I woke up to the sound of leaves rustling and twigs snapping. My heart pounded in my chest as I sat up, blinking the sleep from my eyes.
The cave was dimly lit by the fading embers of our fire, casting eerie shadows on the walls. Beside me, Zaya stirred, her instincts already alerting her to the presence of danger.
"Eileen, stay close," Zaya whispered, her voice tense.
I nodded, feeling a knot of anxiety form in my stomach. We had fought hard to get here, and now it seemed our peace was about to be shattered. As I peered out of the cave, I saw them: six figures emerging from the dense foliage, their faces obscured by the darkness. They moved with purpose, their intentions clear.
"We've been found," Zaya murmured, a hint of frustration in her voice. "Get ready."
