Her second question arose from her curiosity—it wasn't what she had originally prepared to ask. She was shocked to find out that Olivia's mother knew where she was taken after she was kidnapped. Did that mean Olivia's mother had contact with the center? But if she did, she would have known better than to try and take her back. As far as Sophie was aware, the center was a place that, once you were in, you could never leave—except if they released you, like they had released her after seven years.
Was that why Olivia's mother was killed? Because she tried to bring Sophie back? But Sophie had heard that Olivia's mother died in a car accident while on her way to somewhere, not returning from it, meaning she never reached her destination. So, the center didn't kill her because they weren't aware she was coming. Instead, someone else must have killed her. But who? Sophie wondered, although the pain made it difficult to think clearly.
