Chapter 49 - The Bitter and the Sweet

Lucas didn't make a sound, he just let his eyes flick between the pendant and Celia's nervous face, then back again. She could see him swallowing hard again.

She wasn't sure if that was a good sign or not. Feeling an overwhelming urge to fill the ongoing silence, Celia heard herself starting to babble an explanation.

"I know you said, well, you said you don't need a reminder. To remember that Gabriel lived, I mean. But I thought you might like, um, to have a…a trinket dedicated to him. So that you know I haven't forgotten him either…"

Holy hell, why do I sound so childish and idiotic, Celia asked herself? If I were any closer to a wall, I'd be smacking my head against it repeatedly now.

Still, Lucas said nothing.

Celia looked up at him and folded her arms across her chest in a gesture of self protection. Had she gotten this all terribly wrong?
