Chereads / The Marriage Bargain: Betrothed To Mr. CEO / Chapter 5 - Exploits and Tricks

Chapter 5 - Exploits and Tricks

Juniper's POV

"There, all done!" Lucian beamed, signing his name with a flourish at the bottom of the settlement contract.

I took the pen from his outstretched hand, pulse thudding nervously. This was it - the final step to put Orion's deception behind me. To reclaim my rightful stake in the business.

I held the paper inches from my face, studying every line one last time. No hidden clauses, no tricks that I could spot. Just the generous terms Lucian had assured me were fair. Terms that gave me a significant share of profits in perpetuity, along with back payments.

I trusted Lucian's judgement implicitly now after he had come clean about his history with Orion. Surely he wouldn't overlook any traps within the dry contractual text.

I exhaled slowly and scrawled my signature where indicated with a decisive hand. "There. I'm done with this."

Setting down the pen, a profound sense of relief washed over me. It was finally concluded.

Lucian gathered me into his arms, lips brushing my forehead. "I'm so proud of you, Juniper. We stood up to those who tried to wrong you and emerged victorious. A fresh start for both of us."

He pulled back, eyes shining with joy. "Why don't we take a drive and celebrate? Dinner at that charming bistro in town you love?"

I found myself smiling at his infectious enthusiasm. "I would love that."

Hand in hand, we left Orion's treachery far behind us, heading out into the warm promise of a new future.

Orion's POV:

"Not a bad haul for an evening's work," I remarked, sipping appreciatively at my scotch as the lawyer slid into the chair across from me.

We had just finalized the oh-so-generous contract with Lucian and that idiot Juniper. Well, generous to them. Thanks to my little trick, not so much for me.

The worm of a lawyer smiled obsequiously. "You played your roles flawlessly, sir. They never even glanced at the clause I added in at the last second."

I savored a long sip, relaxing back into the chair's plush depths. "Read it back to me one more time. I want to bask in my victory."

The lawyer neatened the stack of papers he carried with a fastidious hand before clearing his throat.

"As per subsection 5.4b of the executed settlement agreement, Mr. Orion Blackwell retains full rights to audit the complete financial records and accounts of Ms. Juniper Gray. This mandate remains in perpetuity until nullified by mutual written agreement of both parties."

A wolfish grin spread across my face. Ooh, that was delicious. Stupid Juniper deserved what was coming.

"So, in plain terms. I get to examine every last penny she has, all her assets, earnings, everything." I smacked the desk in glee. "And she can't even try to limit it or hide anything, can she?"

The lawyer shook his head. "No sir. The contract compels her complete compliance in granting you unfettered financial access. She has no ability to refuse."

The audacity of Juniper had always infuriated me. Even after I so thoroughly disillusioned and humbled her, the stupid girl still walked around with her pathetic pride and defiance intact.

But now? Now Juniper would learn to bend to me. She'd have to let me scrutinize her every dollar, every account number. I'd make her feel worthless and financially crippled, just as she had made me feel emotionally that fateful day. Turnabout was sweet revenge indeed.

I raised my glass high. "To complete financial control over Juniper Gray!"

My oily lawyer echoed the toast before draining his glass. I grinned wolfishly. Oh, I couldn't wait to watch Juniper's face when she finally figured out how thoroughly I had regained the upper hand.

A Few Days Later

Juniper's POV:

I hummed cheerfully as I headed into the kitchen to start breakfast. Today was shaping up beautifully. Last night's celebratory dinner with Lucian had been perfect, our moods buoyed by a sense of closure. The contract was signed, Orion's machinations thwarted once and for all.

Lucian had already left this morning for a routine business trip. I was looking forward to when he returned so we could take the next steps in strengthening our bond. Our reconciled relationship was no longer shadowed by the specter of Orion.

The shrill ringing of my cell phone interrupted my happy reverie. With a frown, I glanced at the caller ID which showed Orion's number. I nearly declined the call, but some morbid curiosity compelled me to answer.

"What do you want?" I demanded without preamble.

His honeyed tones, so chillingly reminiscent of the lies he used to spin, rankled me immediately. "There's no need for such hostility, love. I was simply calling to request copies of your financial statements and proof of assets."

My brow furrowed in confusion. "Excuse me? What are you talking about?"

He laughed nonchalantly. "The contract, darling. The one you and Lucian so hastily signed the other day without proper review. Didn't your lawyer explain the clause that gives me full oversight of all your finances?"

My heart stuttered in my chest. He had to be lying again. "That's impossible. That settlement finalized my share of the business and profits clearly. With zero conditions-"

Orion cut me off, voice dripping condescension. "So naive. You should have read more carefully before signing, sweetheart. But don't worry, I'm happy to walk you through all the legal mumbo-jumbo."

He launched into a recitation of some dense contractual jargon, but all I could focus on were the words "unfettered financial access" and "complete compliance."

Bile rose in my throat as I realized I had been deceived again. While we had celebrated with Lucian thinking the matter concluded, Orion had quietly seized control over my assets and income. All without my knowledge or consent.

Dimly I became aware Orion was still speaking. "-so as you can see, it's all quite permissible and legally binding. I expect you to start sending over those financial statements by the end of the week."

Gritting my teeth, I tried to project confidence I didn't feel. "I agreed to no such thing in that contract. You've clearly slipped in deceptive language again to exploit me-"

"Exploit you?" he interrupted with mock indignation. "I haven't exploited anything, you foolish girl. You agreed to terms, for which I graciously compensated you. Now I intend to oversee my investment properly. Don't even try denying me either - it's written in binding contract that you signed."

His arrogant words sapped what remaining self-assurance I felt. He was right - I had carelessly signed that settlement, putting my complete trust in Lucian's judgment. How could I have allowed myself to be so blind?

"I'll be in touch soon with my financial requests," Orion stated smoothly. "No delays, no dodges, no hiding anything from me. Or I'll be forced to take legal action to compel your compliance. Understood?"

My blood boiled with impotent fury as I realized again the depth of my helplessness against this man. "You despicable snake! You'll never-"

The call clicked off before I could speak further. I hurled the phone across the room where it clattered uselessly. Hot tears of rage and defeat streamed down my cheeks. Enough was enough!

I rapidly dialed my lawyer's number, demanding he call me back immediately. When he finally did, I wasted no time brusquely relating the conversation with Orion.

"Please tell me he's just bluffing! That contract doesn't give him any control or access to my personal finances?" I begged.

There was a long pause before the lawyer spoke in grave tones. "I'm afraid he's not lying, Ms. Gray. There was a...clause added that I regrettably overlooked. It does indeed entitle Mr. Blackwell to complete financial disclosures from you."

The words were like a punch to the gut. In that moment, I hated both Orion and this useless excuse for an attorney with equal intensity. They had utterly failed me by negligently handing Orion the power he always craved - control.

"How could you miss something so massively important?" I cried, not bothering to hide the rage and devastation in my voice. "You might as well have just given him the keys to my identity! To my entire livelihood!"

The lawyer mumbled some ineffectual apologies before I cut him off. "Just stop. Leave me before I say things I can't take back."

I hung up with trembling hands, feeling utterly defeated. Trapped once again under Orion's heel, forced to live at his mercy and watchful eye. I would have no financial independence, no privacy or security, not as long as Orion wielded these exploitive contract terms.

And he would never let me escape it. He would lord his power over me endlessly, I realized. Watch me squirm, stripping away my hard-earned autonomy more with every financial report he demanded. This was his twisted revenge.

In that miserable moment, I wished I had never met Lucian at all.
