It, in fact, did not get better. Days came and passed in that cage, and Kitty's stomach grumbled incessantly. The captor hadn't appeared in a while. His despair had turned to anger and frustration, as there was no other entertainment, so he entertained himself by acting out. No longer afraid to make noise, he growled and yowled.
"Let me out! You bastard!" He rattled the cage with his hands. "I want fooood! Wahhhh." He sobbed dramatically.
A Bakeneko from another cage suddenly gave him a glare. His lips moved, but then he quickly flattened his ears and looked away.
"!" Kitty exclaimed in shock. " Heyyy! I saw that! Talk to me! That person hasn't been around, so we can talk right?" This was the first time any of the other Bakeneko had acknowledged him, and he was so bored beyond belief he was desperate for some interaction. "What's your name?"
The Bakeneko stayed silent. Kitty thought he heard him mumble angrily to himself. "You must feel the same as me! So let's talk to kill our boredom!"
"Sigh…" Slowly, the Bakeneko turned Kitty's way. Kitty beamed. From the Bakeneko came a raspy, but young sounding voice, and from the looks of him, he was around fourteen or fifteen in human years," You… you should give up now, I'm new too, but I've already heard rumors of this place. No one wants to speak with you. I am saying this out of kindness, but you should learn about the human's authority."
"The… human's authority?" Kitty looked puzzled. "What is this weird situation, what are we, slaves?"
Abruptly, the Bakeneko hissed ," Do, do not use that word slave! It makes it sound unjust. In reality, this is the way things should be. Bakeneko should submit to human power. Bakeneko are pets, and servants who should do their best to be useful." The Bakeneko's tail lashed angrily. "You are an adult, why don't you know this?"
Ignoring the last question, Kitty blurted, "Isn't that the same thing as a slave?"
The other one:"..."
"Ah, so it seems you are in denial." He paused, thinking. While it was true in his past life that cats were owned as pets and such, but a Bakeneko was obviously not a cat! " We are just as intelligent as humans, therefore should we not be equals?"
"What a stupid guy…" The other Bakeneko hissed. "Your words make my ears bleed. Whatever. You will learn in time that having thoughts of 'equal-ness' will only cause a headache."
Kitty was stumped, but right now he wanted to stop thinking. "So, what is your name?" He flashed a grin. "Maybe we can help each other and be friends.
Bakeneko's eyes widened and narrowed, as if he was thinking 'this guy's stupidity knows no bounds'. Maybe his boredom was too much for him, too though, so he supplied, "My last family called me Chip."
"Chip!" Kitty's grin was too bright, annoyingly so. "I don't have a name… but you can call me Kitty!"
Chip snorted. "How weird! That's what you call yourself?" Chip chuckled. "It's almost like you are a baby, not knowing anything…only a kitten would be called 'Kitty'".
"Oh…I guess that makes sense. I don't know what else to call myself though, so I'll still call myself Kitty until I can decide on something better."
Then, Chip burst out laughing. "It's hilarious… You really don't know!" He held his stomach.
"Huh? I said something weird again?"
"No, it's funny so I won't correct you." Chip smirked.
"???"
Just then, the sound of another bakeneko shifting in their cage sounded through the room. "Chip! Kitty! Both of you are complete fools! I will say this once for you both, since you both have not been here for long. The Captor is a cruel man, if he catches us talking out of the designated time, we could be in trouble. We are not in an ordinary shelter."
Just after saying that, and Kitty began to ponder about what kind of place this was, the gray haired adult bakeneko lay still once more, turned towards the wall.
