Chapter 16 - Fossils

Kovak retaliates by lifting a massive boulder and flinging it at Shunichi. The rock flies through the air, gaining speed with each passing second. Shunichi remains calm, channelling his earth magic to form a protective dome around himself. The boulder smashes into the dome, the impact causing the earth to tremble. Stone fragments shoot in all directions, splintering the fighters around, but the dome stands.

With the might of the earth radiating from his gaze, Shunichi rises from the dust. He strikes the earth with his fists, sending a web of fractures flying in Kovak's direction. The other Earth user leaps away with astonishing quickness for someone so big. The fissures unite into a solitary streak, speeding in Kovak's direction; nevertheless, his footfall causes the earth to break beneath the fractures. The streak of cracks veers off, just missing him.

Kovak laughs, a deep, resonant sound that seems to shake the very air. He raises his hands and the ground beneath Shunichi's feet starts to rumble. The earth trembles, and a series of pillars erupt around him, trapping him in a prison of stone. Shunichi's eyes become bigger and he begins to sweat, but ultimately his mana runs out and he is buried alive in the jail made of earth.

With the exception of the sound of pebbles settling around the new grave, the battlefield becomes eerily quiet. Kovak turns, his gaze searching for the next challenger. It's then that he feels it—a static charge in the air, a signal that another elf has entered the fray.

Uhr quickly flashes away as a lightning strike hits the position he was previously in.

Krall Vader, the formidable Lightning user in the Alrodene camp, emerges from the shadows, her eyes crackling with electricity. Her movements are swift, a blur of light and shadow as she darts across the battlefield, leaving trails of sizzling afterimages in his wake. The anticipation is palpable as he locks eyes with Tanaka Fukuyama, the opponent who attempted to strike Uhr.

With the electricity dancing around their fingertips, the two Lightning users assess one another. They go from striking each other with lightning strikes to dodging each other in the space of a single eyeblink. With each bolt serving as a silent reminder of their dominion over the element, the sky above them seemed to spring to life with flashes of their might.

Fukuyama's Snake Eyes activate, allowing him to see the flow of energy through Krall's movements. He anticipates every part of his opponent's body, catching where the lightning element is about to manifest.. He strikes swiftly, aiming for the gaps in Krall's defence, where he predicts the lightning will not be directed. The ground beneath them cracks and splits as their combined power resonates through the earth.

The two elves fly off before crashing into each other once again, Vader with her sword spins like an electrocuted top while Fukuyama can only use his arm guards to block. They use ten times their usual output, frying even the air surrounding them, though beads of sweat already form in Fukuyama's head as Vader's seemingly reckless strike takes more of his concentration than he anticipated.

Though he can lessen his input thanks to his eyes, Vader seems to not think of output much and is just using sheer power to overwhelm him. Her rotations per minute just increases the longer the fight takes. The chaos around him is drowned out like tunnel vision as he stares death in the face. Is this how it ends? Killed by someone spinning, like a top? What happened to the combat flair, or the complicated types of lightning that can be used?

Fukuyama feels reality slip away as he blocks this seemingly simple move, nobody can support him as they are tied down in their own battles, some of them are even killed in different ways.

Vader spins and spins and spins even faster, her body becoming a blur of blue until a loud crack can be heard as his arm guards get ripped to shreds, forcing him to use his arms. It doesn't take long before his arms rip to shreds of meat, and his body is consumed by spinning lightning.

A loud caw reverberates through the air, a loud gust of wind rips through the clouds, out of the sky Margaux's talons coated in thick lightning shatters the horizon streaking towards Botan with his sword moving to block it.

Harpies are actually related to Elves, and used to be more common, but after the age of flight that only lasted for 180 years, the Harpy population became less and less, and the Elves became the major force.

But even so, they still participate in wars.

Botan quickly parries, his sword vibrating violently as the lightning produces a loud one note sound that can be heard across the battlefield.

"Lightning? Useless." A strong gale exits like exhaust out of his nostrils, dispersing the raging lighting in all directions. Botan quickly adds distance between them.

Botan thrusts his sword, which is blocked with a talon. With a spin he attempts to strike her leg but she flashes away from him. He clicks his tongue.

The small number of elves and the large battlefield basically made the fights degenerate into one on one slogging fests. With one elf focused on another and not enough time and too long of a distance for two to gank another. What a disaster.

Botan wants to signal a retreat and a reorganization of the battle but is constantly being pressed by Margaux, this time the Harpy uses her wingspan to block his sight, and with a flap of her wings it's as if not only Lightning but the ability to manipulate wind is embedded in her hollow wing bones.

Botan dodges the blade of wind coming his way, causing wooden splints and dust to rise up in the air. Due to his negligence, the army didn't bring gas masks and his Elves were struck by a fossil from the Crome clan.
