Chapter 20 - Friendly Fire

The third platoon repelled the enemy's attacks time and time again.

The British offensive was indeed fierce, but under the leadership of Wang Wei Yu, the Third Platoon displayed a surprising momentum.

Especially under the stimulus of the Iron Cross, their confidence and courage were fully displayed.

Of course, there were casualties; six soldiers had fallen on the battlefield forever.

Though not many, for Wang Wei Yu, who was already stretched thin in terms of manpower, it was still unbearable. But what could be done? This was war!

In war, there will always be a large number of casualties.

Standing out remarkably in today's battle was the Chinese laborer, Guo Yun Feng. His marksmanship was as impressive as his skill with a knife.

Comparing him to Bonkers Rayleigh, Wang Wei Yu firmly believed this man would not be inferior.

From his simple account, Wang Wei Yu knew he had never fired a gun before. But some people always have a talent, often mastering things they've never experienced before.

This kind of talent is irreplaceable.

On this day, the third platoon repelled eight enemy charges, and their position stood like an unyielding fortress before the British.

But when the sun rose on the second day, the situation suddenly took a turn for the worse!

The British showed their true capabilities on this day.

The artillery rained down relentlessly, bombarding the position with an endless barrage of shells, threatening to level it entirely.

Position G was too close to the British; their shells could easily reach the position, while the German artillery couldn't provide them with direct support.

The incessant shelling threatened to tear Position G apart. A soldier named Rudio was blasted into the sky because he failed to hide properly, and when his body fell back down, it couldn't even be pieced together neatly...

Everyone watched silently, feeling powerless. Each of them might end up like Rudio.

British tanks began to appear!

Four at once! This was a huge threat to Position G!

"Too confident," thought Ding Yunyi bitterly. Just as he was about to give the order to defend, a messenger from the battalion headquarters appeared on the position.

He brought Major Denswick's order: The entire Third Platoon was to withdraw from Positions G and B!

"What?" Wang Weiyu thought he had misheard.

"Yes, Lieutenant, you heard me correctly!" the messenger raised his voice to tell Wang Weiyu, "The British 82nd Infantry Division has broken through our left flank positions. We must retreat! Our artillery will cover this area in 30 minutes!"

"Damn it!" Wang Weiyu exclaimed angrily.

The damn military base had tasked them with holding Position B, but now they were being ordered to retreat? How were they supposed to complete the mission?

"Lieutenant, there's no time, I must inform nearby units!" said the messenger before agilely leaping out of the position.

"Retreat, retreat!" At this point, Wang Weiya had no other option: "Retreat to position B, rendezvous with Sergeant Hall, everyone evacuate this cursed place!"

Soldiers jumped out of their positions amidst enemy fire, while at this moment, British tanks arrogantly advanced towards them.

"Lieutenant, what about you?" Adolf Hitler asked anxiously.

"Go, you go first! Tell Sergeant to retreat immediately!" Wang Weiya said anxiously, watching the tanks approaching closer and closer.

As he watched the soldiers leaving their positions one by one, Wang Weiya breathed a sigh of relief. Just as he was about to leave, he suddenly saw one person still relentlessly shooting towards the enemy from the position. Furious, he was about to scold the soldier for not obeying his orders, but as he saw the person clearly, he almost cursed himself for being foolish.

It was Guo Yunfeng!

Wang Weiya forgot that Guo Yunfeng couldn't understand German, so he didn't hear the retreat order. Just as he was about to switch to Chinese, a sharp whistle sounded in the air.

Artillery fire!

Wang Weiya rushed forward and pulled Guo Yunfeng down into the trench. The artillery fire instantly engulfed the surroundings...

Shells fell one after another, and Wang Weiya and Guo Yunfeng couldn't even lift their heads. Two of the four tanks on the opposite side were instantly destroyed by the artillery fire!

Damn it, this isn't the British artillery fire! This—it's the German artillery fire!

The German artillery bombardment started ahead of schedule!

Was it the headquarters advancing the time, or was it that blasted messenger messing up the timing?

The artillery bombardment covered everything around, seeming to want to completely destroy everything here!

The advancing British troops were instantly scattered.

But now the problem was, Wang Weiya and Guo Yunfeng couldn't run out either!

What about position B? What about the brothers from the Third Company? Now everything was uncertain...

"Damn it, why did the artillery bombardment start early?" Schteik exclaimed loudly.

"Retreat, retreat, get out of this cursed place!" Sergeant Hall also shouted angrily, "Make sure to remember that messenger, I'll execute him! These damn unreliable messengers!"

Hitler's face had an unnatural color; after all, he originally served as a messenger.

As he glanced outside the position, he was horrified to see that Position G was completely engulfed in their own artillery fire. He grabbed Sergeant Hall, "Sergeant, Lieutenant is still there!"

The German soldiers, who were preparing to withdraw, suddenly halted their steps. Yes, Lieutenant Ernst was still there!

"Retreat, retreat immediately!" Sergeant Hall didn't change his mind, "If we don't leave here now, we'll all die under our own artillery shells!"

"No, Sergeant!" Adolf Hitler became incredibly stubborn at this moment, "Lieutenant is still there, we can't abandon him!"

"I must be responsible for the entire company! Private Adolf!" Sergeant Hall said solemnly, "Lieutenant Ernst can take care of himself. Now I am the highest-ranking officer here, and I will not sacrifice everyone's lives for one person!"

After saying that, he loudly ordered his subordinates, "I now command you all to leave here!"

Although the soldiers had deep affection for Lieutenant Ernst, they had to reluctantly leave position B under the command of Sergeant Hall. Adolf Hitler's eye sockets were red.
