Chapter 18 - The fall

The battle was brutal and swift. As Lucian and Elera clashed, their swords ringing against each other in the eerie silence of the pass, each strike was a test of skill and resolve. Lucian, driven by the need to protect and survive, matched Elera's ferocity with a determination born from desperation.

Aria, though injured, kept a vigilant watch from her cover, her bow ready despite the pain that throbbed from her wound. The mist that hung over the pass seemed to thicken, muffling sounds and distorting shapes, adding a ghostly quality to the already tense atmosphere.

The fight took a dire turn when Lucian, his focus split between Elera and concern for Aria, missed his footing on the uneven ground. Elera seized the opportunity, her blade sweeping in a deadly arc towards Lucian's exposed side. Time seemed to slow as Aria, seeing the imminent danger, made a split-second decision that would change everything.

With a desperate cry, Aria threw herself in front of Lucian, the sword intended for him piercing her instead. The impact knocked her back into Lucian's arms, her eyes wide with shock and pain.

"Lucian...," Aria gasped, blood blossoming across her chest, her life force ebbing rapidly. "Promise me... stay strong..."

Lucian's world narrowed to the dying light in Aria's eyes. "No, Aria, hold on. Please, hold on," he pleaded, his voice breaking as tears blurred his vision.

But it was too late. With a final breath that carried a whisper of her love and a plea for him to find peace, Aria slipped away, leaving Lucian with nothing but her still body in his arms.

The grief that gripped Lucian was a physical pain, sharp and suffocating. As it overwhelmed him, the dark power within him responded, surging to the surface with a ferocity he had never before experienced. The air around him crackled with dark energy, shadows swirling like a storm.

Elera, realizing the gravity of what had just occurred, stepped back in horror, her weapon dropping to the ground as she stared at Lucian, whose grief was transforming into something terrifying.

"I... I didn't mean—," she started, but Lucian's roar of anguish cut her off.

"You will pay!" Lucian's voice was no longer his own, distorted by the dark power that now enveloped him. Shadows extended from his body like tendrils, reaching out towards Elera and the hidden archers with malevolent intent.

Elera scrambled back, fear overtaking her senses as she witnessed Lucian's transformation into the embodiment of vengeance. The ambushers on the cliffs, too stunned to continue their attack, watched in horror as the dark energy exploded from Lucian, sending rocks and debris hurtling through the air, reshaping the landscape itself in its fury.

Lucian stood alone in the aftermath, the clearing shrouded in darkness that pulsed with his anger and sorrow. Aria's final plea echoed in his mind, but the pain was too great, the loss too deep. The darkness he had vowed to control now held dominion over him, his promise to Aria shattered beneath the weight of his unchecked power.

As the dust settled and the shadows receded slightly, Elara, who had barely managed to avoid the chaos, approached Lucian cautiously. "Lucian," she called softly, heartbroken at the sight of her friend so consumed by despair and darkness. "We need to find peace, not just for us, but for Aria. She wouldn't want this for you."

But Lucian, lost in his grief and rage, barely recognized her words. The path ahead was uncertain, fraught with danger—not just to his enemies, but to himself and anyone who dared come close.
