Chapter 38 - Fractures and Determination

Deep within the sanctuary, the air shimmered with unnatural energy. The white-suited man stood at the apex of a ritual circle etched with intricate runes. Orithius and Kael stood behind him, their expressions a mixture of curiosity and unease. In the man's hand was a shard of obsidian, pulsating with faint light, like a dying star.

White-Suited Man: "With this shard, the first mechanism of the Seal can be weakened. Not broken yet, but… compromised. Small fractures now will pave the way for its destruction."

He knelt, pressing the shard into the center of the runes. As it touched the ground, the symbols ignited, bathing the room in eerie luminescence. The energy rippled outward, crackling with a force that made even Kael take a step back.

Kael: "That's… unsettling."

Orithius: "Is this truly necessary? The Seal is no ordinary artifact. It binds the balance of all realms. Even small changes could have irreversible consequences."

The white-suited man's gaze remained fixed on the glowing runes, a faint smile playing on his lips.

White-Suited Man: "And that's precisely the point. Consequences are the tools of change. This world has stagnated for too long, Orithius. You, of all people, should understand that."

Orithius's crimson eyes narrowed, but he said nothing further. Kael crossed his arms, his impatience evident.

Kael: "So what now? Do we sit around and wait for cracks to form?"

The white-suited man finally stood, brushing invisible dust from his pristine attire.

White-Suited Man: "Patience, Kael. The pieces are moving as they should. Soon, the Kagemoritai will exhaust themselves chasing shadows while we strike at the heart. For now, ensure that Nareth and the others are ready for the next phase."

Kael grinned, his scythe glinting ominously in the dim light.

Kael: "Oh, they'll be ready."

As the three figures exited the chamber, the runes pulsed one final time before dimming, the shard's energy seeping into the ground.

Kagemoritai Headquarters

In the heart of the Kagemoritai headquarters, Kenzo and Akira stood before a massive table displaying a holographic map of recent rogue devil activity. The patterns were erratic, but one thing was clear—the attacks were increasing in both frequency and strength.

Akira: "These aren't random incidents. Someone is coordinating this chaos."

Kenzo leaned against the table, his sharp gaze scanning the data.

Kenzo: "The question is why. What do they gain from spreading us thin?"

Akira's expression darkened, his thoughts turning to the Seal of Eternity.

Akira: "It's a distraction. Whatever their endgame is, it involves more than just sowing chaos. We need to prepare the boys. They're not ready for what's coming."

Kenzo smirked, though there was little humor in it.

Kenzo: "They'll never be ready if we keep shielding them. They've got potential, but potential doesn't win battles. Only experience does."

Akira crossed his arms, his gaze softening slightly.

Akira: "And yet, they're still just kids. Shiro especially… he has more weight on his shoulders than he realizes."

Kenzo's smirk faded, replaced by a rare moment of seriousness.

Kenzo: "Then it's our job to make sure he doesn't buckle under it. Let's push them harder. No more holding back."

Akira nodded, his resolve firm.

Akira: "Agreed. But we'll need to keep a closer eye on the bigger picture. If the Seal is their goal, we can't let them succeed."

The Training Grounds

The afternoon sun blazed overhead as Shiro and Chiyo stood before Kenzo in the open expanse of the Kagemoritai training grounds. Sweat dripped from their brows, their exhaustion evident. The previous sessions had left them battered, both physically and mentally.

Kenzo clapped his hands, his voice sharp and commanding.

Kenzo: "Alright, you two. Today, we're focusing on pushing your elemental affinities to their limits. Shiro, your light energy has grown, but it's still unstable. Chiyo, your wind affinity is impressive, but you're holding back. That ends now."

Chiyo raised an eyebrow, his spear resting against his shoulder.

Chiyo: "Holding back? You've got to be kidding me."

Kenzo smirked, lightning crackling faintly around his fingertips.

Kenzo: "You heard me. Both of you have been coasting on raw power. It's time you learned control."

He gestured to a series of targets set up across the field, each designed to withstand and measure elemental attacks.

Kenzo: "Your task is simple: destroy the targets using only your inherent techniques. No weapons, no tricks, just pure elemental energy. Let's see what you're made of."

Shiro and Chiyo exchanged a glance, their competitive streaks igniting. They stepped forward, their focus sharpening.

Shiro closed his eyes, summoning the light energy within him. It radiated from his palms, warm and blinding. He thrust his hands forward, sending a concentrated beam of light toward the nearest target. The impact was powerful but uneven, the light scattering upon contact.

Shiro: "Damn it… it's still unstable."

Chiyo stepped up, his expression calm but determined. He extended his hand, and a gust of wind spiraled around him, growing in intensity. With a swift motion, he sent a razor-sharp wind blade slicing through the air. It struck the target cleanly, leaving a deep gash.

Chiyo: "Not bad."

Kenzo's voice cut through their thoughts.

Kenzo: "Better. But you're both still hesitating. Hesitation gets you killed. Again!"

The training continued, each attempt pushing them closer to their limits. Shiro's frustration grew as his light energy faltered, while Chiyo's precision waned under the mounting pressure. Finally, both collapsed to their knees, their breaths ragged.

Shiro (thinking): "We couldn't even scratch Nareth. How are we supposed to stand a chance if we can't even master this?"

Kageboshi's voice echoed in his mind, calm yet firm.

Kageboshi: "Strength isn't just about power. It's about resolve. Find yours, and you'll unlock what you've been searching for."

Chiyo clenched his fists, his pride stinging as he recalled their defeat.

Chiyo (thinking): "I won't let that happen again. I'll surpass my limits, no matter what it takes."

Kenzo watched them silently, his expression unreadable. After a moment, he clapped his hands again.

Kenzo: "That's enough for today. Rest up. Tomorrow, we push even harder."

As they stumbled back to the barracks, a renewed determination flickered in their eyes. The battle ahead loomed large, but they refused to let despair take root.

In the Sanctuary

In the depths of the sanctuary, the white-suited man stood before a massive, ancient tome resting on a pedestal. The room was dark, save for the faint glow emanating from the book's pages. Orithius entered silently, his crimson eyes narrowing at the sight.

Orithius: "The Seal… It's weakening faster than expected. Are you certain we can control what lies beyond it?"

The white-suited man turned, his blue eyes gleaming with a mix of anticipation and malice.

White-Suited Man: "Control? No, Orithius. Control is an illusion. But when the Seal breaks, the realms will finally know the justice they deserve. And we will be the ones to deliver it."
