The party was in full bloom. Paula moved easily among the guests, striking up conversations with some of the more powerful ones, while Maria remained off to one side, engrossed in dialogue with Len.
They witnessed the festivities.
Maria leaned in closer to Len, her voice carrying a playful tone. "So, are you planning to pursue your ex-wife, Len? I saw the way you stepped in earlier. You can't fool me."
Len glanced at her slantwise, his expression unreadable. "You should be more worried about your brother, Maria, instead of sticking your nose into my life."
Maria chuckled, her laughter light and teasing. "My brother can take care of himself. But you… you're more interesting to watch."
Len smirked, shaking his head. "You haven't changed a bit, have you?"
Because they had been friends for years thanks to Maria's husband, they both knew each other quite well. Their bond was comfortable, the kind that allowed for teasing without offense.
