Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Trust

I don't exactly recall what I was doing there that day. It's almost as if I was drawn there by fate itself and no other reason. Someone, or something, wanted me to be there at that exact time. If I never went there we would have never met. That thought is simply unbearable. I still vividly remember everything from that night.

I was out for a walk since I had been cooped up in my apartment the whole day. I had no specific location in mind I just wanted to move a bit. I was led to a nearby park and decided it was a nice place to relax for a bit. I found a bench and took a seat, everything seemed perfect about the scene. Good weather, a nice view of the sky, the crickets chirping. So I, like anyone would, completely passed out. Looking back that wasn't the best of ideas but still, I'm grateful that I did. I was in a deep sleep, and when I finally came to it had been nearly two hours.

The first thing I saw when I opened my eyes though was not the magnificent starry sky, instead, it was something even more outstanding. A girl, who looked roughly my age, sat atop the jungle gym in the center of the park. Her eyes were gleaming in the moonlight, a wonderful, golden color. Her long pale hair fluttered in the wind. She also wore a white sundress that complimented her appearance greatly. It was an almost supernatural sight. I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming. Thankfully I wasn't.

Now I normally find myself to be a very timid person, I try not to bother other people. I threw that all out the window that night though. I don't know why but I felt as if I needed to talk to her, I knew that if I didn't I would regret it for my whole life. I slapped my cheeks to wake myself up and lifted out of my seat. As I motioned toward her I wondered how shady I must look, it was nearly two in the morning after all. Regardless though I pushed forward, all the way right up to her. Then… I froze. I had no clue what to say or what I was doing, what the hell was I thinking I asked myself. I robotically moved back and was thinking about running away when suddenly, she spoke. "You want something?"

She was staring straight down at me, into my eyes as she said it too. I completely froze for a second trying to figure out what to say and all that came out was "I'm not sure." My face turned completely red when I realized what I said, however to my surprise, the girl started laughing hysterically.

"What do you mean 'I'm not sure' that's one of the funniest things I've ever heard."

I started laughing too since I didn't even know what I meant by it, or what I was doing. When she calmed down she looked into my eyes again and said "So you just decided to walk up to me because you felt like it?"

"Yeah, pretty much, I'm sorry for bothering you."

"Hey no worries, I needed a good laugh, so thank you, for that. Say, what are you doing out here at this time?"

"Honestly, I accidentally fell asleep on the bench over there and just woke up a few minutes ago."

"Oh, you know I saw you over there when I came, you were sleeping like a baby. If I was a worse person I could have easily robbed you then and there."

"Yeah, that was a really stupid thing to do wasn't it, thank you for not robbing me."

She started laughing again "Who the heck says that, you're a pretty interesting guy. That's a compliment by the way."

I awkwardly laughed and said "That sure doesn't feel like one, but thanks I guess. Hey, just out of curiosity what are you doing here at this time?"

"Someone is curious, hmm, should I tell y-o-u" she smugly remarked.

"I don't mean to pry or anything, you don't need to answer if you don't wanna."

She looked straight into my eyes and said "I'm just messing with you. I don't mind telling you," she paused, stood up, and jumped off the jungle gym. There was a gracefulness of how she jumped to the ground, almost as if she floated down. When she landed she was no more than a foot away from my face. She did all that yet kept eye contact with me the whole way down. There was a long pause before she spoke again, it felt like it could have been hours, even though I'm sure it was mere minutes.

Then, she said in a serious voice, "I come from the sky." I still don't know why but at that moment I fully believed what she had said. Even though I had no way to trust that statement I knew it was the truth. Looking back maybe it was her eyes, she stared so deeply into mine that I think I would have believed anything she said.

She looked away from me for the first time the whole night after saying that and mumbled "Do… you believe me?"

For whatever reason I wholeheartedly stated, "Yes, because I know, for some reason, you wouldn't lie to me."

She looked back at me, very clearly blushing and with a massive smile on her face, then she replied "Thank you, that makes me happy." The look she gave made me start to blush too. After that, we stood there for a while not talking once again.

I was the one who decided to speak up, I asked "Could it be that you can't go back, to the sky that is?" That was a pretty bold thing to say, especially knowing next to nothing about her.

She replied, looking melancholic "No, I'm not able to, seeing how I don't even know where I would go."

"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to ask a sensitive question like that."

"It's fine, no need to apologize."

"How long have you been here, I mean like not in the sky."

"Honestly, just two days. I guess as for what I was doing here, well, I've been sleeping here."

"In the park?!"

"Yep, trust me it isn't fun"

"Hey, if you want I can put you up in a hotel or something."

"No no no, I couldn't have you do that it would cost way too much money."

"I can't just let you sleep in the park, please let me do something for you, I insist. Hell, if you could… actually never mind."

She looked at me confused and said "'If you don't mind,' what?"

I started frantically looking back and forth between her and the ground, there's no way I could say what I wanted to say. Then, I thought about it and said screw it. I looked at her, feeling very embarrassed, and said "Y-yo-you can stay at my apartment, there's more than enough room." I can't believe I said that. There's no way she would say yes to such a crazy offer.

She looked towards the ground and mumbled "Do you, really mean that? If you really wouldn't mind then I would be willing to take up that offer."

I stared at her bewildered and said "You don't mind? I mean I'm practically a complete stranger to you, I would understand if you didn't want to."

She paused for a second to think. Then she looked me straight in the eyes and said "You believed me, so I'll trust you." When I tell you that line made my heart skip a beat it would be an understatement. It made me feel a way I had never felt in my life before, I don't know how to explain it, but it made me happy for some reason, maybe the happiest I've ever been.

I smiled at her and she smiled back. Part of me wished we could stay there talking in that park forever, but I knew that was impossible.
