to eliminate the remaining ones.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

"Zz... Sir, what do we do with the helicopter being escorted?"

"We'll let it go once we've evacuated; we won't kill anyone." Said Dominic, keeping his priorities clear.

As the helicopters descended one after another, Daniel was outside and was the first to approach Stuart, who was giving orders to his soldiers.

"You must be Stuart; I'm in charge of this base by orders of The Librarian; are you aware of the orders?" As a former CIA agent, Daniel knew how to assert his authority.

Stuart evaluated the man in front of him and asked, "Which department do you belong to? I won't take orders from incompetent people, but being chosen by that person means you're not ordinary."

"Former CIA operative, does that have your attention now?" Daniel looked coldly at this man, hoping to see more about him.

When those nearby heard that Daniel was a former CIA agent, no one dared to say anything else. Maybe he was a soldier; these comparisons might not make sense, but Daniel's behavior didn't seem common within that department.

"I apologize for not knowing who's behind all these orders; it makes me a bit tense when someone else presents themselves to me by orders of that leader we don't know." Stuart turned to see how the soldiers from the military helicopter were being arrested by his men.

Daniel looked at the African American man named Donald and asked, "Who are they?"

"They appeared out of nowhere and bombed a horde of walkers; they've interfered with The Librarian's plans, so we'll put them under custody until then." Stuart said, turning his head to see how the helicopters were being loaded with military equipment that was hard to come by these days.

The things Dominic had achieved so far were incredible; Stuart couldn't believe that even a military base could be controlled by him, let alone winning over all these people.

None of this was easy because no one would be willing to make mistakes, especially in a situation like this where few knew what was happening.

"We'll prioritize resources with the strongest people; those who are not fit to expend our energy on will be left behind." Daniel looked at Stuart, who nodded, understanding these orders.

...

At the other end of the provisional base, Dominic was watching the evacuation take shape, so he walked to where the sick were and found Bethany attending to them.

"Doctor, we'll start the evacuation." Dominic got close enough to be heard and then stepped away.

Bethany looked at Liza, her assistant, and said, "Change the bandage for this soldier; I'll be back in a second."

Liza Ortiz, who had joined the medical team at this location, was surprised that Dominic, who until recently had been at her ex-husband's house, was now apparently giving orders at this site.

She didn't understand it, so she asked, "Is he helping out in this place?"

"Referring to him?" Bethany looked at Liza and shook her head. "It seems now everyone follows his orders; finish what I asked you to do and start moving the people we've selected."

Liza watched as Bethany walked away and pondered what she was saying at this point. Without more answers, she began to change the bandage for a soldier.

"Lately, I've been doing things I never thought possible; luckily, I've survived them all." Dominic, who was in a room, was checking the wound he had received when his head hit the side of the cabin during the turbulence.

Bethany was surprised to see that wound on Dominic and said, "Let me help you with that."

Upon hearing this, Dominic lowered his hands, looked at Bethany as she approached, and murmured, "Believe me, I'm doing everything I can to save as many lives as possible. Until now, they kept civilians locked up, waiting to be killed; at least I've increased their chances of survival."

"How's the situation outside?" Bethany changed the subject of the conversation.

"Everything is chaotic; believe me, if it weren't for my involvement, those walkers would already be inside this building." Dominic walked away after Bethany finished treating the wound on his head.

Bethany knew everything had improved since Dominic took control of this place, but if there was something that bothered her, it was that she could see how he practically seemed to be torturing himself on each of the missions he used to do.

If one didn't take care of their life, how could she believe he was interested in the quality of life of others?

When she found out about the first one Dominic had lost, she knew that until he changed his approach to achieving his goals, she wouldn't believe one hundred percent in him.

But for now, there was nothing better, so she said, "There are people who won't be saved, others who, with recovery and rest, can survive."

Dominic nodded and said, "If you assure me that none of them will die and turn into a walker, then I'll get everyone out of this place."

These would be the last actions he would take before they left this place. At least until tomorrow morning, he wouldn't evacuate personnel but supplies.

"Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to attend to some soldiers who arrived unexpectedly from another base." Said Dominic before heading to the cells that, until recently, had been filled with people outside the infection-free barriers.
