Chapter 4 - A system

The sun was dipping below the horizon as Elise and I made our way back to my house, our arms laden with bags from our shopping spree. We chatted excitedly about the day's events, our voices echoing in the empty street.

"You look like you're ready to collapse under all those bags," Elise teased, her laughter ringing in the cool evening air.

"I might just use them as a makeshift bed and call it a night," I replied, only half-joking. As we entered my house, the familiar scent of home enveloped me. It was comforting, a stark contrast to the opulence we'd experienced throughout the day.

Elise, ever the planner, had already brought her dress for the evening. "Now, let's get you into that stunning dress we found. A car will be waiting for us shortly," she said, her eyes gleaming with anticipation.

I hesitated, feeling a twinge of nervousness at the thought of being the center of attention. "I'm not sure I'm ready for this," I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper. Elise placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder.

"You'll be breathtaking, Eileen. Trust me." With her encouragement, I slipped into the black sequined dress, the fabric hugging my figure in all the right places.

A pair of sleek heels completed the look, and as I gazed at my reflection, I couldn't help but feel a surge of confidence.

"You look beautiful," Elise said, and I believed her. The car that awaited us was sleek and black, its doors opening to reveal a plush interior that promised a ride in luxury.

We slid into the backseat, the city lights blurring past us as we made our way to the restaurant. The restaurant was a vision of elegance, its walls adorned with intricate murals and golden accents that glinted under the soft lighting. The servant greeted us with a polite nod, leading us to our table a secluded spot with a view of the bustling kitchen.

The menu was a work of art, each dish described with poetic flair. "The chef's special tonight is a pan-seared sea bass with a citrus beurre blanc," the server explained, his voice smooth and practiced.

Elise and I exchanged a glance, our excitement palpable. "We'll start with the truffle-infused mushroom risotto," Elise decided, her eyes scanning the menu.

"And for the main course, I think I'll have the sea bass," I added, my mouth watering at the thought. The server nodded, scribbling down our orders.

"Excellent choices. I'll be back with your meal shortly." As he walked away, I leaned back in my chair, taking in the ambiance. The clink of glasses and the murmur of conversation created a symphony of dining delight.

"I can't believe we're here," I said, my voice tinged with awe. Elise smiled, raising her glass in a toast.

"To new experiences and the best birthday yet and to you leaving your bed" Our glasses clinked, the sound crisp and clear.

I took a sip, the wine rich and velvety on my tongue. As we waited for our meal, I realized that this was more than just a birthday dinner.

The server returned, balancing our dishes with practiced ease, and beside him, a sommelier cradled a bottle of wine that looked older than time itself.

"Excuse me," I interjected as they approached, "we didn't order this wine." The server followed my gaze to the back of the restaurant, where a woman sat alone.

She was striking, with flaming red hair that cascaded over her shoulders like a molten waterfall.

Her eyes were a deep, fathomless black, reminiscent of the night sky, and they seemed to hold a spark of otherworldly fire. She wore a suit and tie that spoke of power and elegance, the fabric hugging her form in a way that was both commanding and alluring.

Yet, it was the subtle scales that glinted at her wrists and the faint outline of wings behind her that revealed her true nature—a human-dragon.

I offered her a polite smile, acknowledging the gesture before turning my attention back to the table. Elise caught the exchange and leaned in, a mischievous glint in her eye.

"Looks like you've caught someone's attention," she teased. I shrugged, feigning indifference.

"Let's just enjoy the meal." As we savored the exquisite flavors, the server discreetly placed a sheet of paper beside my plate.

I glanced down to see a number scrawled across it, undoubtedly belonging to the mysterious woman. With a slight of hand, I pretended to pocket it, while Elise watched, amusement dancing in her eyes.

The evening waned, and as we prepared to leave, I discreetly dropped the paper into the trash.

Outside, Elise and I exchanged heartfelt goodbyes before heading to our respective cars. The drive home was a blur, my mind replaying the night's events. Once inside, I quickly showered, washing away the remnants of the day, and then collapsed onto my bed, the comfort of my sheets a welcome embrace.

But the night had one more surprise in store. Suddenly, an hologram flickered to life before me, its light cutting through the darkness.

"Congratulations, you've unlocked a system," it announced. I blinked, nonplussed.

" A system, not interested," I muttered, swiping at the hologram, but it remained stubbornly in place.

"It's time to become one of the strongest mages, or even the best," it continued, undeterred by my lack of enthusiasm. A black 'X' materialized within the hologram, and on impulse, I reached out and touched it.

The image dissolved into nothingness, leaving me alone with the silence of my room.

"It's time to sleep now," I whispered to the empty space, a yawn escaping me. And with that, I let the day's excitement fade into dreams, my last thoughts drifting to the adventures that awaited me, both in games and in this new, mysterious reality.
