Chereads / Who Will Fall First? / Chapter 16 - 16

Chapter 16 - 16

It was a strange place, and feeling, really. It was dark, but somehow, there were little rays of light coming from an unknown place. It was like water, and I was floating in it, my hair sticking out in all directions, but I could still breathe. Nothing was there with me, and as I looked around, I wondered what this strange place was. I wondered what I could do in here other than breathe and float. After a minute, I tried taking a step with my good ankle, and my foot hit something that felt solid, but sent ripples in every direction on contact. I gently placed my other foot down, too, and tentavily raised my hand, wondering if there was a wall. As I did, some sort of film started to play, and I watched, wondering what was going on. In the film, a woman in a white wedding dress with black hair, and a man in a black tuxedo with a red bow could be seen. It was obvious they were both getting married, and for a minute, I puzzled over who they were. Then, I noticed the woman's face. The way her cheeks were round but had a slight sharp edge to them. The way her small nose scrunched up and the way her eyes closed when she smiled. She was my mother. And then I noticed the man's eyes. Those dark brown eyes that looked dark, but sparkled as he placed a ring on my mother's finger, and I could picture how intense his eyes were when staring someone down, just like mine. That was my father with his dark eyes. His dark hair. The memory disappeared, and another lit up behind me, so I turned to see what was going on in this one. Only to find it was my drunk ass mother punching my stomach, causing me to vomit up my breakfast. I wanted to look away, but I couldn't, frozen there with my anger and hatred. I always told myself she only got drunk because my father left, only hit me because he didn't lend a finger to help her raise me. But I had always known the real reason. It was because of my eyes, which would shine exactly like his, and get as intense as his would. She had loved looking into his eyes. Then, he had walked out on her, and left me behind with her. I could never understand why, though. It didn't make sense. Maybe if he hadn't left, she wouldn't have become a deadbeat! Maybe if he had stayed, she could've so much different! Maybe, if he had helped to raise me, I wouldn't have had to kill her in self-defense! I shook my head as the memory disappeared, and another one replaced it. But this wasn't a memory of mine. In fact, I don't even think it was anyone's memory. It showed Connor, Elizabeth, and the rest of the class, whispering and looking around. I noted the villain that had grabbed me wasn't there anymore. "Where the Hell did she go?" Connor muttered, looking at the ground I had disappeared through, his expression...pissed and...dark. A minute later, Ms. Violet tried to answer his question. "We don't know, but we've dug up information on that villains power. He can send someone into the darkest depths of their mind, make them relive certain memories, show them things that aren't real, or show them the past and present. It's called Timelapse. That's where Shelby is right now." "Well, can't we bring her back somehow?" He asked, balling his hands into fists, still staring at the same spot. "No. But she can come back on her own, somehow. We don't have enough information to know how she can, but she's smart, Connor. She'll figure it out and come back." Connor...why are you so worried about me? Is it because I disappeared? I thought you hated me and were just teasing me. But do you actually...? Once again, I shook my head, and reached my hand to touch the memory of the present-when my hand slid through it, causing my body to tingle. "Wait-Connor, look!" Elizabeth pointed to the ground, and there was my hand, poking through the floor. Connor crouched, and grabbed my hand, trying to pull me up. I foucused on pushing the rest of my body through, not the way his skin was hot against my cold hands. Finally, I was all the way through, and now lay on the floor, panting. Elizabeth knelt next to me. "You're wet. And panting. Are you-Hey, hey-!" Suddenly, my body started to shake violently, and I didn't know why. As far as I could remember, I'd never had a seizure, or anything like that. Someone rolled me over onto my side, letting their hand rest on my shoulder. "Get the nurse, quickly-" "We don't have time to wait for the nurse!" Suddenly, a pair of strong arms picked me up, and held me tight to their chest. That was the last thing I could remember before my eyes closed, and I sunk into the darkness, letting it swallow me whole.
