Chapter 9 - 9. The Fiery Justice

When Axel reached the barn door, he noticed that it was locked from the inside. A strange smell was emanating from within. He attempted to open the door, but it wouldn't budge as it was locked from the inside. Axel pondered why a barn door would be locked but couldn't come up with a plausible explanation.

He circled around the back of the barn but couldn't find any entry point. Axel knew he had to break in somehow, but doing so would make too much noise.

Then, an idea struck Axel, and he returned to the barn door. Raising his hand, Axel lightly knocked on the barn door. After a few seconds, he heard noises from inside. Someone approached the barn door and unlocked it.

As the door began to open, the person inside realized that something was amiss upon seeing Axel. Just as he was about to scream, Axel acted swiftly, grabbing the man by the neck and choking him unconscious. After rendering the man unconscious, Axel released his grip and carried him inside. Once inside, Axel laid the man on the ground and tied him up.

There was no one else inside the barn. Axel was shocked by what he saw. There was human skin on the table.

Appalled by the atrocity, Axel reached for his trusty axe. He struggled to control himself. Among the missing individuals was a little girl. How could anyone harm a young girl?

Axel's family had been killed by vampires. He hunted vampires who resembled those who had killed his family. This brought him some semblance of peace. Axel knew he had psychological issues. Would he hunt vampires if he hadn't been traumatized? Or would he be dealing with the Wendigo?

Axel disliked dwelling on such matters as they left him feeling conflicted. He had grown accustomed to not questioning life. Sometimes he wished he could be ignorant, as ignorance was bliss.

Ultimately, Axel chose not to be rational but to do as he pleased. He wouldn't involve his valued friends in this. Vampires preyed on humans for sustenance. The Wendigo sought to feed. But these humans weren't driven by hunger.

Axel wouldn't soil his axe on them. Instead, he would grant them a different kind of death. After returning from the barn, Axel approached the house. With a kick, he shattered the door, sending it flying into the interior. The door collided with the wall, creating a large dent.

Axel was no longer in control. He entered the house and encountered four individuals heading toward the noise. One of them brandished a knife. It was evident from the smell that they were having a meal.

"Why did you kill those people?" Axel looked so menacing that the individuals were too terrified to respond. Axel's patience was wearing thin.

In that moment, Axel noticed that some of the furniture inside the house was made of human skin. Axel's blood ran cold. He grabbed a piece of the broken door and swiftly struck the leg of the person holding the gun. Axel's blow was so forceful that the man's leg was shattered, leaving him writhing in pain on the ground. Axel struck the others as well. The woman began to plead.

"Please, I'm innocent, let me go." The woman attempted to evoke sympathy through tears, but what she didn't know was that Axel had received psychological training. Axel could easily discern when someone was lying. Many of the vampires he had killed had lied to him before.

Without responding to the woman, Axel grabbed her by the hair and led her to the barn. He tied her up alongside the other three individuals. Once he was sure that there was no one left in the house, Axel returned to the barn.

Inside, everyone was gasping for air. Axel had delivered a solid blow to each one of them. It was such a powerful strike that not even a vampire could escape without injury. Axel picked up a can of gasoline from the barn and began pouring it. Despite the pleas of the killers, Axel continued to pour.

When the gasoline ran out, Axel walked to the barn door, picked up a match he found inside, and struck it. He glanced at the barn one last time before lighting the match. The gasoline ignited in an instant, and flames rapidly engulfed the barn.

Axel took one final look at the barn before heading back into the house. He searched the rooms and eventually found the hidden room where the killings took place. After confirming that there was no one alive, he called 911 from the house phone. He didn't say anything to the operator. They would likely send the police. Axel glanced at the burning barn one last time. The screams from inside had ceased. No one's heart was beating. They had all perished in the flames.

As Axel made his way back to where the caravan would be, he found Felix sitting outside, gazing at the sky. Felix noticed Axel's arrival and studied him. He sensed that something was wrong but decided to remain silent upon seeing Axel's somber expression.

When Axel recounted what he had witnessed to them, Felix and Maxwell chose to remain silent as well. Vampires killed human for eat, but what Axel witnessed today was different.
