Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Skill Scrolls

Leaving the restaurant, Jack rejoined the hustle and bustle of the world.

The town of Byron serves as the largest and most well-established gathering place for adventurers in the Lapps region.

Except for the mainstream adventure industry.

The extended food and beverage, lodging, and entertainment industries have likewise flourished.

The number of adventurers and caravans that were attracted every day was huge.

The main street in the center of town was so open that it could accommodate up to ten carriages driving side by side.

But as far as the eye could see, it was still crowded.

Simply because this street, connects the two major coordinate buildings, the Adventurer's Guild, and the Trading Plaza.

Moving with the flow of people, it didn't take Jack long to arrive at the trading plaza.

As the name suggests, it's a rather extensive circular plaza.

On the outermost periphery are various traveling merchants and vendors.

From the most common items to some rare contraptions.

It is a place where almost every item imaginable by the customer is gathered.

Jack strolled briefly around the outskirts of the square.

The transcendent materials sold here were of the more low-grade and ordinary types.

Occasionally, there were some materials stripped from the fire-attribute magical beasts, and they had all lost most of their activity.

It can only be used in the manufacture of defense and weapons by virtue of its hardness and fire-resistant properties.

This kind of stuff really isn't even an ingredient for dragon eggs.

"Don't miss it. The primary skill scrolls are on sale, and there is a full range of types to help you advance ...."

A yell caught Jack's eye.

The yeller was a big man with a lean physique.

He was in his early sixties, his gray hair tied into a short ponytail at the back of his head.

There was also a short bow at his waist, and he was dressed as an obvious adventurer.

It was also the first time Jack had seen an adventurer of this age, and he couldn't help but be more than a little curious.

"Don't just stand there looking at it, you just say what scrolls you need." The old man said.

His gaze had the sharpness of a falcon, but it was to Jack's side that he looked.

Jack pointed to himself with some uncertainty.

"Hmm? Are you talking to me?"

The old man said impatiently, "Nonsense, not talking to you, am I talking to myself!"

Jack raised his hand and waved it toward the old man's eyes, "But I'm over here."

The old man looked embarrassed.

Then he turned his sharp eyes to look behind Jack.

In a bad mood, he said, "I don't need you to remind me; I have good eyes!"

Jack glanced at the air behind him, sensibly not correcting the other man.

He asked, "I'm planning on upgrading my basic skills, and I was wondering if you have any suitable beginner scrolls here."

When touching a skill scroll that is in the same field as your own skill, in the same field.

Adventurers will feel a subtle connection.

Make proper use of this feature.

Adventurers wouldn't spend too much money on buying skill scrolls.

"Basic skills?"

The old man shot a surprised look at Jack.

"No way, old brother. Are there still people giving basic skill upgrades these days? You've got no place to spend your money?"

Basic skills are skills that humans can master through their own learning and exercise.

However, the immensely grueling learning process dictates that the humans who master them are destined to be in the minority.

But in this age where transcendent powers are prevalent.

What is this human skill?

"No, even."

"Hey, don't rush off! You've found the right person when you ran into me. The scrolls that contain the basic domains are currently only stocked by the military of various kingdoms, and there are still a large number of them. The ones in my hand are all old stock from the past, and they're not seen much on the market anymore."

Saying that the old man took out three Primary Skill Scrolls from his own storage bag.

He seemed confident in his own strength and wasn't the least bit worried that Jack would make a move to grab it.

"Just these three books; let's see if they fit."

Touch three skill scrolls separately.

A flash of surprise appeared on Jack's face.

Two of the three skill scrolls were actually able to establish a subtle connection with him.

They are:

[Name: Battle Group Maintenance]

[Level: Primary]

[Area: Defense, Basic]

[Source: Centurion of the Guards]

...

[Name: Shield Armor]

[Level: Primary]

[Area: Defense, Basic]

[Source: elite soldiers of the Heavy Shield Battalion]

Abilities in both skill scrolls.

It all comes from mankind itself.

They are not part of the transcendent powers, but they are fueled by skill scrolls.

Yet, it allows soldiers to skip the grueling practice.

Easily acquire these tactical skills.

This is why basic skill scrolls mostly, are circulated among the military.

Satisfied, Jack said, "How much are these two scrolls in total?"

"The Transported Armor Technique is five hundred, and the Battle Line maintains a rarer one, with an original price of seven hundred silver coins."

The old man's eyes are bad, but he has a lot of heart.

He sensed the change in Jack's expression.

There is no ambiguity in the quoted price.

Skill scrolls that suit you are far too rare.

Even knowing that the old man's offer was a bit on the high side, Jack wasn't going to miss out on these two scrolls.

But with money at stake, Jack was not prepared to give in easily.

So it was, after some intense bargaining.

Jack managed to pocket two scrolls for ten gold coins, or one thousand silver coins.

"Tsk, it's really not without reason that you can earn so many gold coins; you're quite experienced, old brother."

The old man exhaled with some heartburn.

I don't know if it was a compliment to Jack's adventurous experience or his bargaining skills.

Holding a gold coin above his head, the old man appeared to be using his eyes to distinguish the color of the coin.

In reality, it was quietly discerned by rubbing his fingers together, and his eyes really weren't very good.

"Huh? Where's the experience in that? I'm just a half-assed adventurer who's just recently resumed my old ways in order to make milk money."

Tucking the little bag of gold back into his arms, Jack acted humble.

...

Hiding the two skill scrolls close to his body, Jack entered the store area further to the core.

After sending the shield to the smithy for repair, Jack fished a piece of parchment out of his traveling bag.

"The rest of the skill scrolls will be given to Ian. Next, it's time to find food for the child."

On the parchment was written the name of one of the transcendental materials.

Jack had penciled out the top few.

The latest to be painted with a horizontal line is none other than the Flame Goblin's outer skin.

"Let's see, the next ingredient is ... the stomach pouch of a lava mad lizard."

After another long stroll through the store area, Jack never found this transcendent material.

In the meantime, however, Jack sought out another skill scroll that suited him.

And for four hundred and eighty silver coins, he pocketed the scroll.

"It looks like we still have to go to the Adventurer's Guild to gather information and hunt on our own."

Leaving the Exchange Square, Jack walked in the direction he had come from for nearly twenty minutes.

A huge building with an overall grayish-white tone, filled with classical beauty, appeared in front of Jack's eyes.

The builders of Byron Township seem to have had a penchant for circular structures.

This three-story building in the shape of a ring tower was the Adventurer's Guild, one of the landmarks of Byron Town.

Nine-foot-high arched folio doors, like the giant mouths of behemoths, were constructed in eight different directions of the guild.

Maximum convenience for adventurers to come and go.

Jack stepped through the southeast door into it.

The hall on the first floor was gathered with the largest number of adventurers.

The place was packed with people, but it still retained a fair amount of order under the maintenance of the guild officers.

After a few minutes of waiting in line, Jack finally sat down at the service window.

"Please give me information on the lava mad lizard."

Jack handed out his adventurer's badge and flashed a gentle smile across the room at the lovely-looking staff member.
