Chapter 2 - school days

As Yasmin woke up at 6 in the morning, the dim light filtering through her curtains hinted at the early hour. She stretched, feeling the weight of another day ahead. Despite the sun's slow ascent, Yasmin's spirit remained in darkness, dreading what awaited her at school.

As she began her morning routine, her thoughts drifted to Sadeeq, the charming eighth grader who occupied her every waking moment. She couldn't help but smile as she pictured his fair complexion and the slight gap between his front teeth, concealed beneath his black surgical mask. His presence at Scholars, their private school, was a constant reminder of her unrequited affection.

Yasmin's heart sank as she recalled her friend Vanessa, who was now dating Sadeeq. The sting of betrayal lingered, souring the sweetness of her memories. She pushed the thought aside, unwilling to dwell on it any longer.

Descending the stairs of her modest home, Yasmin caught sight of her reflection in the hallway mirror. She sighed, noting the tiredness etched beneath her eyes. At twelve years old, she often felt out of place among her ninth-grade peers, the subject of their mockery and scorn. Her age became a target for their ridicule, a constant reminder of her perceived inadequacy.

As Yasmin prepared her breakfast, the chatter of her three cousins who lived next to them filled the air. Aisha, Amina, and Usman buzzed with excitement, oblivious to the weight that burdened their sister's shoulders. Their laughter echoed through the halls, a stark contrast to Yasmin's inner turmoil.

With her backpack slung over her shoulder, Yasmin stepped out into the crisp morning air. The walk to Scholars felt longer than usual, each step a reminder of the isolation she felt within its walls. She braced herself for the inevitable taunts and jeers, steeling her resolve against the cruelty of her classmates.

As she entered the school grounds, Yasmin felt the weight of their stares upon her. Whispers followed in her wake, casting shadows over her already heavy heart. She kept her head down, unwilling to meet their gazes, lest she see the disdain reflected in their eyes.

Yasmin's first class passed in a blur, the drone of the teacher's voice fading into the background. She struggled to focus, her mind consumed by thoughts of Sadeeq and Vanessa. Their happiness felt like a betrayal, a reminder of everything she longed for but could never have.

During recess, Yasmin found herself alone, a solitary figure amidst a sea of laughter and chatter. She watched from a distance as Sadeeq and Vanessa shared a tender moment, her heart aching with longing. She longed to be the object of his affection, to experience the warmth of his smile directed at her and her alone.

As the day wore on, Yasmin found herself retreating further into herself, seeking solace in the sanctuary of her own thoughts. She buried herself in her studies, desperate to escape the reality of her unrequited love.

As the final bell rang, signaling the end of the school day, Yasmin gathered her belongings and made her way home. The weight of the day hung heavy upon her shoulders, a burden she carried alone. But amidst the darkness, a glimmer of hope remained, a flicker of light in the depths of her despair. For despite the pain and the loneliness, Yasmin knew that tomorrow was a new day, filled with endless possibilities and the promise of a brighter future.
