"Shane, can you help me find out if Richard Adams is my real father?" Sophie said, her voice trembling slightly, catching Shane off guard. His attention snapped to her, surprise flickering across his face.
"Hmm," he nodded, keeping his response short, sensing the vulnerability in her eyes and choosing not to push further.
Shane's phone rang loudly as he pulled into a parking spot. He glanced at the screen before picking up the call, his expression briefly betraying something Sophie couldn't quite read.
"I'll be there," he said curtly, cutting the call and turning to face Sophie, who raised an eyebrow in question.
"So, you're abandoning me here for tigers to devour? That's wrong of you, young master," Sophie teased, but the underlying tension in her voice was unmistakable.
"It's important," Shane sighed, his tone softening. "I'll be back soon, and I know you're strong enough to handle yourself, little wife. Don't make me feel bad."
