"It doesn't matter how I found out," Garette replied. "All that matters is that I know. And I want to hear the truth from you. Did you really kill someone at Brimstone?"
There was another long pause before Dyanne finally spoke again. "Yes," she admitted in a soft, flat voice. "I did."
Garette felt as if the air had been punched out of him as her words washed over him like a bucket of ice-cold water. "Why?" he managed to force out. "Why would you do something like that?"
"It was self-defence," Dyanne replied quickly, her tone defensive. "The man was going to hurt me. I had no choice but to defend myself."
"But stabbing him in the neck?" Garette's voice trembled with anger and disbelief. "That's not self-defence. That's murder."
"I had to," Dyanne's voice became sharp and defensive. "If I hadn't acted quickly, I would have been the one who ended up dead. Do you understand that?"
