Chapter 18 - 1. 18. Fathers (Part 1)

The night went on with Bu Jinyan at the mercy of Li Mei.

Bu Jinyan woke up the next day feeling refreshed. The glass rooms where he is currently staying are typically booked with the expectation that customers will spend the night, much like a hotel room.

Amenities such as blankets, hygiene products, and even contraceptive items are available, though the rooms lack bathrooms. However, there is a small indented room, covered by a small sliding door, equipped with a toilet and sink.

Without getting up, Bu Jinyan extended his arms to his sides, feeling the couch for Li Mei. To his surprise, he couldn't find her there. Immediately, he got up and searched for her everywhere, but he only found a note from her.

With a blank expression, sadness, and loneliness began to engulf his heart.

Ring——

Ring——

After his phone rang twice, he began rummaging through his scattered clothes.

"Bro, where are you right now?!" His overly excited big brother's voice almost burst his ear as he answered the call.

"I'm at the bar," he answered back. "I have to tell you something. About the job at your company, I don't think I can work there right now. I have something to do," he added.

He wanted to sort out his emotions and wait for Li Mei. Since he didn't get a chance to get her contact information, he thought that he would have another opportunity to reencounter her if he continued working at the bar.

"I'm not calling about that. I'll postpone your hiring until you're ready. I just got a call from Mom. She said that Pop just had a bad fall and is currently in the hospital for a broken hip," Bu Jinnan quickly explained.

"What? Why didn't they call me?" Bu Jinyan pushed everything else to the back of his mind, his focus now entirely on what he had just heard.

"Bro, we all tried to call you, but you weren't answering. What were you doing last night?" Bu Jinnan explained and worriedly asked. "You need to get to the hospital first. I'm still far away. My boss asked me to do something outside the city," he added.

Thinking about his night with Li Mei, Bu Jinyan blushed and hurriedly put his clothes on. "I was just drunk last night after meeting a friend. I'm on my way out now. Text me the address of the hospital," he answered.

...…

Before Bu Jinyan woke up that morning, Li Mei suddenly opened her eyes. She recalled what she did last night and looked down at the man who resembled a sleeping baby, evident from his blissful face. Her expression morphed from confusion to devastation.

She realized that she loved Wang Haoran dearly and did not want to give up on him. Time or sleeping with another man would never change that. Quietly and slowly, she got up from the couch and put her clothes on. She left a note for Bu Jinyan, explaining that what happened last night was just a one-time event and not to take it seriously. She also added that she had someone special in her heart and asked him to forget about her.

She wrote "Thank you" at the end and silently left the room without looking back.

Knock! Knock!

"It's me," Aunt Hi said, standing in front of Li Mei's door next to a meal trolley.

At present, Aunt Hi's knock brought Li Mei back from her stupor. "Come in," she said, glancing happily at the sleeping Wang Haoran next to her.

Aunt Hi opened the door and started setting up for dinner as quietly as possible, careful not to disturb Wang Haoran's nap. Everyone close to Wang Haoran knew how hard he worked, especially now that Liu Leah's parents were probably not going to lend a helping hand.

Knock! Knock!

Another knock was heard, followed by the door opening. Zhao Bolin urgently entered with a worried face, noticing Wang Haoran waking up, probably from the constant knocking.

"Boss, I need to speak with you outside for a bit," Zhao Bolin spoke with an urgent tone.

Wang Haoran, still groggy from sleep, woke up immediately upon seeing Zhao Bolin's expression. He got up, kissed Li Mei's forehead, and followed Zhao Bolin to the next room. Upon closing the door, Wang Haoran heard him say, "Boss! I think the Lius will not stop pressuring us until half of the company's assets are halved."

Wang Haoran ignored Zhao Bolin and proceeded to wash his face in the washroom. With a heavy heart, he returned to the couch in the room and sat down.

Ring—

Zhao Bolin's ringing phone broke the tense atmosphere brewing inside the room. "This is Zhao Bolin speaking," he answered quickly when he saw the name of the caller.

"Sir, good news," a joyous voice came from the other side of the phone. "Liu Aiden withdrew from going against the company," the man on the phone added.

With a smile like spring, Wang Haoran nodded his head, then put the phone on speaker. "That's a relief. We can finally breathe and start preparing for the last phase!"

"Sir, he also mentioned that he will let it slide this time because Liu Leah begged him just today after waking up from her coma. Liu Aiden added that we should treat his daughter better in the future or else."

Wang Haoran ignored the last part of what his other trusted subordinate mentioned. "Let's start the last phase," he ordered.

...…

On the fifth day of Liu Leah's hospitalization, Zhou Chun, her personal assistant, who had not been seen since the day of Li Mei's accident, came knocking on the door. Her father had sent himself to the hospital due to difficulty breathing and chest pain. His family had a long history of heart problems, so he was very vigilant about any symptoms that could threaten his life.

Zhou Chun's father was an early widower but never remarried. His wife's life was taken by a drunk driver when Zhou Chun was only five years old. He couldn't even get angry at the driver because the driver passed away instantaneously. For his daughter, he worked hard but made sure he made time for her, knowing she would grow up without her mother.

He decided against getting his daughter a stepmother, fearing it would harm her. He didn't want to leave her alone in the world, especially since they had no close relatives. With all these concerns weighing on him, he became proactive in maintaining both his and his daughter's health.

His only wish is for his daughter to meet the one and have lovely children before he passes away. This daughter of his has a successful career after all and only needed an obedient husband. He's been collecting a lot of stories to tell his beloved wife in the afterlife, and their daughter happily married would be an excellent addition to those stories.

Between her father's situation and Liu Leah's matter, Zhou Chun was so busy that her foot seemed like it could not touch the ground. However, getting continuous updates on Liu Leah's situation made it easier for her not to worry about not being by her side.

Zhou Chun could now visit Liu Leah as everything on their end was stable and her father's health had no problems. With the help from the young miss's parents, everything went smoothly.

In front of Liu Leah's room, Zhou Chun could hear laughter—it was Liu Leah's voice. She knocked lightly and slowly opened the door.

"Who could make young Miss laugh so loud like she does not have any care in the world?" Zhou Chun wondered if Wang Haoran was inside the room. The current Liu Leah is madly in love with Wang Haoran after all.
