Chapter 22 - Second Chances (2)

Despite Lan Fengjin's apparent dissatisfaction with her, Feng Suyin remained composed as she continued her work. As she checked the charts of her assigned patients, she wondered if she should take advantage of the situation to get closer to the Lan family. Lan Ruoxin seemed to tolerate her, and she asked if it was because there wasn't a single drop of the Feng family running through her veins. She was sure the young man wouldn't treat her the same if she were Li Xinlian's true daughter.

Feng Suyin knew that to bring down the Feng family, she would need to uncover all their dark secrets and use them against them. Her adoptive parents weren't as honorable as the public viewed them to be. She wouldn't be surprised if they adopted them for a reason. Since Li Xinlian managed to get pregnant before her adoption, the rumors about her being infertile weren't true.

As Feng Suyin continued her rounds in the hospital, she tried to rack her brain, trying to remember details that she might have overlooked from her previous life that led to her demise. Some of them were glaringly obvious, and she found it laughable how she took them as the Feng family's concern towards her.

She had many regrets in her life, and though she found solace in her work in the hospital, her work at the research facility was her greatest burden. Feng Suyin thought that not only would she be recognized by the family that adopted her, but she would also establish her reputation in the medical field.

Hours passed in the blink of an eye, and as Feng Suyin stepped out of the operating room, she could feel her body still tensing from the long work hours. As she peeled off her surgical gloves, she glanced at the time at the clock on the wall. It was well past midnight, yet she knew her work was far from over. If she hadn't spent most of her time at the research facility, her workload at the hospital would not have been this overwhelming.

Thinking about it, Feng Suyin thought she spent her entire life living according to her family's expectations, never truly knowing who she was outside of their demands and desires. With a heavy sigh, she gathered her things and went to the break room for a much-needed coffee.

As Feng Suyin sat at the small table, nursing a cup of steaming coffee in her hands, she pondered what she should do next. It wouldn't take long, and her mother would know that she resigned from the research project. Surely, Li Xinlian would throw a fit and punish her severely for ruining their plans.

Just as she was lost in her thoughts, the door to the break room swung open, startling Feng Suyin for a moment.

"Suyin, I know I'll find you here."

A familiar woman gave Feng Suyin a warm smile. Feng Suyin stared at her blankly.

"What?" Jiang Yunyi snickered as she walked to the coffee machine. "You look as if you'd seen a ghost."

Feng Suyin snapped out of her daze but remained silent. Jiang Yunyi was a fellow surgeon and a good friend of hers. One month before Feng Suyin's wedding, Jiang Yunyi took her own life because of the scandalous affair her husband got involved with.

Feng Suyin couldn't believe that a woman who could smile warmly like this would take her own life. Her heart clenched at the sight of her friend. She wished she could have helped Jiang Yunyi in the past. She mourned Jiang Yunyi's death deeply, blaming herself for not being there for her friend during her time of need.

Jiang Yunyi poured herself a cup of coffee before sitting across from Feng Suyin. The familiarity with this gesture brought a bittersweet ache to Feng Suyin's chest. She wondered if her rebirth also meant second chances for those around her.

"Yunyi…" Feng Suyin started, her voice barely above a whisper. "Are you alright?"

She could see the dark circles beneath Jiang Yunyi's eyes and the exhaustion in her face.

Jiang Yunyi released a dejected sigh.

"I don't know, Suyin. I talked to my husband, and he denied having an affair with another woman. He allowed me to check his whereabouts using his phone and check his messages and emails, and there's not a name of any suspicious woman I've seen on them." She answered.

"But?" Feng Suyin arched a brow, wondering how she could help Jiang Yunyi avoid her pitiful end.

"But I have this feeling that he's having an affair!" Jiang Yunyi clenched her fist and shook her head. "I must be crazy suspecting my husband. I should trust him, but I couldn't shake this feeling, Suyin."

Feng Suyin reached across the table and gently touched Jiang Yunyi's trembling hand. She knew all too well the feeling of doubt and betrayal in a relationship, and she thought her experiences vastly differed from Jiang Yunyi's.

"You're not crazy, Yunyi," Feng Suyin said softly, her gaze filled with empathy. "If something doesn't feel right, it's worth investigating further."

Feng Suyin knew whom Jiang Yunyi's husband was having an affair with, but she would rather her friend see what kind of horrible person her husband was.

"I just don't know what to do, Suyin," Jiang Yunyi admitted, her voice quivering uncertainly. "I want to believe him, but the doubt is eating me alive."

"Feng Suyin squeezed Jiang Yunyi's hand gently, a resolve reflecting in her eyes.

"Why don't we ask for Lingling's help? Remember her cousin, Alex Xia? He could investigate your husband discreetly. We will know if your husband is having an affair or not." She suggested.

Jiang Yunyi's eyes widened at Feng Suyin's suggestion. Confronting her husband wasn't a good idea, but if she was wrong and he wasn't having an affair, Jiang Yunyi was more than willing to apologize and make up for her mistakes. She nodded slowly, her hand tightening around Feng Suyin's in gratitude.

"Alex Xia… yes, Lingling mentioned him before. If he could help me get to the bottom of this, maybe I can finally find peace of mind." She replied, her voice held a note of desperation.

Feng Suyin offered her friend a reassuring smile. This time, she would ensure that Jiang Yunyi did not suffer harm.

"I'll contact Lingling immediately and see if we can arrange a meeting with her cousin. We'll figure out this together, Yunyi. Don't do anything reckless until we know everything we need."
