Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Fire of Chaos

The viewing room was abuzz with murmurs and reactions as the teachers and academy officials watched the events unfolding in the virtual forest. The large crystal screen displayed a split view of various students scattered throughout the dense woodland, their movements carefully monitored by the academy staff. However, all eyes were now fixed on a specific section of the screen where a fierce fire had erupted, rapidly consuming the forest.

Professor Gerald, the head instructor, leaned forward in his chair, his brow furrowed in concentration. "What in the world is he doing?" he muttered to himself, watching the flames spread with unnerving speed.

"He's burning down the entire forest," another teacher remarked, her voice tinged with shock. "That level of destruction… it's reckless!"

"Reckless, perhaps," a professor countered, "but also highly strategic. He's using the fire to flush out the other students, force them into the open. It's brilliant in its own way."

"Brilliant?" scoffed a younger instructor. "It's borderline evil. He's using the environment to eliminate his competition without even facing them directly. There are students in there who won't be able to escape the flames."

Gerald's eyes narrowed as he watched Alex move through the forest, calm and methodical. "It's a tactic," he said slowly. "One that shows he's thinking several steps ahead. But it's also dangerous. If he's not careful, he could eliminate more than just his competitors."

The room fell silent as they continued to watch the fire grow, the flames licking higher and higher as they devoured the trees and underbrush. The instructors knew that this was a test of survival, where the students were expected to think on their feet and use whatever means necessary to stay alive. But Alex's actions had taken them by surprise. The ethical lines of what was acceptable in a test like this were blurred, and Alex was walking that line with alarming ease.

In the forest, the fire had begun to spread quickly, fanning out in all directions. The dense trees and dry underbrush provided ample fuel for the flames, which roared with ferocity as they moved through the forest. The smoke was thick, making it difficult to see more than a few feet ahead, and the intense heat was unbearable for many of the students who found themselves trapped.

The monsters in the forest were not spared. Those caught in the flames howled in pain as their bodies were consumed by fire, their cries echoing through the woods. The smell of burning wood and scorched flesh filled the air, adding to the chaos that was rapidly spreading.

Leon had been running through the dense forest, his heightened senses on high alert as he searched for a safe path away from the growing threat. The acrid smell of smoke filled the air, stinging his nostrils and making it difficult to breathe. His instincts screamed at him to keep moving, to find shelter before the fire engulfed the entire area.

As he sprinted through the underbrush, his sharp eyes caught movement up ahead. His hand instinctively went to the hilt of his sword, ready for a potential confrontation. But as he drew closer, he recognized the figures in the distance—Lila and Sophia. The two girls were moving cautiously, their eyes scanning the surroundings.

Leon skidded to a stop in front of them, his chest heaving from the exertion. "Smoke," he said, his voice urgent. "There's a fire nearby."

Lila looked around nervously, the scent of burning wood and leaves filling her senses. "A fire? How could there be a fire here?"

Sophia, always quick to assess the situation, narrowed her eyes as she surveyed the area. "This isn't natural," she muttered. "Someone started this fire on purpose."

Leon's mind raced as the pieces fell into place. The fire was spreading rapidly, and if they didn't move quickly, they would be trapped. He looked at Lila and Sophia, their faces reflecting the same realization. There was no time to waste.

"We need to get out of here," Leon said, his voice firm and resolute. "Now."

The three of them exchanged a brief nod, and without another word, they took off together, their pace quickening as they tried to stay ahead of the encroaching flames. The heat grew more intense with every step, and the thickening smoke made it harder to see and breathe.

Ethan had been engaged in a fight with a tiger-type monster when the first signs of the fire reached him. He had just finished the fight, the bear's body disappearing in a flash of light, when he noticed the thickening smoke in the air.

"What the…?" Ethan muttered, looking around in confusion. The forest had been peaceful, apart from the occasional monster, but now, it was as if the entire environment had turned against him.

He turned in the direction of the smoke, his grip tightening on his spear. The realization that someone had started a fire to flush out the other students began to dawn on him. "Whoever did this… they're trying to create chaos."

Ethan felt a surge of determination. He wasn't about to let some fire scare him off. He had come too far to be eliminated by something like this. With a final glance at the burning horizon, he set off.

Mira's sharp eyes caught the first signs of smoke rising from the trees below, and she immediately pointed it out to Victor.

"Look," she said, her voice filled with concern. "There's a fire down there."

Victor frowned, his usual calm demeanor replaced by a hint of worry. "That's no ordinary fire. It's spreading too fast. Someone must have started it."

Mira's mind raced as she considered their options. They could try to find higher ground, but the fire was spreading too quickly. They needed to move and avoid being caught in the flames. "We need to get moving," she said, urgency in her voice. "If we stay here, we'll be trapped."

Victor nodded in agreement, and the two of them began to move, their pace quick as they tried to stay ahead of the approaching firestorm.

All across the forest, students were beginning to panic. The fire had spread so quickly that many were caught off guard, their only thoughts on escape. Injured students, who had been unable to keep up with the pace, found themselves unable to move as the flames closed in. Some were eliminated by the heat, others by the lack of oxygen as the smoke thickened around them. The chaos that Alex had intended to create was taking its toll, and the forest was quickly turning into a battlefield of survival.

Meanwhile, Alex was perched high in a tree on the opposite side of the fire, his eyes scanning the ground below. He watched as the first few students, driven by fear, began to flee from the approaching flames. They were easy targets, their panic making them careless and predictable. Alex remained still, his breathing calm, as he waited for the perfect moment to strike.

As the first student ran past his hiding spot, Alex moved with the precision of a predator. He dropped down from the tree, his sword already in hand, and eliminated the student before they even had a chance to react. The student's body disappeared in a flash of light, their elimination confirmed by the sound of a soft chime.

Without missing a beat, Alex moved to his next target, a group of three students who were desperately trying to escape the flames. He circled around them, using the cover of the smoke and trees to his advantage. They didn't see him coming until it was too late. In quick succession, Alex struck each of them down, their bodies vanishing into the ether as he collected his points.

The forest was his hunting ground, and the fire was his tool of destruction. As the flames continued to spread, driving more students into his path, Alex remained hidden, waiting for his next prey. He had set the forest ablaze not just to create chaos, but to control the battlefield. And now, in the midst of the inferno, he was reaping the rewards.

In the distance, the flames roared louder, consuming everything in their path. The students who had once been confident in their abilities were now running for their lives, unaware that they were being watched by a calm, calculating Monster.
