The sudden burst of light made Paula squint for a moment as it contrasted sharply with the dim elevator. The familiar face of Ronald appeared among the crew, his brow furrowed with worry.
"Paula!" Ronald called out, extending his hand to her. Though she could not quite place it, there was a hint of something other than pure concern lurking underneath his expression.
She didn't have time to dwell on it. She extended her hand to grasp his, and Ronald helped her out of the elevator with a strong tug.
Paula's heart continued to race due to the peculiar turn of events, and she was still thinking about how heavy Len's confession was. Nevertheless, she made herself concentrate, control her breathing, and ignore the confusion that was about to consume her.
