Chapter 11 - Safety

Christine walked over to Leo, her heels clicking softly under her. She sat down beside him and wrapped an arm around his shoulder, her thumb rubbing gentle circles into his skin.

"Love," Christine started, "are you ok?" she asked Leo.

"I'm fine, why? Is something wrong?" Leo asked.

Christine sighed, "No nothing is wrong, it's just well..." she trailed off.

"You seem off, it's almost like you don't think we'll get out of here." Megan spoke, finishing Christine's words.

"We are-" He started, but was cut off by Jake.

"Cut the bullshit, you don't think we'll get out of this, right? We're all just gonna fucking die, aren't we!?" Jake shouted.

Leo opened his mouth to speak, but quickly shut it, he had no words. It was true he didn't think they would get out of here.

Andrea scoffed, her words filled with venom. "Wow Leo, after everything we've been through with the camping trip. You really don't think we can get out of one haunted asylum?"

"It's not that, it's just," Leo started before sighing, "complicated." he said.

"How!? What is so fucking complicated about this Leo!?" Chase shouted.

"Think about it! On the camping trip we were hunted by a pack! Here we're being hunted by a damn monster and a group of psycho fucking humans! And who knows what else!! Do you really think we can survive this time!?" Leo shouted.

The group was silent for a moment before Gwen spoke. "Nah guys, he's right. I mean we're just a bunch of dumb kids after all." Her voice was filled with regret, and pain.

"No that's not what I meant," Leo started.

The fighting woke up Stacey, clearly putting her in a bad mood as she sat up. "Then what did you mean Leo!?" She snapped, dropping her nickname for her brother. "Because right now that's what it feels like you meant! We're just dumb kids in a haunted asylum and we're gonna die out here, all because I chose to drag us out here thinking it would be fun. I'm just a dumb fucking kid!" Stacey shouted as tears formed in her eyes.

Leo didn't say anything more, instead he hugged her. Holding her close to his chest, the room was silent for a while. Until Leo broke the silence.

"I'm sorry...we are going to get out of here, if we can survive a murderous camping trip. Than we can survive this." He said.

The group glanced at him, but didn't respond. A few of them nodded while the rest just looked away. Chase was staring at the door, while Andrea was curled up against his side. They were all scared out of their minds, but they could only hope and pray they really would get out of this alive. After what felt like forever, a dark eerie whistle could be heard from a distance.

"Dixie?" Leo called out.

The sound of boots on the tiled floors could be heard, each step was closer than the last. Everyone tensed up, as the steps and the whistle got louder. Until finally the door opened revealing Dixie, the group all relaxed seeing her.

"Howdy." Dixie said, tilting her cowgirl hat back. "My group is asleep right now, so as long as we're quite we'll be fine." Dixie than glanced at Leo and frowned. "Is he ok?"

"He's fine he's just scared, he doesn't think we're gonna make it home.." Stacey explained.

Dixie rolled her eyes and scoffed, "How fuckin' pathetic. You get chased by a few crazy psychos and all of a sudden you think you're goin' to die? Man suck it up, and grow some balls." she said crossing her arms.

The group looked at her shocked, no one had ever talked to Leo that way.

"What's that supposed to fucking mean!?" Leo shouted at her.

"Well I'm just sayin' you got chased by a few psychos and now your thinkin' like it's the end of the line. If you were goin' to die, you would have died by now." Dixie explained.

Leo looked at her, and opened his mouth to talk. But nothing came out, he sighed and nodded.

Jake stood up with Megan, "Lead the way, cowgirl." he said.

Dixie hummed and led them out of the room, they walked for a while until they came across a makeshift camp. By the looks of it, it had long since been abandoned.

"Alright, we'll stop here 'til mornin' travelin' in the buildin' after dark is a no go right now. I don't have the right equipment to do so." Dixie explained, as she started a fire.

"Won't the smoke get us sick?" Chase asked.

"Nah, there's a window 'round here somewhere, it'll filter out." Dixie explained, before walked over to a storage bin. "Around here things are similar to a post apocalyptic set up, canned food, and river water. Me and my group don't leave the buildin' unless it's for water or supplies." Dixie said as she handed the group each a water bottle. Though there was a hint of longing in her voice.

"Don't you want to leave?" Christine asked, a frown on her face. "I mean being stuck in here with all these monsters, do you actually want to stay here?"

Dixie sighed and leaned back looking up at the ceiling, "Don't get me wrong suga'," she turned to glance at Christine before continuing. "I would love to leave, but my boss won't let me."

"Why not?" Riley asked, finally speaking after being silent most of the time.

"I signed a contract with him, I can't leave, unless I die." Dixie said.

"You have to die to get out of this shithole?" Jake asked.

"Unfortunately, and man I've thought about it." She said with a sigh.

"Why don't you leave with us?" Gwen asked.

"I'd have nowhere to go after, but I appreciate the offer." Dixie said with a small smile.

"You can stay with me, I live alone, just me and my Pomeranian. As long as you promise not to murder me in my sleep." Christine smiled.

Dixie shook her head and laughed. "I'll keep that in mind." Christine smiled, and leaned into Leo's side. "Ight you kids get some sleep, I'll stay awake and keep watch." Dixie said as she waved her hand at the group.
