Chapter 38. Little girlfriend
"Sorry about the whole shit Ava" Alex apologized. He felt bad for Ava. She was a good person and deserved to be treated as one. She shouldn't be going through all of this.
Ava sipped from her iced Americano drink while heaving a deep sigh. "It's not your fault Alex. It's no one's fault either. Life can never go smoothly for anyone" she said and sipped from her drink again. "It never does".
Alex reached for her back and gave her a gentle pat, reassuring her with a smile.
Ava smiled back and took a mouthful of the coffee into her mouth. The iciness made her teeth shiver and she swallowed it immediately.
"I won't go after him anymore" she said after a while.
Alex looked at her. He furrowed his brows at what he felt when she said that. He should be happy that there was finally an opportunity for him but his feelings were quite the opposite.
"Why would you do that? He's your best friend" Alex said.
"I know. But he's no longer the Kyle that I used to know" Ava said. "Kyle would never hurt me. He'd never say hurtful things to me".
"Like you said, this is a rough time for you. You can't give up on him" Alex said.
"I'm not giving up on Kyle. But that doesn't mean I will pursue him again" she sniffed after she had said this line. "Kyle Compton is my best friend and I pray he remembers me soon".
"Maybe we should do things that would trigger his mind" Alex opined.
"He's not even going to look at me. He doesn't even want to. And that Kaitlyn by his side, isn't helping matters at all".
"Fuck Kaitlyn. She's a disaster" Alex cursed.
Ava chuckled at his outburst which looked kind of cute. Alex saw this and smiled. 'Finally, she smiled' he said to himself.
"Don't worry Ava. Daisy and I are here for you. We're on your side, all the way".
"Thanks so much Alex".
Dusk was already making its way to the sky when the duo set off to get their things from school. Ava was still on her games wear so she went over to get changed. When she was done, she came out to wait for Alex only to meet Kyle at the entrance of the changing room. He stood with his hands in his pocket. His eyes were shooting lasers at her. Ava halted in her steps when she saw him.
"You" she said, "this is the female's dressing room. What are you doing here? And besides, you're obstructing the way" Ava pointed out. Her heart palpitations were so loud that she could hear them and was nervous about him hearing it too. But they weren't standing too close. Still, Ava was shaking secretly. She had to clench her fists in order to calm herself down.
"It's not like I care where this place is. And, I thought you wouldn't come back" Kyle said. He didn't know what he was doing here and couldn't give any reason.
"I don't know why that is something you should concern yourself with" Ava said making Kyle mum for the moment. She tried to walk past him but he grabbed her arm.
"Hey, are you that hungry for attention? I didn't give you face and then you decided to start going around with that friend of yours?"
Ava was about to retort when Alex intervened. He pried Ava's arm from Kyle's hand and immediately shielded her from him. "What do you think you're doing? Stop disturbing Ava. She's tired and wants to go home".
Kyle's anger was fueled. He sent Alex a fiery glare. "Who are you? How dare you talk to me? I was the one talking to her!" Kyle fired. Ava was a little shocked at Kyle's outburst towards Alex. Through their years of friendship, she had never seen Kyle lose his temper. This was a first for her and she wasn't lying to herself when she said that she was kinda flustered. Weirdly, it excited her. At this moment, Kaitlyn walked in.
"Oh, you were here. I was looking all over for you" she said, her voice filled with concern.
"As always, your little girlfriend is always with you" Ava spat out. She needed to leave. Kaitlyn's appearance always ruins the show.
Kaitlyn paused and looked at Ava. "Really Ava? You think so too?" Kaitlyn asked with a smile that Ava found annoying. Ava wanted nothing than to rip that smile off of her face.
Ava didn't say anything to her and just looked away. Kaitlyn didn't mind her coldness. She smiled at her and turned to Kyle. "Hey let's go home" she said to him.
Kyle sent her a cold glare, his gaze turning back to Ava. "Why would you think she's my girlfriend? I never said that" Kyle said.
Kaitlyn paled visibly, however, she didn't say anything.
"Kyle, I need you to mind your own business and I will mind mine. Let's go home Alex" she said and began walking off.
Alex and Ava left, leaving the other duo to their business. The silence between them was so deafening that Kaitlyn wanted to hide somewhere. She had only acted like that to save face. And besides, she loved Kyle.
"Why did you come here? I told you to wait in the car", Kyle lashed out.
"I'm sorry Kyle. It's just...I was worried that something might have happened to you" she claimed.
"And who are you to worry? You're not my mother nor are you my girlfriend. Why not behave yourself?" Kyle berated.
Kaitlyn stood petrified. 'What was going on?' she asked herself. 'Are his memories returning? Is that why he's yelling at me?'
"Kyle's I'm not your girlfriend neither am I your mother, but, I'm your friend. Shouldn't that be a certificate for me to worry?" she asked in a gentle tone, as though trying to soothe him.
"Whatever" Kyle said and began walking off. He didn't bother with her due to the fact that he already had something messing with his mind. The girl who claims to be his best friend.
