Chapter 28 - Great fight

The room buzzed with a newfound energy as Thalira stepped forward. Her presence commanded attention, and the determination in her eyes mirrored the fire within me. This was no ordinary challenge—this was a clash of equals, and everyone around us could feel it.

"Ready whenever you are," I said, trying to keep my voice steady, despite the adrenaline pumping through my veins.

Thalira's gaze never wavered as she selected a sword from the array laid out before us. She tested its weight, giving it a few experimental swings before nodding in satisfaction. Her confidence was palpable, almost infectious.

"I've been watching you, Eileen," she said, her voice carrying a hint of respect. "You're good. But I'm not here to be impressed. I'm here to win."

"Then let's not waste any time," I replied, my grip tightening on the hilt of my sword.

We moved to the center of the mat, the space between us charged with anticipation. Professor Alaric, still recovering from our bout, stepped aside, his eyes filled with a mix of curiosity and caution. This was no ordinary duel—this was a test of mettle, a measure of our worth.

"Begin!" Professor Alaric's command cut through the air like a whip.

Thalira was fast. Faster than I had anticipated. Her first strike came at me with the speed and ferocity of a striking snake. I barely managed to parry, the impact reverberating up my arm. She didn't relent, her follow-up attacks a blur of steel and precision.

I matched her blow for blow, our swords clashing in a symphony of metal. Each strike, each parry was a testament to our skill and determination. Sweat began to bead on my forehead, but I couldn't afford to be distracted. Thalira was relentless, and any lapse in concentration would spell my defeat.

"You're not bad," she admitted, her voice strained with effort. "But you'll have to do better than that."

"Funny, I was about to say the same thing," I shot back, a grin tugging at my lips despite the intensity of the fight.

We circled each other, looking for openings, testing each other's defenses. I could see the respect in her eyes, but also the unyielding resolve. Thalira was a warrior, through and through.

Her next move was unexpected. She feinted to the left, then spun, aiming a low sweep at my legs. I jumped, barely avoiding the blade, and countered with a strike aimed at her exposed side. She twisted, our swords meeting in a shower of sparks.

"Nice try," she panted, eyes blazing. "But you're not getting rid of me that easily."

"I wouldn't have it any other way," I replied, pushing her back with a series of rapid strikes.

The room around us faded into the background. There was only Thalira and me, locked in a dance of steel and skill. Each move was a calculated risk, each strike a testament to our training and determination.

The sound of our swords clashing echoed through the gymnasium, drawing the attention of other students who had stopped their own practice to watch. Whispers of excitement and disbelief rippled through the crowd. This was no ordinary sparring match—it was a spectacle.

Thalira's attacks grew more aggressive, her strikes coming faster and harder. She was pushing me, testing my limits. I met her challenge head-on, matching her intensity with my own. My muscles screamed in protest, but I ignored the pain, focusing solely on the fight.

"You're good, Eileen," Thalira said between gritted teeth. "But let's see how you handle this!"

With a fierce cry, she launched into a flurry of strikes, her movements almost a blur. I was forced onto the defensive, my sword moving instinctively to block and parry. It was all I could do to keep up, my arms aching with the effort.

But I couldn't let her overpower me. I dug deep, summoning every ounce of strength and skill I had. I blocked her final strike with a powerful parry, using the momentum to spin and launch a counterattack. My blade sliced through the air, aimed straight at her exposed flank.

Thalira barely managed to deflect it, her eyes widening in surprise. I pressed the advantage, pushing her back with a relentless assault. She stumbled, her defenses faltering under the onslaught.

And then, with a swift and decisive strike, I disarmed her. Her sword flew from her hand, clattering to the ground a few feet away. The room fell silent, the only sound our heavy breathing.

For a moment, we just stood there, staring at each other. Thalira's chest heaved with exertion, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock and admiration. Slowly, a smile spread across her face.

"Well fought," she said, extending a hand. "You really are something, Eileen."

I took her hand, shaking it firmly. "You too, Thalira. That was an incredible fight."

The tension in the room dissipated, replaced by a sense of mutual respect. The students who had been watching erupted into applause, their cheers echoing off the gymnasium walls. Professor Alaric stepped forward, his expression one of grudging approval.

"Well done, both of you," he said, his voice carrying a note of pride. "You've shown exceptional skill and determination. Keep that up, and you'll go far."

I nodded, feeling a surge of satisfaction. The fight with Thalira had pushed me to my limits, but it had also reaffirmed my resolve. This was where I belonged—among warriors and scholars, honing my skills and pushing myself to new heights.

As the applause died down and the students began to disperse, Thalira and I made our way to the side of the room. We were both exhausted, our bodies aching from the exertion, but there was a sense of camaraderie between us now. We had tested each other, and we had both emerged stronger for it.

"So," Thalira said, a mischievous glint in her eye, "what do you say we make this a regular thing? Friendly competition, to keep us both sharp."

I laughed, nodding in agreement. "I'd like that. It's always good to have a worthy opponent."

With that, we parted ways, each of us heading to our next class. As I walked through the halls of the university, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. The fight with Thalira had been intense, but it had also been exhilarating. It reminded me why I was here—to push my limits, to learn and grow, and to become the best version of myself.

As I approached the classroom for my next lecture, I glanced at my reflection in a nearby window. My face was flushed, my hair slightly disheveled, but my eyes shone with determination. I was ready for whatever challenges lay ahead.

The day continued with a series of lectures and practical sessions, each one building on the skills and knowledge I had gained so far. But the fight with Thalira lingered in my mind, a reminder of the strength and determination that lay within me.

When the final class of the day ended, I made my way back to my dorm room, the events of the day replaying in my mind. The encounter with Xada, the fight with Professor Alaric, and the duel with Thalira had all been pivotal moments, each one shaping my journey in its own way.

I opened the door to my room, the day's events still buzzing in my mind. As the door swung open, I froze. Sitting on my bed with a smirk was Lise, her red eyes gleaming with mischief.

"Hello, pretty girl," she purred, her voice dripping with amusement.

My heart skipped a beat. "Lise? What are you doing here?"

She leaned back casually, her smile widening. "I thought it was time we had a little chat."
