Rodriquez joined the academy at the age of 15. Regarded by many as a prodigy, she quickly excelled to the top of her class and skipped two years, becoming an ensign at age 17. During the battle of Yonos IV in 2247, she received a field promotion to acting XO with the respective rank of commander. After the battle, the UGA Fleet admirals, in recognition of her valor, officially awarded her the rank of commander, the youngest member of the fleet to achieve the rank; she was 19. She was then posted on the UGS EPSILON, after three years serving as the XO, she was involved in a daring rescue mission after the captain of the epsilon was kidnapped by Lograthian Pirates. She assumed the role of acting captain and was able to rescue the captain without bringing harm to the EPSILON or the Lograthians. For her loyalty and diplomacy, she was promoted to the rank of captain and offered a post on a new Yonos class heavy explorer, the UGS MITCHELL. She accepted the offer, and at age 22 became the youngest officer of the fleet to assume the rank of captain.

Carter joined the academy age 17. He completed his four years and graduated age 21, with full honors. He then served on the UGS PATHFINDER where he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant Junior Grade (age 23), and subsequently lieutenant (age 25), during the battle of Yonos IV, he was given a field promotion to the rank of lieutenant Commander and took over science operations on the Pathfinder. After the battle, he was officially promoted to Lieutenant Commander and awarded the post of Chief Science Officer aboard the UGS EPSILON (age 28). After three years serving this post, he was involved in an incident where the captain was kidnapped and was part of a team of officers, assigned by Acting Captain Elena Rodriguez, tasked with bringing back the captain unharmed, they were successful. For this, the fleet admirals promoted him to the rank of commander and he was offered a post, at the reccomendation of Captain Elena Rodriguez, as XO on a new Yonos class heavy explorer, the UGS MITCHELL (age 31).
